June 26 reopening after major refurbishment - into gastropub.

Will be dog friendly - handy for adjacent Reigate Heath.

Plenty of parking and a beer garden - and on the edge of town, on A25.

Being refurbished by new owners - expected to reopen mid-June.

Really good pint always. Not had the food but if it is half as good as the beer!

Had a referb' and under new management.

Lost all of its charm and ambiance, it cant seem to decide if its a pub or a restaurant. Still has Pilgrim on tap so one plus point, but there are better local alternatives,

Reasonable pub and good to visit when dog walking in the summer (lots of space outside). Very much laid out inside for eating and casual drinkers are a bit crowded into a small seating area. One large group can easily take over the whole area. You can sit at tables designated for eating but you tend to feel you are outcasts and the atmosphere is not comfortable.

really friendly chat from the manager and barman on sunday at about 5pm after the rush had died down good clean pub food seems to be simpler food offering these days but cant comment on quality yet as i didnt eat

You won't get better service in Reigate town. Beer always good, comfortable places tyo sit if you only want a drink and great food if you are after a meal. Really friendly and helful managers and most willing bar staff.

In here on 11 June. Harvey's (3.40), Directors and Young's Bitter. Looks like it is aimed at food. Helpful barman, large garden.
GuideDogSaint - 23 Jul 2011 22:08
Selling a very nice pint of Pilgrim Surrey tonight - 3.40 so yes quite expensive, but the landlord has to buy it through Punch.

beer pricey, but the staff are friendly, and the pub is far enough out of Reigate to keep away most of the idiots.

thumbs up from me.

On the face of it this should be a great pub unfortunately it isn't and that is all down to poor quality of service and the food. My wife & I went in for a drink and a meal. Mine was ok but my wife's was awful. We complained to the waitress who laughed nervously and walked off. We decided to leave immediately and went to the bar to pay. I was going to make a further comment when the chef appeared from the kitchen and stood behind the bar staring threateningly at us ! Won't be going back....ever.

Good pub for winter. Food quite good, but a little expensive. Senior staff a little standoffish. Nice garden.

Visited a few times over Xmas,New Year and had amazing Porter from the Pilgrim brewery. Nice place, although a little pricey ! seems to divide into large food trade and locals with dogs around the bar.Menu reads well but I did not eat here.

Great pub which serves a mean Addlestones cider, lovely garden in the summer, found the food a bit Hit and miss though- sometimes its amazing others just so so!

Good pub and food - and on the A25. However, the nearby Skimmington Castle (mentioned in previous posts, and in a fine rural location) is back at its best - and probably just pips the BH for overall quality. Book at both!
dolphoxe - 6 Sep 2009 15:46
The current tenants of this pub took over in late 2007 and apparently used to run the Skimmington Castle, which i suppose explains the rise of the Black Horse and the demise of the Skimmie. The steak i had here (rib-eye) did not come with a steak knife, despite being medium rare (as asked for) mainly cos it didn't need it - the steak was so very tender and the vegetables nicely cooked instead of all this nearly raw rubbish. The Whitebait are "to die for" - the puds are just Mmmmmmmmm

An absolutely brilliant pub / restaurant - went for my dad's 90th - they couldn't do enough for us, nothing was too much trouble. Excellent food, excellent service - what more can i say, except, try it !!
Sparkle271051 - 28 Jun 2009 23:39
very good looking pub, good beer and nice garden, but, and this is big but, the food was awful when we ate there, a medium steak came out black on the outside and raw in the middle, an the 'new' potatoes with the fish where far from new we needed the steak knife cut cut the leather like skin on them, very dissapionting on what could be a great foody pub.
bedbob - 27 Jan 2009 15:51
New management and chefs - providing excellent fare. Rumour has it that the rise of the Black Horse is the reason for the Skimmington Castle's closure.
mapwizard - 17 Oct 2008 14:50
Its over priced and needs a new chefs. hopefully new management will arrive just in time to save this pub. lets start praying

I went to this pub for Sunday lunch.

Firstly i'd like to say that the staff were excellent.
Very helpful and extremely friendly.
The garden is small but very pretty and relaxing and there's plenty of parking.
The pub is really nice inside. Loads of tables and a few leather sofas to relax on. The pub doesn't allow children so if you want a quiet drink it's excellent.

The food however was a REAL let down.
It was over priced rubbish. The meat in both the lamb and beef Sunday roast was hard and over cooked. The vegetables were small and pretty pathetic and there was so much gravy the food was literally swimming. Not worth the 10 asking price.

