After reading the more positive reviews posted below I reluctantly returned to the Bedford after vowing never to set foot inside the place again. My word am I pleased I did! The pub was buzzing with wonderful clientele (no dodgy druggies in sight) and the bar staff were incredibly friendly not to mention funny. Gone is the high volume hip-hop music to be replaced with music of yesteryear (thrilled to hear Doris Day) I enjoyed a superb roast lunch, the best I have had in ages and at only 7.50 it was certainly well priced. 3 real ales, including a very well kept Doombar (unusual for Brighton) and equally well kept Harvey and OS Hen. The pub is now exactly what you would expect from a traditional pub actually its looking better than ever. I am thrilled to see the Bedford back on form, best of luck to all concerned - I will be back!

Hugely improved thanks to the new management, who are both very friendly and making an extraordinary effort to get the pub back to something like its heyday. The decor has been restored to give it a cosy, traditional feel, and the clientele have improved to match.

The regular beers are Harvey's Sussex Bitter and Old Speckled Hen, both decently kept. They've also just started doing food on Sundays, with a good vegetarian choice alongside traditional roasts.

Came over to Brighton from Dublin for NYE and went to the Tavern with friends and family. What a great evening and such a lovely pub. Went back on NY Day as well, when the pub was still busy. Adam and his team have really made a difference since they took it over in December. Definitely worth a visit.

I too heard it was under new management after avoiding the place because of the hideous people who'd run what was formerly a lovely pub into the ground. A friendly welcome, warmly painted and with comfy armchairs (not too convinced about the mock-baronial armour though!). Three hand pumps on the bar but only Harvey's on; Summer Lightning had run out, but the landlord assured me they'd be getting more ales on when business picks up.

A good alternative to the Lilo when it gets too busy. A lovely local and a good return to form.

This pub used to be fantastic and then slowly went down hill as the reviews
below all point out. However, after my recent visit it would appear things have dramatically improvedfor the better!
Under new management, with a sympathetic makeover, this pub looks set to return to the glory days of The Bedford. This old tavern has been lovingly restored to a cosy local boozer and a warm welcome was offered to all who walked through the door. I cant wait to see how quickly this place takes off and urge all fans of the old Bedford Tavern to give this place a try once again I will certainly be a regular once more.

Since The Bedford Tavern in Western Street, Brighton, re-opened in March 2009, under 'New Management', all the regular local customers have been driven away and the surrounding pubs and bars nearby, are experiencing a substantial increase in their trade. The very sad thing is that The Bedford is now run like a sink-estate pub with seedy, aggressive looking customers, and not a local boozer. The pub interior looks like a badly decorated cheap, and chintzy 1985 high-rise council flat, which is very off-putting. I would avoid this pub at all costs, unless you are into that sort of rough, seedy dive-bar and want a pint and a fight - I would NOT call that a great Brighton night. I have rated zero points for this pub, because that's all it really deserves.

Good points:- Close to the seafront, and a lovelly old building with leaded windows.

Bad points:- It has recently been taken over , and the new staff are absolutely terrible. They are arrogant and do not care if they insult any customers.
I will not be going back to this pub whilst it is in charge of the current landlady.

This has gone from a very nice pub to a soulless bar (apparently after several changes in management in just a few years): the traditional decor has been painted over (badly), the modern furniture looks out of place and the lighting is harsh and unpleasant. On our visit, the bar staff, though willing, got our order wrong twice; and we were among only half a dozen customers. We left after one round.

Unfortunantly has now been turned into a bar, decor now bland and old wooden chairs now faux leather tub chairs. Juke box just plays gay club anthems on a loop.

I like this pub a lot...one of the few pubs around that hasn't been turned into a bar. Very friendly, good food, great staff and they let you take your dog in. What more do you need?
