We love The Chequers and go as often as we can. Steak is always fantastic, as is the fish pie, mussels and the pate is to die for. Can't wait to get back for a huge sit down meal, with lovely red wine at very reasonable prices. I'm quite amazed at CPJames19's comments - the carvery is fantastic - not sure where you'd find such quality food at a cheaper price.
And then there's Snoopy - the best dog in the world.

We have started having bar lunches here again, after a very long gap. Our experience agrees with 'Realalediner': vg steak & Guinness pie, meaty with no gristle. The smoked haddock pie also vg. The puff pastry top was good but I suspect they are bought ready made in bulk. Good thin chips done perfectly, and fresh well-cooked veg though the portions could have been just a bit more generous. Good puddings. Prices are a little higher than average (almost 35 quid for 2 pies, 2 puds & 2 pints of beer).
Wherry (my wife's favourite) and recently Adnams new 'Ghost Ship' was on draught - a nice refreshing light ale with a hint of citrus. A bit like their 'Regatta' which is seasonal. Lots of locals around the bar on Saturday but it was easy to get a bar-room table before 1 o'clock.
Back in the 1970s a bunch of us who worked nearby used to lunch there occasionally, but the place went downhill a bit and then there were two serious fires. The last one virtually gutted the place and when it was rebuilt the thatch was replaced by tiles. It had an up-&-down reputation for a while so we avoided it, but now it can be warmly recommended for bar meals and a decent range of cask beers. I have no experience of carvery or more formal dining.
Do NOT feed their dog! Snoopy is on a special diet.

Rare beef ? I assume you mean "properly cooked beef" ? Visited this pub for the first time yesterday - fantastic barmaid !

From the outside of the pub we were impressed and we were greeted by a friendly barman. However, the carvery was a lot to be desired. There were a choice of two meats only, 1 being ham the other being a rare beef there was no other selection of meats. We asked the server if we could have some well-done beef instead but he refused. There wasn't much selection of vegetables but what there was, were hard. After finishing our meal and the plates were collected we were asked how our meals were, after describing the problems to the waitress there was no apology but lame excuses. To add to the problems the food was overpriced - you have been warned.

The Chequers is an Olde Worlde pubh with beams in the centre of a small Cambridgeshire village
I visited on Tuesday lunchtime. Not you would think the best time to see a pub at its busiest and best. Real ales on were Woodfordes Wherry, Adnams Broadside, Timothy Taylors Landlord and Greene King IPA. GK is my local pint and I have tried all the others. I settled for a pint of Landlord followed by three pints of Wherry. The beer was all in prime condition. The barmaid was very friendly and extremely efficient. Handling table bookings and the bar service. The Chequers was not extremely busy but there were a group of eight. These were obviously regular customers and knew the pub well. On their lunch break I guess. There were a number of further customers some of whom were seemingly regulars. All ordered meals and the food looked very good.
Th landlord was friendly and chatty. The Chequ7ers is well worth a visit if you are in the area and more than likely a good destination for a reasonable evening meal. Maybe the Fish and chip night with mushy peas, the curry night or the pudding night. The barmaid tried to explain this to me, but it seemed very complicated. Maybe it was the effect of The Wherry.

Went here for lunch in early April 2009 . Really excellent. Food is tasty, well cooked and served nicely. Beer too. I had a pint of a guest Cornish ale, Doom Bar from Sharp's Brewery at Rock in Cornwall. Excellent. There were others of a similar tempting nature.
The steak and ale pie had absolutely no gristle and was served with separate dishes of thin cut chips and freshly cooked vegetables of the season. Only possible criticism was the separately baked puff pastry top. My wife's baked potato was lovely and fluffy and served with a rocket sald . Even her half of lager was fine! - but then I am an ale man myself!
Another good sign (always a good indicator) was the super cleanliness of both men's and women's loos.
A welcoming and well run pub. Will certainly go there again.

Lovely looking pub from outside, Great food and friendly service inside, Had the burger, real tasty!!!! looking forward to our next visit- fish and chip night came highly recommended

Relaxed pub with a lovely seating area outside for when it's sunny. Good food and great pavlovas.

Went to Cequers had soup with bluebottle in. Young lady apolagised and offered to replace with something else.I thanked her but declined.My sister was put off and did not eat her home burger.I paid and asked for the 2 items to be taken off.The landlord shouted he would take off soup in the country flies are all around, would I refuse to drive my car if it had had a fly in it.After an argument I paid including uneaten burger.Landlord shouted as I went to my car "there`s a wasp it might come near you".FLIES IN FOOD NORMAL??? A VERY LOUD RUDE LANDLORD.
