user reviews of the Jolly Sailor, Farnham

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Absolutely fantastic choice of four local beers in excellent condition. There are 2 Greene King and 2 GK list guests which we naturally didn't bother with given the aforementioned choice. The best I had was a Long Dog Porter which was superb. The walk from the station was just over 15 minutes but well worth it to what must be the best real ale pub in Farnham. Never thought I'd say that about GK pub as I can't stand their beers.

A Saturday afternoon visit to Farnham for football and a chance to visit the 3 pubs that feature in the 2016 GBG.

First up is the Greene King managed Jolly Sailor on West Street just past the football ground. Externally and internally this is an attractive pub with a warm welcome from the landlord on my arrival at the bar.

It's partly partisoned inside creating a split seating area, to the left of the bar is a tv that on my visit was on mute and showing motor racing. There are 2 gardens , one to the rear and the sun trapped side garden which is where I sat catching the afternoon sun.

8 hand pumps with 7 ales on, a mix of GK ales & ales from the local area, in this weather I went for a light ale and choose a pint of Bonds Brew Goldihops @ 3.9%, a nicely kept ale.

The 2 pub Alsatians looked very hot & bothered and certainly weren't very menacing in this heat!

I stopped just for 1 pint before heading to football, it's a nice pub and another tick for me.

In early 2013 new tenants moved into the Jolly Sailor, spruced it up without destroying its atmosphere as a real "local", and persuaded the owners (Greene King) to allow them to sell a range of beers "free of tie". The more "impolite" customers of previous times have been successfully discouraged and there is now a great mix of local people using the pub. Beer prices are fairer than the town centre pubs although this is only a 5 to 10 minutes walk away. Food is simple and good value, too. As well as the ubiquitous GK IPA and Abbot, there is usually a rarer GK draught ale (recently Belhaven Burns Brown, Howell's Frosty Bells) and at least one guest beer, but usually three. These come from mainly local breweries such as Longdog, Itchen Valley, Ascot, Tillingbourne or Windsor & Eton, often including a dark ale such as mild or stout. Landlords Iain and Sarahjane are a little reserved until you get to know them, but work hard to make this a great pub. Music takes place most Friday and Saturday evenings. Ignore the prat who describes Sarahjane as Hitler, she's a pussycat, and was only trying to get a rather unprofessional band member to meet the needs of the pub and its customers after several earlier requests to adjust their volume!

Doing all the right things, refurbished, good selection of real ales, live music etc etc. but my message to the new owners is lighten up for gods sake, the landlady has all the charm of adolph hitler without his charisma, "turn the music down, turn the music down". As for the landlord, go on crack a smile you're in the hospitality trade now, people are in your boozer for a good time at least give the impression that you are glad to see them even if you're not

A quick review. New tenants for a couple of months now. 6 handpumps still on 3 are Green King (not tried) and 3 guests (under Green King's Local Hero scheme). Tried the guests and all in very good nick indeed. Food loos like good value - e.g. pub classics £6-£7 (excellent for Farnham). Some rooms are being done up for B&B puroposes. Comfortable inside and decked area by the side. Fantastic.

Visited here twice this week to a refurbished and re-launched venue. The interior has had an excellent facelift and is of a very high spec finish. The semi-nautical theme is easy on the eye and the fittings & furnishings are of the highest quality, making it homely and comfortable throughout. An excellent decked area to the front and a secluded garden to the rear make pleasant retreats for relaxing in. Very well prepared food. Made with care and attention, not generic "gastro pub" rubbish, but tasty and flavoursome. Beers well kept, well priced and with great variety. Wine at a reasonable pub price, friendly and genuinely caring staff make it a pleasure to drink and dine here.

Glad I can post a review here as a new one is well overdue.

Chanced upon this place last Saturday whilst wandering round the town and had a very enjoyable few hours. Walked in at a time that live football was on the tv, maybe a couple of dozen people in the pub.

Found the service very pleasant and the majority of clientele were absolutely spot on. There was an issue with a small group of obnoxious individuals but they were dealt with in due course and credit must go to the Landlord.

Enjoyed a few pints, real ale is well looked after. Apologies I cannot recall what I had...must pay more attention next time (or carry a notebook!)

Sincerely hope other reviewers in the future have a positive experience and can get this pub the rating it deserves.

bloody expensive, clicky landlord/lady, ok for locals but I was frowned upon as were my friends.

I was in here last Bank Holiday Monday and found it to be a very pleasent little pub. 3 hand pumpt selling GK Abbott & IPA (not bad @ 2.25 a pint)
The guest ale was H&H Old Trip.
With regard to the last review...got asked to leave as only drinking coke???
Sorry don't beleive you must have been more to it then that???

Stopped by this pub on sunday the 24th Jan to watch the football and have a relaxed afternoon. Despite the fact that we were each buying drinks and playing pool (which was 70p a game), we were told to leave by the barmaid. When I asked the reason for this, she claimed it was because "we were only drinking cokes" and that "the pub was not a communal area". For one thing, only a few of us had ordered cokes, most of us ordering pints of lager (although surely the pub makes more money from cola due to the lack of alcohol tax and how cheap it is to produce?). And surely a pub is a communal area? We were bewildered, and stated that we would not come back, to which we were told "good, and tell your friends not to come here either". This is very ironic as our friends in farnham are locals there, and I later found out that they are on good terms with that same barmaid.
I would strongly advise others not to visit this pub, as we were led into an embarrasing and insulting situation, for a reason that the barmaid seemed unable to disclose.

Great place, good atmosphere with friendly locals, has pool, darts, quiz/jukebox and small slabbed 'garden' a tad pricey mind.

Stopped in here last night for a brief bottle of beer. Seemed nice enough! Small crowd of people watching the football and smiling barmaid.

Wow we're now into week two of the refurb. The place looks like Beirut at the moment, and I have my doubts wether these boys will be finished on time. That aside we are sched to reopen for business on Saturday 27th Jan. This will enable both of us to iron out any creases or kinks in the lines before our official reopening date/party....12:00 2nd of Feb where, amongst other things we'll be featuring a free buffet and samples of the new lunch menu being launched. There will also be the launch of our win a barrel of beer competition!!
Look forward to seeing some of you around.

I once dropped my wallet in here many a-moon ago, had to kick it all the way home.

The jolly sailor in Farnham is under new management.
Julie and Don took over the reins begining to mid October. An extensive refurb is planned by the brewery soon which will include the B&B accom.
Like a trad pub and good beer. Pay us a visit.