My mum had the risotto (also 10) which was literally plain boiled rice and a couple of shrimps. No sauce and no flavour. My girlfriend had the mushroom and brandy parscel which was under cooked with a soggy pastry.

To be fair to the manageress (who was also very lovely) we were given two free meals and a round of drinks, but this was because two of the dishes were wrong and were going to take another 20 minutes to arrive, and not because the standard of food was so bad.

It was a real let down as it's such a nice looking pub. Great for drinks. Not so great for eating.

I have to disagree with others about this pub. I was unaware when going during the day that they did not like parents with children in the garden area and only found out from a fairly rude waitress that we had to leave and she more or less ushered us out the car park.

I fail to see why you are not allowed a child in a pub garden on a Sunday afternoon while meeting with friends, as a parent I feel discriminated against.

One to avoid.

It's not a Young's pub, never was
nickdavies - 15 Apr 2007 18:09
I quite liked the decor at this place. The food was overpriced (but OK quality) on my visit and the beer was acceptable.
Psi - 27 Nov 2006 13:32
This website is BEERintheEVENING.com, and I would suggest that this is a nice place to have a quiet drink. I returned last night and saw nothing to change my opinion from my previous review in January.

It's clean and tidy, the staff are friendly, and the no children policy is a real treat. (Why should everybody have to pander to the "family market" anyway? Pubs are for adults, that's why they sell things kids aren't allowed to have) But pea-green painted toilets? Hmmm.

Overall, definitely worth a try.

A confused pub at juxtaposition with itself and full of contradiction.

On the one hand it is decorated like a gastro-pub but there are horse brasses on the wall. There are also pot plants and leather sofas which almost convey a kind of colonial atmosphere. As a result the pub just doesn't seem to have any real identity and feels fake.

It's a Young's pub, and you are usually in fairly safe hands here, but not in this instance.

The food was extortionately expensive (went on a Sunday) - 7 for a starter and 12.50 for a main course. Both were not good. I had red snapper which was served over-cooked with soggy veg that should have been served with the roasts and did not go with the fish at all. My girlfriend had a portion-control pie-in-a-pot that was more like soup under pastry than anything even worth giving to your mother in laws dying dog.

For the two of us, with only one drink apiece, our lunch bill came to over 45 and I can safely say I would have had a better meal at a Road chef. Not only was it the worst pub lunch I have ever ever ever eaten, it was also the most expensive.

Do your pallet and wallet a favour; stay away, learn to cook, find another pub, whatever, just dont go here.

The pub also does not let any kids in under 16, even to dine if accompanied by adults, including the beer garden (grass area next to car-park on main road), which gives an indication of the kind of pompous, pretentious market they are trying to fool. How anybody would be fooled by serving up last nights vomitous left overs is beyond me though.

Weird. You think you've gone into a department store furniture showroom by mistake.

Gastropub pretensions, so horridly expensive, a fiver for a bowl of tomato soup, I ask you. Standard beer range. But it is clean and tidy and they are nice to you. Not worth an expedition considering the outstanding alternatives hereabouts.
nickdavies - 24 Jun 2006 19:18
It's OK this.

Yes, it's in Reigate and therefore it is just what you'd expect from a mid-Surrey pub geared up for the dining market (ie not one for the mods and rockers amongst us). But if catching up with friends for a quiet pint or two is your bag, then this will be right up your alley.

One note of caution: the big array of sofas in the middle of the bar look comfy enough, but they are very, very low. The bigger-boned members of society might never be able to get up.

I visited this pub the other day and was very pleasantly suprised. Apparantly it has recently completely changed with more room for a reasonably sized restaurant and bar area. It serves fantastic food and a good range of wines and beers. The restaurant has a light and airy atmosphere and there are comfy sofas in the bar area including a flat screen tv where some sports are screened now and again(cricket, rugby - not usually football). The toilets are a real treat! Children are not catered for but as there are plenty of other pubs in the area who do attract this type of trade I thought it made a change to have somewhere of high quality without children running around. I'd really recommend a visit.

The moon has more atmosphere! Another good family pub now turned into singleton's pub!!
scooterroy - 20 Feb 2005 19:28
Legendary in the 90's when run by Linda, The Black Horse fell into the hands of Asian tennants who served Japanese and Korean food. It was run into the ground and stood derelict for a couple of years before having lots of money hosed at it in 2004. Major interior changes plus an extention seriously changed the pub into a very expensive and very bright food pub. There's nothing much bad about it with the exception of price (18 for a steak without chips?!) and lack of charm of the original.
