Celebrated my birthday here at the April. Was given a free bottle of prosecco to celebrate. just had to register online. They had a DJ which was awesome. Had an awesome time. only thing was happy hour should be longer and be on all cocktails.

Also COUSINHUB, in your contribution yesterday you refer to 'my girlfriend' whereas back on October 21st your 'review' includes a mention for 'my husband'.
Is there anything you need to tell us ?
Mines_a_large_one - 6 Dec 2011 12:58
cousinhub: today you claim to have been coming to HJB "on and off for over 4 years ", and yet on August 2nd you stated it was your first ever visit ... this glaring contradiction might make some question the impartiality of your reviews

I've been coming to Henry J beans on and off for over 4 years due to working in the area. I have to admit the last time I went there I said I'd never go back. Alot of the bad reviews on here summed it up but I went in again recently with my girlfriend(she loves the food) and I can't believe how much better is it. First of all the staff were very friendly, chatty and smiling. One of the managers served me and I got talking to her. I mentioned how bad it was the last time I was in and she apologized and told me it's come under new management and that their trying to get their good reputation back. We ordered food which was served quickly and tasted great (get the sharing board its huge). The atmosphere was nice and the music was perfect (not too loud and a mix of everything) on the whole I have to say I had a great evening when I wasn't expecting to.

I LOVE THIS PLACE.

This is that place you search for that feels like your at cheers. everyone is friendly and happy, if they've seen you before they're quick to ask about you and have a quick chat, but most of all the atmosphere is fantastic when its busy. the beer garden is astonishing for London.

I recommend the food also. they are great portions and always consistent with quality. TRY THE HOT WINGS!!

Great place, great service, great team.

I only come here in the afternoon as that means I can get served as there ain't much people here. When its packed the staff have no idea on clocking who had been waiting there the longest. They only like serving people asking for cocktails as that is where they think the tips are. Many times I have had to ask for my pint to be topped up. The staff never seem to stay there as this could be the problem. I have had food a few times which can be hit or miss. In my opinion it is over priced even for Chelsea. It is also supposed to be an American pub but I can't recall them selling any American beers, what a joke that it. Plus points are Music is good.

We recently booked Apartment 195 for our wedding reception. Wow! What a fantastic night that was put on for us. We kicked off around 6pm to be greeted by name at the door by the doorman and manager on duty. After our champagne and canap reception we went on to do a really fun cocktail class where myself, my husband, and our guests each took turn in making 3 cocktails. We found the bartenders provided to be very knowledgeable and friendly throwing in some banter to keep the laughs up.
We then continued on to our 3 course meal which was very reasonable price wise. The food all came out in good time and was all of a very good quality. Again the staffs were great and got everything set up for after our meal whilst we were eating.
After we finished our meal the music came on and we kicked promptly into party mode. It was a good that we could plug our Ipod in to their sound system and run our own playlists all night.
All in all we had an amazing night and would definitely look first to booking Apartment 195 for any future functions. Thanks again to the staff and management for making our night so memorable.

Awful. Terrible beer (only a choice of Becks, Stella, Bud, Guinness) No ale. Bad beer, tried Becks and Bud, both tasted as if the pipes hadn't been cleaned. Rude bouncers who bark orders to leave the garden, no manners. Go to the Trafalgar instead, way better beer.

This was my first visit to Henry J Beans and it was pretty much as expected. Nothing fancy but good, solid fare and you're not going to walk away hungry, that's for sure. staffs are friendly and the beer garden is awsome
cousinhub56 - 2 Aug 2011 21:55
Terrible...

Was served the worst steak ever in my life and was followed by a dessert that was a good many days off...

Service slow... everything over priced.... VERY VERY POOR
SgtPepper - 4 Aug 2009 15:23
As everyone has said, a great beer garden, but the slowest service known to mankind. Oh, and the loos are hideous. Only go on a sunny day, bag a table and order more drinks well in advance!
hammjg - 9 Jul 2007 16:45
5* beer garden - among the top 3 in London. Quite surreal setting, smack bang in the middle of London.

Beers OK-ish (San Miguel isnt my favourite, but there isnt any better on offer really), food pretty good.

Rules for Henry J Beans:
Go on a gorgeous summers' day,
Get there early to grab a table in the garden,
Order some pitchers of frozen margaritas and that's you sorted.

No point in visiting if you can't get to the garden - it is truly one of the best in London. Boozer itself is nothing to write home about.
Sweeps - 9 Feb 2007 14:03
The beer garden out the back is the best bit about this place and really is a great spot to enjoy lunch and some afternoon drinks on a sunny day. The food is fine, burgers were good and I agree with 'lupus', not too pricey - not only is this London, it's Chelsea; it's never going to be budget!
PennyS - 31 Aug 2006 17:12
Went here today for lunch (Thursday) despite reading the reviews below. Well I can't say anything bad about the place, but please take into account it wasn't busy at the time.

