Lovely spacious pub, catches the sun (when it appears), friendly staff. Best Sunday lunch we have found in the area.

A great pub with good food and a good selection of drink. Freindly and professional staff and the manager has really done a great job in keeping an attractive atmosphere.

Great local pub.

Avoid at all costs - terrible food and awful service last time I visited - which coincidentally will be the last time I visit this place.

NIce pub in a stark, slightly strange part of London.
The BBC near-by means media types for lunch and after work drinks and then a more desolate local crowd later at night. So expect a very eclectic demographic which is how a boozer should be.
It sells very nice grub (especially the burgers) and the beer offering is pretty decent.
The Xmas tree this year is bleedin huge which is good as it makes one feel cosy and toasty as you walk in the door.
The only complaint is that there are telly boxes on the walls. Why do people need to watch T.V. down the pub? I have an idea....Have a conversation!!!! Oh, maybe it's the BEEB lot wanting to watch their handy craft after work. Nice one Auntie.
(9/10)

I can go on and on about this pub, but will cut straight to it. What a great boozer. Some have warned me about going there, but I had to see for myself. And am I glad I did. Upon walking in the open plan that greets you gives you a warm feeling. I decided to visit in the evening, and ambience is as good a word as any. The tall South African fella behind the bar was doing a great job as setting the atmosphere, by making suttle chages to the lighting and the volume of the music as and when it was required. At first I thought he was the manager, but was shocked to here that he was only a supervisor. He informed me very kindly that the manager of the pub was also the headchef who had earlier cooked my steak(and what a steak) for me.
I will delight in telling more people about The North Pole. Thanks to the staff who made my evevning there a great one.

I ate here last week and although I wouldn't normally come onto a website like this to post a review, I felt I had to. My advice.... STAY AWAY. The food here is awful, only surpassed by the service, which is atrocious. My food was under-cooked, yet when I asked politely if it could be cooked for a little longer I was told to get on with it and eat it. I wouldn't come back here in a million years. I had been told that the new management had made a bad pub better... in fact they have somehow made it worse.

Well I just had to register after seeing some of the posts regarding this pub. Granted, as a local resident I too have had high expectations for this pub, and to be fair have been let down on a couple of occassions. The bitters have been rough at times, the food, mainly chips, has been iffy and the Sky keeps breaking. However after a beer and chat with the new manager on Tuesday when I couldn't watch QPR on TV, I understand what is happening and wait with anticipation for a great local to go to now certain things have happened and money spent. Take time to talk to him, I forget his name but he is the chef as well, and very passionate about what he does.

I had high expectations for this pub (my local) after the renovation in late 2007, but it has gone severely down in both food and drink quality. They increased the number of cask ales, but the quality is very poor. I've felt ill after only a single pint of real ale. It was cloudy and smelled off (no the first time). The chef, who had been there for several years, is gone and the replacement staff is awful. The bar staff changes weekly performs poorly most of the time. I would recommend avoiding this pub if possible.

We live in thearea and this pub has been transformed after a long and sad decline. A very clever use of north pole related insignia on the walls and a complete revamp in terms of service and products makes this the best pub in the area now. Good real ales and a very nice crowd. Food good too -ate a really good steak and kidney pie. We will be back

Think hard before you go here !!! The pub has a nice open room, fairly basic but a good open fresh atmosphere and a big telly with sport on. But the service was dire, really dire. I had organised sarnies and chips for 20 guys after a local football match, and watched the staff wait until the bread went hard before they served it. They refused to put the food on our table but shoved it in a corner, upon pointing this out, I was told off for my attitude, I could go on....Really, go somewhere else !!!

This pub used to be quite nice 2 years ago when we started to come after climbing. But this year it really has lost it. The place is drab, they never have any ales in (the pumps are always empty), and now they have very strong lights on all the time! The football is always on, and I have nothing against football in pubs but it only attracts 3-5 grubby looking types who never actually order anything.

What happened to this place? It wasn't the greatest pub before, but it felt alright. Now it feels like it's perpetually about to close down. I say avoid this place at all costs. Try the greek place down latimer road for a nice pint and good conversation with the wacky owner.

