please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Went there as there was at wedding reception on the grounds. Lovely setting with the church right opposite. Quite a posh place. 3-4 different ales on pull. Nice staff

Seems that things have changed at the Bells since the last reviews were written. Although we didn't eat, we popped in for a drink after a walk yesterday and anything less like a "chain pub" would be hard to find. It now has an upmarket gastropub feel and the food looked extremely good, a little fussy even, and with prices to match. Slightly brisk and impersonal service at the bar, but I suspect they were busy: my partner had a (very good) cappuccino and I had a reasonable pint of Robinson's XB. Lovely location.

This is a very nice pub in the Cheshire countryside. There's an American flag flying outside probably in recognition that General Patton and other US top brass frequented here when they were stationed nearby. Certainly, there's a lot of WWII memorabelia that I'll take a closer look at whenever I'm in there next.

The pub itself is very nicely decorated and does have a cosy, traditional feel to it. There's a good selection of Robinson Brewery ales on tap and although I didn't have any food it did look nice and fairly reasonably priced. The staff were friendly and most ales were about 2.60 a pint.

Overall, this pub experience was a positve one and I would recommend a visit to all those who like their rural pubs and WWII history.

8/10.

Don't bother with this beautiful old important building in a historic area. All the locals will not eat there as the food is terrible and standard of service rotten. Be prepared to wait a very long time to get served or for your food to arrive even if its not busy. Tables are always dirty with glasses and pots not removed for hours.

How can such a wonderful place as this be allowed to operate by such a poor business team. I am waiting for the day the pub is under new management!!

First class service by a very polite landlord and landlady. Lager was very drinkable and the whole surroundings are well worth a look in.
Couldn't comment on the food, but by the look of it the portions were more than adequate and well cooked.
Another pub to call in if only to see the interior. A very big difference from the usual run of the mill type.

I visited this pub a few times when I was working in Knutsford in 2006-7 and thought it was particularly good with options for diners, snackers and drinkers. Great situation, good food and good beer (I can't remember which now!) but I would definitely return. Can't comment on service today but was ok when I used it.

Sat outside beneath all the wisteria and ate on a lovely summer's evening. I don't understand all the bad reviews for this pub, OK so it may be part of a small chain, but the food is delicious- hardly microwaved Wetherspoons or Brewers Fayre tat. The setting is wonderful and the beer range, whilst not adventurous, was decent. Found the service to be fine as well. A wonderful place.

Nearly didnt go to The Bells because the reviews were bad but glad we did. Lovely setting, polite attentive staff and good food. The seating area for families with children was comfortable and the childrens food was good. We certainly didnt feel that the children were unwelcome, quite to the contrary. We had lamb and beef sunday roasts which were excellent. Our friend has food allergies and the restaurant was very accommodating in doing rice instead of potatoes and cooking food without sauces etc. The reviews I read were quite old and I presume the restaurant has improved as we certainly had no complaints and will be returning.

The Bells has a policy that states children are permited inside the raised dining area if this is full they clearly cannot accomodate . yes there are other areas but they are clearly not for children as they clearly dont want children everywhere .this is not rude or not child friendly its a rule of the house.
ITS CLEAR THIS PUB HAS RULES WHATS WRONG WITH THAT YOU HAVE RULES IN YOUR HOME

seems that yet again people use this site to show there ignorance and rude nature.
Have been going to the Bells for a number of years and have always found it a very high standard.
Visited 1st sep evening to sample there new menu
(FABULOUS LOCAL SINGER ON JUST LAID BACK NOT INTRUCIVE) all British Beef / British farm assured chicken & Sausage Free Range Eggs .
It is clear yes this is a chain pub but it is clear that they are making a fabulous contribution to british farmers .
we all say we care about british farmers but lets face it no one does anything about it and people really dont care if the meat comes from a heard of 2 headed cattle in China we all talk the talk but never walk the walk.
My congratulations to the Bells in taking the high ground way a head of anyone else and trying to bring British Meats to the for front of there menu.WALKING THE WALK.
EXCEPT THE LAMB THATS NEW ZEALAND.

KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK

A pub on a typical big company induced long downhill slide, dirty, cold and the most appalling bought in food.

Bells of Peover
having had many meals here i have always found the service , food and atmosphere very pleasant .
this lovely pub is a unique having read the previous comments with interest i found it my duty to put my penny in as it seems that some people use this site for there own ignorance and self pity .
i have grown up children and i would never allow them any where near a pub to me this shows the complete lack of imagination of some parents on how to entertain there children . i have been in the bells and yes it is clear that they have systems inplace where children are welcome in certain areas , what is wrong with that this is not a CHARLIE CHALKS / WHACKY WAREHOUSE / BURGER KING this is THE BELLS OF PEOVER
I must also add that when childern are inside they seem on the whole very well behaved and are clearly on the whole good kids , how ever that is only because of the house rules.
this is a fantastic pub very well run although it is clear in this day & age that the staff have to be all things to all people all the time.
THIS IS CLEARLY IMPOSSIBLE BUT I AM SURE THEY DO THERE BEST

IF YOU HAVE KIDS WITH YOU - DO NOT GO HERE. FAMILY OF 5 WITH A WELL BEHAVED 1 YEAR OLD, ASKED TO SIT OUTSIDE AS ONLY TABLES INSIDE WERE IN A NON-CHILD AREA. SAT OUTSIDE AS REQUESTED, STARTED TO RAIN - LUCKILY THE UMBRELLA OVER OUR TABLE HELD OUT.

EVENTUALLY INVITED INTO PUB AFTER MENTIONING TO THE WAITRESS SEVERAL TIMES THAT THE FOOD SHE WAS BRINGING US WAS ARRIVING DAMP!!!

WALKED THROUGH THE RESTAURANT PAST AN ENTIRELY EMPTY AREA OF TABLES!!!

USE TO BE AN EXCELLENT PLACE TO GO WITH GREAT ATMOSPHERE AND STAFF.

SINCE BEEN ADVISED THAT THE PERSON SERVING US AND THE ONE WHO ASKED US NOT TO SIT INSIDE WAS THE MANAGER OF THIS ESTABLISHMENT.

AVOID. AVOID. AVOID. AVOID. AVOID. AVOID

A beautiful pub in a semi-hidden location, worth seeking out if you're in the area. Great for Surrey exiles like me if you're home sick..

From my perspective of not being local and not knowing the other Chef & Brewer pubs mentioned, I couldn't comment on the uniqueness of the menu. But the food I had was lovely even if it is available elsewhere.

And the well kept beer went down well - not an amazing range though. I had Bombardier and it was just right.

The only thing against this my pub in my book was the slightly dim bar staff who short changed me and then couldn't work out what the change should have been. The waiting staff were very pleasant and on the ball though.

Pub looks good, but the food is poor. Ok for a couple of pints but thats all.
ginomendozauk - 18 Feb 2006 13:35
APPALLING ! Chain pub at its worst, so sinful to allow this stunning pub to serve such dross, same menu as 3 other chef & brewer pubs in the area... avoid

nice pub, do not welcome children at all. Food is good, location is popular so if you like a bit of space forget it. Would recommend a visit if passing and not that hard to find if you can read sign posts

One of the best (and hardest to find) pubs in Cheshire. It's a 500 year old inn that has the dubious honour of being the location where Generals Eisenhower and Patton made plans for the D-Day invasion of Normandy over lunch. Set amidst beautiful rolling fields and woodlands, it nudges up against the equally picturesque graveyard of Lower Peover church. You may have to duck below the ancient wysteria trunk that grows up to cover the entire side of the pub, and once inside you'll find excellent food and real ales amongst oak beams and leaded windows.
It has a fairly large carpark, but can get very busy in summer.
