A Free House.

Formerly St SAustell house but was sold off by them a couple of years ago.
One room pub refurbished in a modern style with anything of character skipped. On one wall which seemed to take up pretty much all of the wall was a TV with football on playing very loudly. It was spot the bloke without a tattoo on his forehead so turned around and went out.
Didn't see what beers they had on but I suspect that it wouldn't include any real ale.

Decent little pub. I always find pubs with little windows that make it difficult to see into a little intimidating but I took the missus in here anyway. It's small but perfectly presentable and neat and clean. There were a couple of locals at the bar who were friendly enough and I ended up having quite a long chat with one young lad who was keen to know where I came from and I felt quite at ease to give him my camera to take a holiday snap of me and Mrs BB in there.
Interesting to note was whilst the rest of the country went Olympics bonkers they had darts on the telly - I like their style !
Definitely a boozers pub not a pub you go for a meal - I'm not even sure they did food at all and certainly a pub I'd visit again.

Nice little old fashion pub with a cracking pint of ale, that will do for me.

A small pub. A selection of St Austell ales available. Wasn't too impressed with the place - well, that's a bit unfair. Not a fault of the pub. I think it was the other clientele at the time of our visit. It was just after lunch and seemed every benefit cheat and work shy fop was in there spending all their money on booze. Take these people out of the equation and I'm sure it'd be a great place. The T.V. was on - as the previous post commented on - this was distracting. It takes away the social side of a pub. If you want TV, stay at home and watch it.

A 2 minute walk away out of the town centre from The Seven Stars, on which I have just posted, is The Masons Arms, a smallish reasonably traditional inviting looking St Austells pub which advertises itself as an "Ale and Cider House".

The interior is comfortable and carpeted and traditionally furnished with horse brasses on the dark beams creating something of a country pub feel to the place.

On my recent early Sunday evening visit, somewhat incongruously, and out of character with the pub, a TV screen above a splendid inglenook fireplace with exposed brickwork, was showing an unadvertised American football game. The volume was loud and this dominated the pub, but none of the other half dozen or so customers were showing any real interest in the game.

Beers on from the St Austell range were Tinners, Tribute and Proper Job. The latter - 3.05p - was in good nick.

Any pub that is showing an American football game with the sound on at a loudish volume in a smallish pub like this, despite obvious customer indifference, is not going to get a glowing endorsement from yours truly. However, previous reviews here are generally positive, so I might have come in at a bad time. I'll reserve judgement on this one, therefore

Nice pub with friendly landlord. Nearest pub to our B&B so was our last call most nights.

Lovely quiet little pub - wish there were more like this! Good pint of Tribute, or some too-easily drinkable cider!

Visited 22/10/06, Sunday Lunchtime. A slightly smokey atmosphere but not unpleasant. Fairly quiet, but the locals and bar staff were all friendly. A superb pint of Tribute. Went back the following evening, pub busier but great atmosphere and beer good.

I have been drinking in the Masons for almost 10 years and it has pretty much never changed...this is a good thing as there are not many traditional pubs like this left.

Yes, quite often there is no music playing and only 2 people sat at the bar...but other times the place is full and lively with loads of interesting characters to talk to. The point is, most of the customers are regulars but start a conversation with anyone in there and after a while you'll become another regular.

I love the masons best in the winter when you can go in and sit by the fire, read the paper, play some cards and feel like your at home in your own front room! Love it!

They also sell the best cider you've ever tasted. Cloudly, appley and seriously strong.

does Cornish Cream on tap, a quality pint you have to try. Deadpan atmosphere great place for a quiet pint away from the horrors of witherspoons or nearby remedies, recommended.

We found the pub little changed but it could be a bit claustrophobic perhaps. The other customers looked fairly normal to us on our Saturday lunchtime visit and my pint of Tribute was good. The parrot was the most colourful patron we saw!

WOT Happened. Returned 6 months later, HSD was only just acceptable, music was loud and the place filled with a motley crew of what can only be described as senior citizen piss heads who had spent their pension money on cheap cider all day. Not a nice sight. Alternative go to Wodehouse Arms down the road, still music on but staff friendly and food if you want it.

Found this pub on holiday - superb - no sparklers on the beer taps like some other crazy St. Austell places - keep it up

a real pub in a lovely location, fantastic homely welcome- good beer and all the attributes of a familly run boozer that you dont advertise. oh and they are really patriotic so if you want to see a real english pub while there still are a few about-pop in, it wont be your only visit
