well its been a while but its much the same - a food pub with room for a few drinkers. Fullers usual ale. Great location but disinterested staff ruin it. Better pubs nearby.

Good, but not as good as still and west. serves Pride, ESB, HSB, Honeydew, Seafarers and a seasonal.

Fairly poor pint of Fuller's Red Fox, lacking condition and starting to go sour. At £3.80 for Red Fox; £4.05 for Guinness and £4.25 for Aspall's Cyder it just isn't value for money. Typical exploitation of the tourist establishment.

Visited this pub today. Only had a sandwich, but it was the best sandwich I have ever had. Steak and stilton with onion and mushrooms. Rocket lettuce, dill and a few crisps. Delicious. My partner had jacket potato with prawns which looked just as good. Will return for food.

The bridge tavern isnt really much of a pub, more like a harvester in feel - and I have never yet had a decent meal here. Ale is fine though but 50p a pint dearer than the Buckingham in high street. Use it on a pub crawl or try sitting in the corner where the seafaring folk stake their claim - that would make for an interesting 5 minutes.

came here the other week with a friend..good beer and good service...just what you need just what you want

I use this pub for the working locals - local seafaring folk - not common in many of the other local pubs in the area. Spend some time literally at the bar and you will meet genuine, down to earth, working folk with many an interesting tale to tell. Priceless.

As we live quite near to the Bridge Tavern, my partner and I had often spoken of going there for a meal, as it looks so friendly and homely. It isn't. The venue's perhaps ok for a drink - either outside overlooking the docks or inside in the traditional pub decor.

Beyond that, though, it was just a series of bitter disappointments.

We decided to try it for a Sunday lunch, and popped in at around 13h30 on Sunday 8th August 2010. We hadn't booked, so we did expect a bit of a delay. However, the restaurant was hardly at capacity ... there were empty tables all round downstairs, upstairs (where we sat) was completely vacant aside from us and a family of four, and outside was mostly people having pints in the sun. So, from that perspective, they should not have struggled too much to push out what were two standard plates of Sunday beef roast.

When I reached the counter, we were informed that there would be at least an hour's wait for our food. We decided to hang around, as we could have a chat until lunch arrived, and we assumed that if it took that long, it would probably be fresh and good quality.

However, lunch took an hour and twenty minutes to arrive at our table, without any offer of a breadroll or olives to keep us going. When the meal arrived, the plates and cutlery were plonked down at the end of the table for us to slide across, so I guess either they're not interested in service or the person wasn't used to serving restaurant guests.

The vegetables were luke-warm and the meat was tough, dry and rubbery. It tasted like it had been waiting in the oven since that morning, so why it would take over an hour to reach our table is beyond understanding. My partner could not eat his meat.

The portion of vegetables was at least a decent size, and tasted ok, but was cool to luke warm.

We thought of complaining, but considering the lack of interest displayed at the till and with the delivery of the food, we didn't hold much confidence that the staff would be aware of how to deal with such a complaint. Bearing in mind that we had arrived at around 1pm, ordered around 1.30pm and it was around 3pm when the food arrived at our tables, we were also so hungry by that stage that we ate what we could and left the rest and then just left.

I did, however, feel I should bring it to the manager's attention, and emailed the manager through the contact details given on the Fuller's brewery website, on the same day. The manager has - to date - not offered any apology or explanation.

My advice is, if you're thinking of dining out in Old Portsmouth, find somewhere else. If you're looking for a pint overlooking the docks, then the Bridge Tavern may still be worth a go.

typical soulless managed house, why serve frozen fish when you have 2 fishmongers within 100yds, pting chicken anyone?

I visited this pub on Sunday evening with some family members and although the staff were very friendly and welcoming we were very disappointed with the food. I did return my old mum's fish which wasnt cooked properly and they did take 15% off the bill and went off to cook another piece but it spoiled the meal for her unfortunately. My potatoes werent cooked properly and the bit of fennel on my plate with it was hard and I couldnt cut it! Anyway the 2 that ordered fish and chips really enjoyed it but we wont be going back I'm afraid.

What a shame the food didnt match the atmosphere and the situation!

Been to this pub many times.....Been in and out with the new management that took over a few years ago.
Drinks still pricey but thats expected.
Food however has gone downhill - We had much more of a range last year, now were left with a few bits and bobs on the menu.
Not a major problem for me as I always choose the steak (sometimes comes good, sometimes over cooked)
However my partner dislikes most of the food and has to order fish and chips - which the fish is frozen, not fresh.
We come back to the pub every so oftern as it dose have a good presence about it - NYE was good - however we go else where for food.

Not sure whats happened - was a great pub - Summer was awesome - Lets hope the menu changes soon!!!!

Reading the reviews, I wonder if people are talking about the same pub I visit regularly. I have found the food consistently of good quality and for a pub, good value. As for the beer, Fullers offer a range of ales for most tastes and I've never had a duff pint of Pride at the Bridge. I've found the staff helpful and to illustrate this, although the chowder was not on the menu, they rustled two bowls up for us which was excellent service in my opinion. Yes, it's a Fullers pub but I reckon the staff and management there are trying their best to make it a bit different. Keep up the good work.

Visited this pub recently as I knew it was in the Good Beer Guide. I was quite disappointed though. Only Fullers/Gales ales on offer (the same old, same old). Very pricy and lacking proper pub feel. Staff not really interested. Such a shame as it could be a real gem in its harbourside location. Would like to see regularly changing guest ales, but I think food is the pub's main concern.

Nicely located pub in Portsmouth harbour. Unfortunately the beers are all from Fullers - London Pride, ESB, HSB, Butser Bitter and Over The Bar. We still had a pleasant time sat outside watching the boats coming in and out.

A pleasant find in Portmouth. A superb pint of HSB; sadly there were only Fullers beers on, and given the choice I wouldn't normally drink them after their treatment of Gales, but if there's no choice. But it tasted good anyway. I had a really delicious, if slightly unusual, pork fillet with some kind of stuffing. The bar staff were very knowledgeable and friendly. Overall, good value and an enjoyable experience.

Found this pub not so bad, beer a bit pricy but you expect that in this area but it was in fairly good condition especally the HSB. Staff were friendly enough and efficient, will certainly call in again when back down the south coast.

Haven't been in here for a while as I don't live down there any more but I used to love coming here for lunch of a Sunday, food excellent with plenty of good beer choices. Sitting outside is nice on a sunny day watching the ferries come and go in and out and soaking up the fresh salty air.

Charming old pub in beautiful surroundings. Perfect for a quiet pint in the evening or for a nice meal. Under new management recently and the change has seen a larger range of seafood specials recently, plaice, haddock, monkfish, barramundi have all been added. Ale quality has also seen an improvement since the management change.

Decent beer, imaginative menu, competently served. interesting location, no free parking though.

We used to go to this lovely pub for a long time, then we stopped, we went back after a year or so, we wont be going back again.
We were greeted with red lipstick all over the wine glass, and the main course we ordered with seafood containing mussels etc etc didnt have any mussels and not much sea food either.
In general we found it over priced for food and drinks. and not impressed with the staff either, after you complain about 2 things, quite justifiably it was like water off a ducks back.
They have just lost 4 customers.

Olde world charm, good plain food, usually has a guest beer or local special. On the camber dockside old portsmouth, so you'd better like the smell of fish if you sit outside in summer.
