Still a really pleasant free house on the edge of Aughton. Surrounded by fields, it's a true country pub. The real ale is good and apparently so is the food. Well worth a visit but beware screaming kids as it's family friendly.

This was the second pub in the Aughton area I visited after the Stanley Arms (not listed on here). But the Derby Arms was my favourite pub of 12 I tried in Lancashire either side of the football on Sunday. It's only a small place. But there are a few intimate corners. Ale drinkers are well served by a small but varied selection - Rat Hai Karate & Pet Rat, Rudgate Ruby Mild, Tetleys Cask & Salopian Oracle. Diners also seem well catered for, with the pub doing a roaring trade for food. There is a children's play area in the garden to keep the little ones occupied and to top it all, both staff and customers are friendly. Probably an 8/10, which is an unusual score for me for a pub without a real cider.

This is an archetypal English pub which has largely been untouched by time. Easy to find as its on the main road between Ormskirk & Melling & stands alone in the countryside. Traditional dark wood paneling, Victorian artifacts, old beer bottles displayed on the high shelves & pump clips attached to the ceiling above the bar. Very cosy feeling. Arran Ale unbelievable value at 1.50 a pint (seemingly also untouched by time). More handpumps available too but the Arran was in excellent form so I didn't take much notice of the other choices. Well worth a visit.

Excellent all round

Great pub with a cosy feel with two coal fires to keep you warm during the colder weather. Real ales available including Arran Ale which at 1.50 a pint is excellent value. Food is very good too with big portions and it's worth having the all day breakfast.

I gather this pub has won a number of awards and from what I saw well deserved. Cheap ale, good service and nice food is a winning combination and is a blueprint for any successful pub.

9/10.

This Pub is getting better and better. Still inexpensive beer from 1.50 a pint for cask and keg. Food is on the up quality wise from good to very very good. They deserve to succeed, if you havent tried it for a while try it now you will be pleasantly suprised. As for me I won't go anywhere else.

Excellent selection of cask ales that change as fast as they are drank. Just when you thought youve missed a real good beer, then another one comes to replace it. Five choices on the last visit.

This is an absolutely fantastic pub. A great range of beers with there always being three quality guest ales on, friendly staff and a great atmosphere. I find the drinks to be good value. Whenever I've eaten here, I've always been very impressed with the standard of food, value and service. I cannot recommend this pub more highly. A first class pub!

Visited the Derby Arms again yesterday, new chef there who is apparently michelin star trained & it was very apparent the food was to die for, i asked for a variation of what was on the menu and wasnt disspointed!!! still very cheap less than 40 for a family of four including melt in your mouth steak and gorgeous deserts (try the snickers gateaux if they still have any left). My other half tried all the guest ales one at 1.50 per pint unbelievable. lovely freindly atmosphere. we are going to the quiz night on tuesday which is either done by the owner Mike or one of the barmaids Jody and is good fun with a 500 jackpot to win and free sandwiches. cant wait

KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK....

My wife and I called at the Derby Arms yesterday early evening thinking we would have tea before going to the cinema. On the specials board it said Vegetarian Selection, so my wife asked what these where, only to be told that all that was available was tomato soup! I ordered scampi and chips which was no more that a childs portion and not cheap either. The meal cost nearly 10 for 1 small meal, one bowl of soup and a bowl of chips. What a ripoff! It's the worst meal I have ever had and we certainly won't go back or recommend it to anyone else.

This is a lovely traditional country pub, i cannot beleive the comments of Mr Smyth 18 jan 2008, we have been visiting the pub for quite some time now and are always made to feel extremely welcome and invoved in the discussions and banter of the regulars & staff. I have never had a bad meal yet & the new chef, a scotsman i beleive is second to none. The Derby Arms has won pub of the year again and is definitely the cheapest in the area. well worth a visit if you havent been before.

Couldnt believe my eyes at the comment about the food and atmosphere . OK they had a few problems with Chefs which pub doesnt, but you must try it again. Its just won Pub Of The Year 2008 for the third time in four years it also has a new Chef who's food is brill.I keep going back because against all odds they still keep prices low . I can't cook at home for what it costs me to eat here. I really do think they've got it right . The out side is all clean and shiny after the refurbishment. Hopefully the Landlady will have her usuall lovely hanging baskets up soon. If you've not been its definately worth a try.

Good ales, not good food, nice fires, middling atmosphere

This pub has just won pub of the year 2007 for West Lancs CAMERA and runner up for West Pennine area. It has the most amazing range of beers changing up to 12 times a week. Classical jazz and folk type music on the third monday of the month. Apparantly any one can play so i'm taking my triangle. The food is still good although prices have risen with the increase in gas and electricity.I also know that the pub is about to be refurbished outside so it will look pretty when we drive up. I would like to wish Mike and Jan every success they are doing a great job in difficult times
mikethehammer - 5 Dec 2007 10:59
A further recent visit found the beers still fantastic. two changed while we were there Choice of 7 in one evening and all top notch. Also found that the Chef had left and the cooking being done the Landlady and her partner and it was even better than on our previous visit. It is definately a pub to make regular visits to.

This pub has won lots of CAMRA awards. The real ale is amazing and there are usualy between 6 and 9 different ones every week.Mondays can be quiet but with no juke box or fruit machine its a beer junkies heaven. The food is pretty good and amazingly cheap, just isnt served late enough, so as not to upset the drinkers ,so i am told. All in all a great place for a relaxing night out.
mikethehammer - 16 Feb 2007 21:09
The Derby Arms Aughton is a lovely traditional pub with three guest ales which change frequently The Landlady will always try and get guests ales that customers suggest wherever possible. The pub has recently had a refurb but has kept all the well loved charecteristics. The food is homecooked and very reasonably priced as is the beer.
I have always found the bar staff to be friendly and welcoming & happy to do whatever the customers request wherever possible. The Quiz nights are really busy nights so some people obviously approve & i have had some great times there during the weekend !!!!!
daisyrub - 12 Feb 2007 12:56
Nice old fashioned pub. Great cheap and generally good meals . Beer well kept as a rule. Sadly quiz nights now on Thursdays and Tuesdays (Why?)

Bar staff look at you stupid when you ask them to put the beer in first in a pint of shandy but there you go!

No music (yes!) No machines (yes!)

Really nice place of a week day but not so good of a weekend. Great food and good beer.
