Visited for the first time last weekend, a decent pub with 6 well kept casks. Food orientated, although we didn't eat there.

Good pub, good food, pleasant staff, always found it to be a freindly establishment serving a good selection of cask beers.

Enjoying the comments regarding this place. I used to spend a lot of time here and at one time I too would have disagreed with Mgeraty's comments. Truth is though, it has, ot like wine, aged badly with time.

It is now a place visited once and then steered clear of util you forget how bad it was...then go back and remember!! Sorry GOLF50... You should liste to the customer, you would do much better...

Moved into the area recetly from Chew Moor and initially visited another local pub in the area. When using the local taxi firms and going past Bob Smithys I often asked what it is like? The reveiews are always daming and based on the attitude of the people drinking in the pub but mostly the landlady and land lord. essentially that they believe they are running a 5 start Hilton-esq hotel and unless you behave in a way fitting to those places, they won't like you.

Regardless, we eventually went in... And how true the real reviews are. Awful. They have a selection of ok ales, the environment is cold and reminds me of my grans sitting room. Extremely cold and that isnt just the decor. We had the fortune of seeing the landlady. Dressed like the queen mum but without the substance and grace. It is true, this could be a fantastic pub and has the potential of great things, unfortunately just not with the current owners. The place was empty and apparantly it usually is and I can see why. Rude staff and more shocking, a rude landlady. I am guessing the landlord has deep pockets. In summer I hear it gets busy with the walkers and people driving by, who dont know what to expect. Rather like "The Shop" in a League of Gentlemen.

There are other pubs in the area and until things change 100%, we wont be going in there again. Dont waste your time or money!!!

Been going in here from time to time for 5 years now. Of course laughed when they made it look like a Blackppol cheap hotel, also watched some of the locals go up their own backside, but nowbthe landlord is even starting to look down on his locals. What a waste when it could be so special. Rumours are that they are going to knock through next door and open a restaurant. That will give the owners even more reason to look down their noses at people. Such a waste :0(

Retreated here after the strange disappearance of cask from the Howcroft. Apart from the dentists waiting room decor three pints of Arizona went down well.

Six reasonably priced ales including a few (Bank Top) locals. I have nothing bad to say about this pub except for the dcor - it should be cosy but it comes across as sterile.

First visit since the pub was redecorated. It is now in an off-white dominated hotel-bar-in-Blackpool inspired scheme which, though professionally done, is a tad out of place in a stone pub up on the Lancashire moors. It is worth going to to look at the regulars, though. If you wondered where all the successful Thatcher era people who emerged from council estates to do well in double glazing and car sales have gone, look no further. Proving that expensive designer clothes and accessories don't necessarily make people look good, it's worth going just to look at the footwear.....

That aside, sitting outside on a summers evening with a glass of cask ale, looking down over a panorama that takes in the Peak District, the distant North Wales mountains right up to the Lake District kind of makes up for a lot.

OK pub a bit clicky nothing to rave about tho

Last 3 occasions it was closed well into drinking hours. You would think a Saturday afternoon about 4 on a hot day they would be doing a roaring trade. At least 10 other thirsty people arrived to a locked door as I waited for the bus to come.

Called in the other Sunday.
"Two pints of Flat Cap please," said my mate.
"Five pounds please," said the barmaid.
"**********" said my mate.
We left.

A recent visit revealed a gloomy pub with tired beers. What's happened to Bet Lynch?
manstein - 19 Jan 2009 23:29
A pity the welcome in here isn't as warm as the beer!
They really need to turn the coolers up when the weather is hot, both the beer and lager were far to warm last night.

Seemed OK five years ago with roaring fire and acceptable beer if not a touch pricey. Recent Saturday lunchtime found the pub cold and uninviting and selling a cloudy pint of Timothy Taylor's Best at 2.30. You don't have to go far to find considerably better.

Another pub were pig-ignorant regulars won't move from the bar to allow you to get served.
Once you are there you will wonder why you bothered as the equally pig-ignorant staff will ignore you.

If you are over 50 and wear Marks&Spencer jumpers you will love it!!

health & hygeine would be mortified if they knew that beer went back into the next pint. you make enough profit without breaking the law. just serve virgin beer and be happy with your proffits.

Nice pub but the beer isn't very consistent and is pricy.

I've been in tonight, no telly, no jukebox, super pint of Bolton brewed beer, if it wasn't so far away I'd be in every night.

Nice pub, hand pumped beer, bonny barmaids and fantastic views (apart from the barmaids)
Beer a bit expensive but well worth a vist

In superb location on the edge of the moors with views to the High Peak, North Wales and the Lake District. Good selection of beers. Great people watch in the evening, with wiggy and golf attired retired buisnessmen trying to chat up the barmaids plus porcine and loud success stories from the 80's flaunting the sovereign rings. Landlady tries for class and achieves Bet Lynch. Worth a visit.
