user reviews of the Angel Inn, Lyme Regis

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Long closed so am taking the opportunity to review Cellar 59 in Lyme instead - a new place on Broad Street not yet on Beer in the Evening. It's effectively a brewery tap for the excellent and innovative Gyle 59 Brewery and several of their offerings on ta alongside ones from other 'craft' ale producers including the superb Siren from Berkshire. Their Viennese Whirlpool was especially goo while Gyle's coffee flavoured dark effort also hit the spot. As for the Angel, it seems to have been run into the ground by Palmers along side another pub in Lyme, the Three Cups.

Twenty years ago this was a REAL gem of a pub, the decline has been gathering pace over the years. It is off the main thoroughfare and is easily missed. to exacerbate its problems it closes at 2:30 just as people leave the beach and fancy a pint ! A decent guvnor would make a fortune running this place properly but I feel that is now to late to turn this place around.

A new landlord/lady are trying to make a go of this previously troubled pub, very friendly need to be given a chance to turn things round with the help- of tier regulars and any passer-by's who fancy a quick jar. worth calling into

Lyme Regis can be an unfriendly and insular town and it takes a long time for new comers to be accepted. Yet the crew from the Angel were friendly and welcoming right from the start. Although the interior is not very inviting I would rather drink at the Angel than in one of the other pubs in town where if you're a new face you are totally ignored.

Anybody see this pub in the paper today? (Mirror page 20)
Probably unfair to judge as we've only walked pass the place, but we won't be popping in any time soon.

Not a dump but a pub where a game of pool and some decent music is the order of the day.

Up and coming?
More like down and going.

Many years ago this deserved to be in the guide but it has gone down hill FAST now it is a veritable DUMP!

Funny little dump of a pub. Someone has tried to make it very trendy, in a sort of ironic retro 80's chic style ( at least I guess it must be irony, they cannot think this is stylish, can they?)
Full of noisy pop music. One for the kids, really.

Yes, has changed hands - live music is up and coming.

Can't see how this place ever got in the guide.

Recently done up and, yes, it's worse! Palmers really don't have any idea when it comes to doing pubs up - still stuck in the 1980s. Sell it off as a house!

Glad to see the back of bad rubbish. Maybe now they'll get a decent landlord

the angel inn has just reopened after extensive refurbishment and is now under new management with a whole new modern look. we are open to all, families welcome. we show all live sports and are open til 2am on friday's and saturday's. With a great selection of real ales & super chilled lagers at reasonable prices. coming in the future will be live entertainment and a ladies night! Aparently having the best (inside)toilets and pool table in lyme so come on in and support your sports team on any of the 4 32" LCD Tv's or the 42" plasma TV and soak up the atmosphere. If your local and interested in entering a skittles, pool or darts team in next years league please contact us.

soon to be open

This pub closed down in April 2005 - so I am not surprised the crisps were stale - reopening soon after refurbishment though.
Creek - 13 Apr 2006 02:37
Sorry, but this place needs serious refurbishment! The beer from the cask was flat and the crisps stale. Used to be good but not now.