My family visited the North Pole for a meal not so long ago as we know the manager very well. Although it may sound biased, we couldn't fault the place. The food was excellent and the service was 2nd to none. Never been on a weekend so can't comment on the chavs but I have to say our experience was highly enjoyable.
ST2004 - 27 Jul 2006 16:10
I have visited this place a few times now and am one of the people who think it has a bit of a chav problem. It did get better recently and I said so but it has deteriorated to such a point its even worse than when I first commented on it. If you are looking for a cool, laid back place, this isnt it. In fact this is about as far away from cool and laid back as you can get. Try somewhere else, anywhere will do.
anonymous - 27 Jun 2006 16:03
To anonymous!!! Since you obviously work for the place I dont think your comments have much merit. To everyone else, house music will probably drown out the sound of fist on face, and your brain, better still find a bar that has more going for it than a friendly landlord (never seen them) and a desperate DJ!!!!!!
persia - 25 May 2006 16:42
they have a really friendly landlord and he has made a good choice in getting a DJ each Friday. The DJ plays well chosen House music and creates a positive atmosphere. No chance of fighting chavs when J plays
anonymous - 24 May 2006 20:51
Have to agree with the comments about being full of chavs been in this pub twice and twice have witnessed trouble. Wouldnt recommend this pub or the area to anyone. The comments by anonymous below!! about pretentious yuppies are so far wide of the mark it beggars belief. Do you work for the bar or What? You wouldnt get a yuppie to pass wind outside this place let alone drink in it!!!
persia - 17 May 2006 13:30
A very charming pub with lovely bar staff and regulars the only thing that will put you off is the overly pretentious 'yuppies' who refer to the regulars as 'chavs' Overall a really great place for young laid back people. They also have a DJ night on the last saturday of every month which is not to be missed!!! :o)

Been Back again.... and have been truly surprised, something here has changed. The staff were excellent, friendly and fast to serve. The food service is still available but seems to have been toned down in regards to the menu, it is still a little pricey.
The beer selection hasn't changed but were well poured and tasted good. This place also seems to have ousted the chav set and appears to attract a more convivial crowd, which helps the atmosphere enormously.
The toilets were clean and well kept and the whole place seems to have lost its depressive feel.
Not sure what the underlying cause for this change is but it is very welcome.
So a pat on the back for the North Pole keep up the good work I will be using this place more often from now on.

Visited this pub and its sister the Hillgate back in september and didn't intend on going back, but a local friend insisted on having a lunch time pint.
Strangely this place looks better during daylight and the clientele are more office type than the chavs that frequent the place after dark. But it is still an unfriendly place to drink. The whole atmosphere is one of an airport lounge, people are simply passing through. The bar staff are ok and do try but they are on to a loser, no amount of smiling can alleviate the depression that hangs over this place like a fog.
The food is still pricey but that doesn't seem to stop them selling it, however this is probably due to the fact that there is no competition in the area.
My friend does actually use this place alot and thinks its ok but it really could do much much better.
anonymous - 22 Oct 2005 11:55
Oh my god!! Chav city. Food is extortionate and there are groups of blokes hanging around in the toilets??

Just had Sky installed which is a bonus but with all the moronic chavs around a punch is never to far from the surface. Beer is basic and pricey and decor resembles a starbucks coffe shop. All in all not worth a visit.
anonymous - 11 Sep 2005 14:10
Dreadful and completely at odds with the demographic of the area. The decor's alright but stop the poncy gastropub food, sort the cask ales out, cut the prices and do something to cheer the staff up please.

Trust me it'll work.
realalesnob - 15 Jun 2005 16:06
Pretentious, over-priced and with barmen that will only serve you within 20mins if you are a) a woman, and b) fit.

Avoid.

In fact, I'd rather go to the Pavillion down the road with the scariest kitchen staff in the known universe.
N - 3 Nov 2004 17:23
just had a very nice lunch here. The pub bit is often a bit spartan and has a few odd sorts in, and the toilets are fairly dirty, but the food is very good and the service friendly. Sausage and mash is great!
Jim - 30 Sep 2004 16:20
Has an atmosphere as cold and detached as the name would suggest. As all the other comments suggest, it's a bizarre location for a pub like this. If you live or work near it, you've probably been there, and if you don't do so, then you never have a reason to.
travis - 3 Sep 2004 14:28
A strange, trying-to-be-trendy place in a really grim part of London.

Over-priced and following all the dull sections of the gastro-pub template. The staf look permantly dazzled, too.

Ok but not great.
MrScott - 14 May 2004 12:00
Definately the best sausage and mash for miles. The Beer Soaked Haddock and chips looked amazing pleasent staff and a reasonanbly quick servive one of my favourite places in London.
Deedee - 4 Apr 2004 00:29
Very busy on a friday lunch, though the wait was a little, long for food, it was worth it, great wine list, Manager and staff, most helpful, in hurrying our food along, will be back
Rand - 3 Mar 2004 11:25
This is the worst pub I have ever been to. The food took an hour to prepare and my lunch break was over by the time it came because they had made a mistake. The manager expected us to pay for the food because it had been prepared although we justifiably cancelled the order as we had no time to eat it.

We had a nasty argument with the manager who was very abusive. As i have said - the worst pub I have ever been to with the worst customer service.
NB - 30 Jan 2004 14:22
A bit over-trendy, but not too sad a place to drink.
Darryl - 13 Oct 2003 19:45
nice pub... grew up around here probable 1st local
rui - 20 Jun 2003 18:19
Nice if pricey food in the restaurant. Bar snacks are a complete rip off. Staff a bit on the surly side, but probably the best pub in the area
Rufus - 24 Mar 2003 14:38
Old Victorian boozer converted into gastro-pub. Interesting mix of Nottinghill trendies and old codgers.
