please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Popped in on a Friday evening with 3 work colleagues for a few beers and were immediately perturbed to see there was no ale on tap with all of 3 pump clips turned round. The chap behind the bar offered us bottles of Spitfire or Doombar, we took the Spitfire but it was straight from the cellar and was far too cold.

This is my 3rd or 4th visit (I’ve lost count) in the last couple of years and every other time I come here it’s alright, on this occasion it wasn’t.

The karaoke was far too loud, the beer too cold, the lights on full pelt making the pub look like it was in daylight and there was a baby being changed on one of the tables…..hopefully when I visit again it will be better.

Recently under new management and the family have done a fine job indeed. A wide selection of snacks and draught beer (Doom Bar was the best when I visited). Also they had a shellfish kiosk served out of a side window making the establishment genuinely Cockney indeed! Mixed and friendly crowd. Music selection was enjoyable enough (Cool for Cats by Squeeze, Madness, other pub favourites). I shall return soon for sure!

2nd visit to the Nelson on Friday night.

It's been over 7 months since my last visit and the pub has had a mini face lift and has smartened itself up.

Food was being eaten on my arrival, it looked okay.

3 ales on the pumps now, my 2 pints of Doombar were very good.

Still plenty of locals in the pub but they are fine and in no way spoil a visit to this pub.

The area is rough around the edges but the people are honest and fair.

Get off the DLR at Island Gardens and experience it for yourself.

My first ever visit to the Lord Nelson last Friday night.

After several beers in The George, myself and 2 work colleagues moved on the Nelson not knowing what to expect.

The pub is large with the bar to your right as you enter. A Ska dj was on “OLAS BOSS” so the pub was pretty full, most seemed local & to know each other.

No real ale on hand pull, the only hand pull they had was turned round. My pint of Smooth was fine and the barman was a very pleasant chap.

Garden / Smoking area out the back, fairly non-descript décor but a pleasant enough pub.

It’s close to work so I may return

The Pub had the outside redecorated October 2009. There are now 3 Real Ales available as well as a good selection of beers, wines & spirits. There are some great seasonal specials on at the moments, and the fortnightly Quiz is ever popular. A pool competition is being started on Sunday nights. The lighting has also been changed.

Didn't like this place at all. Beer was vinegary and served by a surly barman.

I agree with Rex, nice place on the inside has got a pool table which is well positioned so you're not knocking into people all the time. Drink selection was ok. All in all a good pub.

Youngs Bitter and Bombardier were the only real ales on. The Youngs Bitter (at 2.70 a pint) was just about OK.This pub looks very unprepossessing from the outside, but is better when you step inside. The emphasis seems to be on food, but theres no problem if you just want to have a drink. I didnt eat there, but the food being devoured by other punters looked to be very good. There is a pool table at the back; a few sofas, but the majority of the seating consists of normal tables and chairs. Its a largish corner site pub, that unfortunately has not apparently retained any evidence of its mid-Victorian heritage. But its a reasonably good pub not worth going out of your way to find, though OK if youre in the area and fancy a pint. I would sum it up as being clean and functional, and quite welcoming.

Potentially this could be my local, so went in to check it out. Reasonably crowd in for a Thursday night. Quiet atmosphere, missed the Bombadier when I ordered, so had a couple of pints of Guinness. Fair pint. Ate there as well. Menu pretty good and not too expensive. Had the cottage pie and then Apple Pie and custard. Apple Pie excellent. Barman very friendly and there's free wireless internet if you want to bring your laptop. Nice pub, I'll go back.
