After having my contemplative pint at the Eagle ruined by a tourist plague I scarpered in here. Probably doesn't get many tourists as it is a fairly bog standard place with no obvious pretensions, That said, it seemed popular with folk I assumed were locals, & my pint of Greene King IPA (3.10) was okay. Service was certainly friendlier & banter amongst customers & staff was an improvement on the caterwauling back at the Eagle.

Updating my 2009 opinions: I no longer like this place for lunch. The old simple snacks have been replaced by McDonalds-style fast food, off plastic menus. Horrible. Reduced range of beers and ales.

As for the interior: I rather like it. When you look closely there is a lot of old traditional woodwork about (Not wood veneer) and it must be a historic building of some relevance. But some of the seating is not very comfortable.

got to agree about the horrible interior.

basically an aesthetically vacant rectangular void enclosed within wood veneer.

seems to be popular with young students. the beer range wasn't memorable. not sure if they had an ale on.

Pretty poor selection of ales on tap, Speckled Hen was poorly kept, and just generally felt like a slightly upmarket Wetherspoons. Go nextdoor to the Eagle for a real pub.

Probably my favourite pub now for a down-to-earth unhurried lunch in Cambridge. Not crowded (thank goodness, because service can get slow when they are busy). Mixed range of customers from contractor's workmen, a few students, young office workers and shopping families at lunchtime. Greene King beers plus some good guest beers such as Black Sheep etc etc. Plain food comes from kitchen, well cooked in generous helpings. Food and beer appreciably cheaper than at the historic pub next door. Cheerful staff.

Called in for a pre concert drink on a Wednesday night. I was served very quickly despite the pub being fairly full with a crowd verging on the youthful side. They had Greene King IPA on draught and a guest beer from St Austell which I sampled. Not too bad a place to go and handy for the Corn Exchange and Soul Tree concert venues. Would have a drink in here again if I was in this vicinity.

Lively, mixed crowd, a lot of students (not a problem for me,) very friendly staff. Angle of the plasma screen from the wall could be slightly adjusted towards the rest of the pub. Have to deduct 1 point for that.

Waste of a great pub no real ales to mention and horrid interior and empty compared to the pub next door.. avoid.

Went for some food and a quick drink on a Saturday night. Bar was crowded and understaffed with only 2 people working, waited 15 minutes for a drink and was told food would take at least 30 minutes.
Would suggest this place best avoided between 6.30 and 7.30pm on a Saturday night if my visit anything to go by.

shedloads of vintage ladies. a place where youth goes to die. a below-average town centre boozer. go to an offy instead.

Great Pub with really really good food - one of the best pub lunches I've had at a great price too! Really good atmosphere and nice interior as well

I really can't believe this is now a Hogshead. What a waste.

This used to be a really lovely dark old pub, very popular with tourists. Now it's a shiny modern Hogshead. A terrible waste of a great pub. Fine, but hardly original.
