Long established pub on the Hogs Back that was taken over by Fullers a few years ago. Has also been refurbished in that time making it more open plan with a restaurant created converted from a function room. The toilets are some of the best pub loos I've ever seen! Usual Fullers beers on offer to which I opted for the Seafarers which was nicely kept. The food (steak & ale pie) was also tasty and the service was excellent.

Some purists may look upon this as more of restaurant that just so happens to have a bar rather than the other way round but I guess it's now a reality of todays pub trade that they have to be like this in order to survive. It's a nice atmosphere here and somewhere the whole family would like.

9/10.

Nice enough road house. Beer was very good. It's no more expensive than anywhere else round here and at least it's very well kept! Well worth a visit.

This place has improved vastly - the beer was excellent (Jack Frost particularly good), reasonably priced menu and friendly staff. Liked the little alcoves and comfy sofas too. I would agree that drink prices are on the steep side but no more so than the nearby Shepherd & Flock.

The reburbishment last September has been great. Not only are the staff very friendly and efficient but the food is fantastic. The Open Burger has to be my favourite. Not only does it have a more formal dining area of the restaurant but you can relax on the sofas and tables in the bar area. The additional seating in the front makes it the perfect place to relax with a drink or two when the sun shines!

Recently refurbished, done a good job. Agree with odd outside tabling directly infront of pub where you used to park up a few years ago. Really does feel you are sitting in the car park!

However, if you are coming for the beer, then fret not, typical excellent Fullers range and quality on offer (have never tried the food, next time...)

Further to last the staff are actually very nice and very efficient now we have got to know them.
The beer is very well kept (HSB particularly) but as usual for a Fullers pub overpriced. Food is typical pub grub but a reasonably varied menu and perfectly acceptable. Again, the staff are efficient and friendly. Shame they dont do a smaller meal menu as they used to for those who dont want a large meal.
Fullers have slightly 'cocked up' the outside seating area recently by filling the front car park with ghastly metal tables and benches... WITHOUT any sunshades at all to protect the shiny heads of us old geezers.

Just visited tonight and have to say overall very disappointing. HSB was well looked after and my girlfriends red wine was good, however we ordered food and the Satay starter was the pre-formed skewers of reclaimed Chicken one can buy from Sainsburys for 35 pence each, served with a dip that may have been served by someone paid peanuts, but had little else in common with the ingredient. Whilst my Duck dish was tasty and relatively cheap at 9.50, my partners Lemon & Black Pepper Chicken tasted of just grilled chicken. The greatest shock however was the bill - 6.10 for a large glass of wine and 3.10 for my pint. We're not talking about a fancy restaurant here, it's just a pub and one with an odd feel at that!! Wouldn't go back on principle. Plenty of decent pubs in the area to choose from.

Visited this pub at lunchtime and had a lovely lunch along with 3 girlfriends. Very pleasant atmosphere and staff were friendly and attentive. Very clean and toilets were fresh. We thought the atmosphere was lovely and had a laugh with the staff who told us about the Tuesday night quiz. We will probably go to the quiz as it seems they are really trying to bring some atmosphere and life to what has always been a bit of a dull place that you would take your Granny for lunch!! Go Princess Royal

Seems to be going downhill fast....maybe its the 'recession' biting.... but rarely many customers.
Beer still kept well and food reasonably OK. Bar staff polite and efficient but the two 'bar managers' come across as quite surly. Will still keep using the pub because the beer is good and its close to home but its atmosphere has changed for the worse.

When we visited The Princess Royal for lunch recently we were surprised to see how quiet it was on a Friday lunch time.

Only two other tables were occupied in the restaurant, and as they were already eating I remember thinking that our meals would not be very long.

Unfortunately it took almost an hour for our four main courses to be served - which I suppose is why the pub was so empty. You couldnt risk coming here on your lunch hour.

No member of staff came anywhere near us during this long wait, and then the meals arrived in drips and drabs.

So was this type of wait the norm, or didnt they notice / care?

I dont particularly enjoy the dcor, but if the food had been good and the service decent we would have gone back.

As it was we felt abandoned, and I cant imagine well be going again.

Love coming here midweek for drinks with pals, nice quiet atmosphere with music playing in the background. Good wine at a reasonable price and also do a lovely lunch menu during the week! Have also heard good reports on the hotel

The beer's ok and the food is quite good - it should be bearing in mind how long it apparently takes to cook! Disinterested staff took forever to take our order and then had to wait 40 minutes for it to arrive. The order was incorrect but decided not to complain too much as didn't have time to wait another 40 minutes. Check the bill too, couple of items mysteriously appeared on mine that hadn't been ordered, couldn't help but notice a lack of any argument (or apology) upon my refusing to pay for them either. A tip - might not be a good idea to express any derogatory views relating to members of the "travelling Community" - they seem to hold court to the right on entering.

Since it was done up it looks a bit like a hotel function room but they keep the beer like they know what they're doing and the food is good proper food and not mucked about. Decent portions as well. It's never too busy either which is nice because I bleeding hate drumming my fingers waiting waiting all the time when I've come out with the missus to spend my money.

This is quite an old 1920's or 30's pub which has been renovated inside to a more modern standard. Some may not like this but it is very comfortable and relaxing. The young staff are all very pleasant, very efficient and very welcoming. The food is perfectly acceptable and caters for both 'bar meals' and offers excellent restaurant facilities. This was a Gales establishment now owned by Fullers but you can still get a couple of the Gales ales....whether you choose the Gales or the Fullers beers they are all very well kept and presented....the HSB is excellent as is the London Pride.
I knew this place when it was an old fashioned local pub/restaurant but despite the 'corporate' changes it has retained a very comfortable and relaxing atmosphere which is complimented by the pleasant, efficient and attentive staff.
