user reviews of the Waterfront, Streatham

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Visited Thursday evening. Quite large with wooden tables and seats. Music moving towards decent ska and only slightly intrusive. No real ales on tap and nothing obvious bottled. Both Camden Pale Ale and Camden Hells were off so had a Swiss 1963 biere. An above average selection of lagers. Didn't have any food. Staff friendly and got busier as the evening went on.

Visited on 5 April with two friends and my baby twins. This is one of my local pubs and I thought we would have a good pizza and a chat there.

We got there around 1:30, the pub was empty and the music so loud it was impossible to have a conversation. My friend asked the barman to please turn the volume down but he was very rude and basically ignored her request. I tried asking him a few minutes later and he said 'What? Even more?!' He seemed really bothered by our request, as if we were spoiling his party. What an incredibly rude attitude, not doing the pub a great service, especially as it was empty and I imagine it badly needs customers to keep it going.

Later the delivery guys arrived with beer barrels and more, they made a hell of a lot of noise and kept the door open for ages on a day when it was freezing cold. No apologies for the inconvenience from staff of course!

Overall it was such an unpleasant experience that it put me off visiting again, even if the pizza is great. Such a shame that the staff is so rude.

Pizza's great.
2 for 1 cocktails every day 6pm to 8pm great.

Bar staff the worst in the whole of London. This is no joke they are rude, agressive, unfriendly and ruin this venue.

Definitely give it a miss, until the owners sort this out.

normally an ok venue with good pizza's and an ok selection of beers and wine. I strongly advise you to steer well clear on a friday evening. They have an unbelievably rubbish dorman who is working to his own agenda. Rude and abusive to people he does not know and his mates getaway with murder. If the manager thinks that having staff like that is in anyway helpfull to his business then he must think again. Also the toilets where the most disgusting i have ever seen. Very similar to scene in trainspotting. I will be avoiding this pub like the plague... A real shame for the people behind this pub as it used to be so much better .

Love this place for a day drink or two. They serve fantastic Weston's cider which resembles a cider slush puppy which is great for warm days. Pizzas are good. Roasts are bad. Tried a couple of weekend nights in here and the music was so loud I had to leave. I'm not old, I just like to be able to hear myself, my friends and the barman as I'm ordering, speak.

Having moved to Streatham recently I thought I'd found a diamond in the rought with the Waterfront. But despite tickign a few boxes I have had my opinion of the place spoiled by their door staff. Having witnessed a fight go unchecked with no security in sight on my first visit, we were then subjected to an unwarranted and rude warning to be quiet on the next visit. While having a quiet drink with close friends in a bar playing loud music on a Saturday night. The night was totally spoiled and I still have received no reply to my complaint. I won't be going back, its a shame the two times I have been there have both been marred by the door staff, either in their absence or in their heavy handed, over the top behaviour.

Its a shame as otherwise it had many good points. I just refuse to be harassed by a domineering thug in a bomber jacket.
rosco77 - 14 Aug 2008 17:27
i think this manager has been removed. Normal service resumes.

On Mothers day, I took 2 friends from Leeds to dinner here as I had always had a great night out and good meals before.
I know it was mothering Sunday but we arrived after the rush at around 7pm and ordered our drinks at the bar, 10 mins later ordered our food.
After waiting 30mins I asked a very sweet member of staff where our food was and she checked for us and advised us that it would be 5 mins.
We waited another 20 mins and ordered more drinks and asked again, same response with an apology.
After waiting another 30mins I went to the bar and told the same girl we really weren't happy as people who had arrived after us had had their Pizza's and we were only having Salads. She apologised again and checked in the kitchen, told us they had a backlog due to the lunch time rush yet others after us had had their meals.
After waiting an hour and a half we finally got our food and it was beautiful.
Not happy with the wait but the end result was lovely, the manager on that evening (anthony) came over and offered us complimentary drinks but by this time we were tiered, pretty drunk (waiting) and very bored of waiting so we left.
Normally the Waterfront is brilliant, food great, staff wonderful and music fantastic but this has put me off. Other managers would have been over after 30mins to apologise instead of waiting till we finished eating. Shame!

