Disgusted by the attitude and disrespect shown by the doorstaff at spread eagle. Have been a regular at this pub, but was shocked by the seemingly displayed new policy shown by the doorstaff. We were refused entry to the spread eagle because apparently the pub was full. The pub was clearly not that busy. We witnessed women standing inline in freezing conditions whilst the doorman consequently let his friends in to the pub. After questioning why these people were allowed in and we were not, we were told that there was a one in one out policy, yet nobody had left the pub. The doorman then procedded to make threatening gestures. This used to be a friendly and welcoming pub, really dissapointed. This is not the kind of attitude you would expect in Rayleigh.

Used to be a great little boozer, now ruined by horrendous 'makeover'. Sad to see.

Great Old looking Pub from the outside, but await the ripped out 'sports' interior, heart stopping, looks half finished, perhaps better unstarted, Directors barely palatable. Only other option GK IPA untried enough said..........

New guy took this pub over a couple of months back, alas the guy's a complete knob. Needs to spend less time thinking he's Tommy Toughnuts, a 'doorman wannabe', getting his bumchums from the Paul Pry to throw easy targets out and accusing them of dealing drugs and concentrate on the half dozen regulars that do drugs, everyday, right under his nose !
The plans are to make this another 'Marco's or Lords', thats the audience he's aiming for. Club Eagle, do me a favour ! Oh and someone really ought to tell him that Goatee beards are a really bad idea, especially ginger ones.

Not a bad pub in general, there seems to be an improvement in staffing. Get rid of some of the old regs and this will be an even better pub. I miss the days when it was a smaller pub and it was seperated into 2 bars.

In here on Saturday only two real ales GK IPA and SN Spitfire. Tried a pint of the Spitfire was a bit bland

Unfortunately the pub should be renamed 'The slightly limping eagle', with all credit; the hearts there with the management of Bernadette and Andy (A Top barman) Still the same usual crowd of Loons. Great DJ friday live bands Saturday and roast tatties on the bar sunday!! what more could you ask|!!

Well what can i say ,yes thing have changed at spread and things had gone down hill ,but it was young Ally who came in November and stayed for 6 weeks who start to sort things out ,and while he was there the place was painted and things started to get better and the lines started getting cleaned every week ! .
And i would just like to say it was not down to Frank and his son .
And would also like to wish the new lady good !

So its happened again guys. Ive havent been paid for the second week running and das not been paid. Although the customers make the pub the running of it from above is awful so all in all this is what we ha to deal with

No Dishwasher
No Hot water
No Heating
No Dishwaser in kitchen
No Cooker
No Heaters outside
No lights outside
An Ice machine with a mind of its own

Tell me how you can run a decent pub like that. Ah wel best of luck to all the loyal suctomers that made our time there enjoyable.

Best wishes

Frank and Darren..

Well seems like we are back to square one beer is crap again due to the fact that the glasses are being washed in a builders bucket if the dish washer stops working just use a builders bucket why didnt I think of that.
Darren and frank was the right people to run this pub but the almighty Jan didnt have the foresight or interest to see how good they were,
asking the customers would have been a good start but I guess we are just a pound note to her well I wont be drinking in the for some time and will do everything I can to keep my mates out a kind of protest my local yes my kind off landlord no way

Hey guys, Darren here thankyou very much for taking dad and I in. You made our stay there all the more enjoyable. I hope for your sake it doesnt start to go downhill once more. I hope you will keep in contact and see us again soon. Once again many thanks..

Oh dear, just as things were getting better, wham !
Alas the Managers, having started to turn the pub around, were left with no option to leave.

The owners of this establishment expect their managers to live in the upstairs apartment with no central Heating. The dishwasher in the pub broke, it's not been replaced, staff have to wash glasses in a bucket.

Anyone prospective manager wishing to take this pub on, BEWARE. Empty promises from Jan, the owner, are hollow. They are never followed up.

Like to wish Darren & Frank all the best, you did a good job in difficult circumstances. The lack of support you received from the clueless owner says more about her than it does about you.

It's back to crap beer again folks. Good news for the Crown though.

The pub, under new Management team Frank, Darren & Andy, has 'come alive' again. Nice, friendly, welcoming staff.

The beer is very good indeed, the best beer in the High Street now, which is in contrast to the previous landlord, whose beer was quite frankly undrinkable. Customers that had been lost to other pubs are now returning. We never wanted much, just decent beer. We have that again !!!

Thankfully the buckets, that were strategically placed behind the bar, to collect the slops, to then be transferred back through the lines, under the previous regime, have now been removed.

Well done guy's

I have to say since the old manager left and a new manager appeared, this pub seems to have cleaned up its act. Just spent Friday and Saturday night in here and the entertainment was ace. Cheesy disco on Friday night and a Live band every Saturday.

Great Pub, live music at weekends, very reasonably priced too.

Does need a clean !! Friday/Saturday night entertainment is superb in comparison to the rest of Rayleigh's venues.

This pub is going down hill by the day.
It needs a good clean, and the beer is awful.
There are better pubs in Rayleigh.

This is an old school pub as well which I really like, the staff are very good even when it is busy, never seen any problems in this pub ever, good door staff, if you go would suggest it to a brush nite alternative have live acts on saturday as rule which can be hit and miss and have good crowd for football on staurdays and sundays, very good pub, dont have a bad word about it, open until 1am on weekends so cheaper option than brush and just as fun
conneelyboy - 8 Dec 2008 01:43
This was the place to go when not old enough to get in elsewhere.
Not my cup of tea (or beer for that matter!)
GROWBAG - 23 Jun 2006 14:08
not bad which makes it the best in Rayleigh