Walked in, one of the staff came up to us at the bar and asked if we where eating today, said yes and was shown to a table. Round of drinks ordered, burgers ordered. Everything was handled with a smile. Burgers where super and not *that* expensive for london. Will definitely go back and see what it's like when it's busy.

Huge and impressive beer garden, but you do need to get there by 1pm on a sunny day to get a table.

Food is ok, if overpriced, same goes for the beer.
The Service is truly shocking though; I agree with the comment below about the bar staff not knowing or caring who should be served next.

The inside is all faux American diner rubbish so this pub should only really be visited for the beer garden in our ridiculously short English Summer.

TheClaw - 27 Jul 2005 12:44
If it was not for the gorgeous beer garden out the back then this pub would suffer as the bar staff are rude and as previously stated do tend to forget who has been waiting a while and serve the next nearest person. I have complained about this and have on occasion walked out because of it. Food is of a decent quality if you like burgers with frills.
juliogeordio - 29 Apr 2005 11:18
Not bad for a quick and reasonably cheap pint and burger at lunchtime, but wouldn't spend too much time here. It is terribly noisy and certainly not a place to linger and enjoy a quiet pint - beer pretty ordinary. The very loud TV / music is horrid.Staff fairly unimpressive

I don't ask much of bar staff these days. I've given up expecting anyone to do sums in their heads, doubling the time it takes to get served as they shuttle between the till and the customer. I suppose they have to learn cocktail recipes somehow, even if it is while serving the person ahead of me while I wait for a simple pint and chips. But one thing I still expect is something so simple a 5 year old could do it. But the bar staff here hadn't worked it out on the night I was there (not by choice, by the way): Keep an eye on what order your customers arrive at the bar. Standing with a menu in one hand and a wad of cash in the other, making eye contact with everyone behind the bar for FIFTEEN minutes while they serve people who just rock up is simply out of order, and I finally had to get a bit shirty. As it goes, it took less time for the food to come, and the kithen staff were a friendly pair of lads, so two points for them. But I would not recommend this pathetic excuse for a boozer.
fat_freddys_cat - 4 Apr 2005 13:10
Bloody Awful. Crap Food, Poor Drinks service, and a bunch of wannabe Sloane Rangers treating the place like their 6th form common room. I notice most of us locals avoid the place - you should too.
anonymous - 31 Mar 2005 16:56
A pikey from Acton??! That did make me laugh!

The other extreme of the Chav scale methinks - And just as bad..

It's still a horrible chain pub - There are plenty of better places nearby..
TheGP - 5 Nov 2004 13:42
well, lets put it this way -if youre a sloane its all normal, and if youre a pikey from acton-you will find everyone irritating-that pretty much sums it up.

food and drink excellent-barstaff change quite fast here, so depends on the day and even the hour-the fat hog has gone-hurrah!
andrew rees-windham - 31 Aug 2004 12:36
Whoever said this was a smart and classy venue is clearly blind, stupid or the owner.

A horrid expensive joint, filled with irritating people
TheGP - 23 Aug 2004 11:00
Huge garden which stretches as far back as Wandsworth; service is generally poor as the barstaff (liek most places in London these days) dont speak English; food good and quick turnaround but dont expect to eat what you ordered; great eye candy too but all very aloof; and a nice inoperative fountain to sit around when all the seats are taken.
Overflow bar out the back is a good idea, and sells bottles only. A local institution.
Lawrence - 21 Aug 2004 00:53
Strange one - terrible tourist bar 3 a pint of FOSTERS! BUT EXCELLENT beer garden.
Paul - 16 Aug 2004 12:55
This is quite possibly the worst pub of its type in London. The place wasn't clean and the toilets were particulary dirty and unattended. The staff (while polite) were too few andly cleary stretched. The crowd and music policy was confused. Worst of all the garden, the only possible attraction of the place, closed early forcing customers into the already overcrowded indoors. This place has brought out-of-town crassness to Chelsea and I would never go there again.
tdk - 5 Jun 2004 16:35
Ive been going to this place for a few years, and put it this way if youre going to kings road, its as essential a place to visit as they come-the beer garden is excellent, tthe food is very good-one minor flaw, last time i was here took 20 min to get served, and it was not what i asked for-and the well done rib eye steak, was mostly gristle, and was little more than rare!
the fat barman who works behind the bar, is clearly for the sack, as he cant cope with an order comprising of more than 2 drinks-very dim individual-but dont be put off, he'll be gone soon! Agree about the sloane ranger clientele. Though not all the people going there are local-some wannabe chelsea types from fulham too! Interesting how the wannabes are louder than the more refined and laid back locals!
Lord Suffer fools not so gladly - 25 May 2004 16:25
This is a very smart and classy venue. It gets very busy at weekends and is absolutely full of long legged sloane girls. Its an american grill bar with probably Londons best and biggest beer garden, george best drinks here at times.