great bar, great pizzas and now a fab sunday roast loads of veg which is wicked and cooked how i like it, ok so the plates could be hotter but a small complaint really. going to check their comedy night out next month so will post a reveiw.
zeeberdee - 26 Nov 2007 16:06
to the waterfront management;
guys,
you are a pizza-bar, and it is something you do very well.
Every pizza I have had there has been excellent.
So why the sunday roasts? daft idea. bit like watching a rugfby player attempting to tap dance.
the roast was poor; stick to what you know
streathamite - 26 Oct 2007 16:17
Sticky tables, lots of flies and filthy toilets. An excuse for a pub.
ONscotland - 9 Jul 2007 11:22
i like this bar(ITS NOT A PUB) yes it dose get busy on a Friday night but it has a great atmospher and the cocktails are yummy and have caused me quite a few headaches.I really like the pizza's and the salads are good to i think it only has a pizza menu as it is a pizzarea and it also has high chairs for the kids and a non smoking area so me and my girlie friends can go in the weeek for a coffee.
jayne1976 - 29 May 2007 19:06
Dunno about this pub. Way to crowded and waited ages for a drink...dying of thirst & left very soon. just pizza on menu???STRANGE!. Not enough beers considering its pub (whats that about??)WAAAAAy to small. Wont be visiting again thats for sure. !
jappycat - 24 May 2007 21:54
only known for its pizza and smooky pub
selfo - 23 May 2007 00:54
one of the better pubs in streatham, great pizza...
anonymous - 21 May 2007 16:25
A decent enough place for the area but until the smoking ban comes in its suffers from being very, very smokey. I imagine it will be a much better place thereafter.

Decent staff and great pizzas but.... no real beers!!!... only Fosters etc. Oh well.
whiskeydrum - 22 Apr 2007 18:44
Well known for its good pizzas.
seasiderMM - 7 Apr 2007 16:13
Good food (especially the pizzas) although the beer is limited to bottled or larger on tap.

There are cheaper pubs locally but at least you can usually get a seat and not have to fight to get to the bar.
HH64 - 2 Jan 2007 15:51
Have only been here once but enjoyed the nice atmosphere inside. One thing - are all the seats and tables so rickety? Surprisingly annoying!
ONscotland - 29 Oct 2006 17:32
usually something going on, in friendly, chilled out envioronment - food is good as well
RapierC - 6 Sep 2006 13:19
Nice pub, a tad pricey but the beer's not bad.

Good staff, Jim's really sound but Richard could do with supporting a better football team!

Will defo be going back here again.
lukemarson - 31 Aug 2006 19:32
Pubs, bars, cafes; all a bit thin on the ground in Streatham, so this place fits the bill. You can go there and have a coffee on a Sunday PM, a good time on a Saturday night, and a quiet beer on a weekday. The music isn't ear-splittingly loud, and the bouncer's a doorman, not a bouncer, if you catch my drift. Haven't been to their comedy night on the first Wed's of every month yet, but I will. So what if it doesn't have Sky Sports? I love footie, but I like a break sometimes.
anonymous - 9 May 2006 17:15
As the treadbare selection of pubs in Streatham goes this place rates quite highly - not a whiff of trouble in there, mainly due to the rougher element being priced out of the market. Good food - the pizzas are great, the beer isn't watered down and the spirits/cocktails are good - if a little expensive. As below a place to take the girlfriend, not what I'd say about the Greyhound.
youknowyouloveit - 1 Mar 2006 15:25
Have been coming in here on and off for a few years. There are far worse places. Pizzas are delicious but pricey. Good selection of lagers, wine, cocktails etc. More of a bar than a proper boozer. Funny to compare the clientele with The Greyhound over the road. Depends what mood you're in. If you want footie and cheaper beer then head over the road. If you're out with the girlfriend or more discerning mates then try The Waterfront.
thehonesttruth - 27 Feb 2006 23:42
Hmmmm...what used to be a ambient bar for a read of the paper, some great food, cocktails and if you are lucky a jazz trio, left me extremely disappointed yesterday. The service was terrible, unfriendly and god forbid someone shared a smile or a senses of humor. The place lacked atmosphere was cold, dark and looked like it needed a good shake up, staff and toilets included. Real disappointment, has there been a change of ownership???
Poss - 31 Oct 2005 11:24
Seems to take ages to get served by poncy staff - probably because of the (v nice!) cocktails. Good, relaxing boozer, though
Jimmyopolous - 5 Oct 2005 12:31
Excellent pub, nice atmosphere. Not the place to go if you want a quick meal as you can often wait quite a while. But the food is excellent and worth the wait if you have time. Don't think they do real ale...
Dickster - 15 Sep 2005 20:58
Fantastic pub.

Definatley a cool hang out and try the pizzas, they are amazing.

It's nice to see the staff care about the cocktails and it has exhibitions of artwork on the walls that change from time to time.

Agree with previous comments, between this and the Railway Streatham Common has some cool pubs.
dangerboyjim - 3 Aug 2005 13:45
Tremendous Sunday-paper-reading venue. Staff are all charming, pizzas are delicious and a decent-ish selection of beer and wine. Horrendous cabaret singer was a one-off mistake.
johnnym - 28 Apr 2005 08:21
This place get's better and better. They had a blues session there on a cold Thursday in Feb and the place was packed with a great crowd. Safeguard the pizza dough reciepe it's a winner. website needs an update
whitto - 1 Mar 2005 15:04
Great bar/restauarant hidden away from the dangerous Streatham Hill. I especially love the cocktails, the music, and the friendly staff. Along with the Railway, Streatham Common now has the 2 best places in the area.
Frankie - 29 Feb 2004 12:34
Have been to the Waterfront several times since moving to Streatham Common. Food always good-must in particular recommend the brushetta, the best I have tasted in a long while. Atmosphere relaxed always chilled & friendly. Definitely worth a visit if you are in the area.

Lucy - 24 Feb 2004 15:40
The Waterfront is the kind of place you could go to to read your book/paper with a glass of wine from their very extensive list. Two for one cocktails on weeknights are great, because they're normally too expensive. The food is delicious as well.
It's often busy at the weekend, which would be great, although, their lack of decent air conditioning means that your eyes are practically bleeding from the smoke by the time you leave. It used to be the only decent pub/bar down the Streatham Common end of the high road, but now I would always favour the Railway Hotel on Greyhound Lane.
becca - 24 Feb 2004 11:30
Stunning pizza, although not cheap is well worth the money. Really nice atmosphere and decor, very relaxed.
Philippa - 16 Jan 2004 15:07
Fantastic venue for an otherwise poor area for bars, fab pizzas and all reasonable, great music and safe, go there now.....
Chris - 19 Dec 2003 14:14
Great pub. Great atmosphere anytime of day. Friendly manager/bar staff and bouncers. Food, particularly the pizzas, is extremely tasty. Has good (free) music events and customer friendly deals. Even has art on the walls to look at. Completely disagree with Marc's comment - hits the right note style-wise.
Laura - 4 Nov 2003 12:17
Absolutely best Pizza in Streatham, plus other good italian / med bar food. Great atmosphere and always feels safe.
Paul - 17 Oct 2003 16:55
The food will be greatly improved as there is a new chef starting this week, i have tasted his food before and believe me its heaven, go give it a try, Anita Rotherhithe
Anita - 30 Jul 2003 13:10
This is a great place to go for a drink.... yes it is expensive and there are a few cheaper places up the road, but do you get the same services??? Highly recommended. Tanya Streatham-30th July 2003
Tanya - 30 Jul 2003 13:07
Tries to be too trendy by half and fails. The beer is expensive and the food is not much to write home about - the Pied Bull just down the road is a much better bet on both counts.
Marc - 19 Mar 2003 09:05
A touch of relaxation and peace. No water though.
Natasha - 13 Nov 2002 12:59
fantastic jazz on sundays, pizza is the perfect hangover cure, good wines, nice crowd. Just what the doctor ordered!!!
Laura - 13 Nov 2002 12:43
The ONLY place in Streatham worth visiting. A mile away from the derelict & dangerous Streatham Hill area. Streatham Common is where all of the decent people are drinking. Along with the Pied Bull, these are 2 well hidden secrets. Well worth checking out for jazz and a pizza on Sundays.
