A fantastic pub which I have visited several times. Perfect for a pint before seeing a gig at the Academy. Always got plenty of choice of real ale and I have never had a bad pint in here. The pool tables are great for a quiet afternoon drink and right next to the Holy Name Church which is ideal for me and fellow Smiths fans :-)

Popped in here out of the rain for a quick pint after a gig at the Academy. Lovely pub! Nice layout, friendly bouncers. (it reminded my of how the old Firkin pub chain used to be years ago).

Six real ales on when I was there. They seem to rotate often with their guest ales, giving a good choice. Otherwise it's very studenty (if such an adjective exists) but not bad at all.

I was there the first week it opened way back when and the Tim Taylor's was astonishingly good. It didn't take many weeks before you had to switch to lager. Not enough demand for real ales to make them consistent.

Full of knob heads at the weekend during term time but, as mentioned below, it's very relaxed at lunch times and is an excellent place to watch the cricket over the summer.

The main gripe is, why must it be so dark in there? What are they hiding?

Fun place with a nice atmosphere and nice decor, but the drinks are a bit expensive for your average student to come here too regularly unfortunately.

Used to work in the Uni building behind JCs and played many many games of pool here and drank many many many pints. The decor and seating boothes in the main room could do with an upgrade but the beer is cheap and reasonable quality (discounted for Uni staff and loyalty card holders)..sometimes some guest beers are on tap.. otherwise choice is limited. On friday nights the bop upstairs is a laugh despite the sticky floors. Very large screen for sporting events... I like this place despite it's shortcomings.

This pub doesn't look like it's being kept very well. The furniture is knackered and when we went we were bothered by flies. Used to be a great pub, I hope it returns to its former glory soon.

Not been in the evening for a couple of years, but go in the daytime a fair bit. Far quieter than it's location suggests it should be in the daytime. The food is damn good, and pretty reasonable. (shows up the more popular Kro bar in both respects). The staff are always helpful.

it has to be said that I love Jabez, I've rarely had a bad night in there. Cheesy tunes, and its cheap, bit you've got to keep a watchful eye out for those letchy drunken men!

nice spacious dance floors but , although this may sound strange by the end of the night the floor is slippy and very annoying

Jabez clegg

The bar downstairs its actually quite nice they have 2 pool tables and 2 quiz machines and a pinball machine!

Large screen for any sports!!

Cocktail pitchers for 9!!!! :-)

Leather sofas and wooden benches and tables.

The toilets let it down though! They need a good bleach they are gross!

The Bop!!!
Friday and Saturday nights are really good if your into cheap alcohol (double vodka and coke 2.50!!!!) and dont mind having a plastic cup!!!! On a Friday girls drink free till half ten!!! J

They play cheesy music in the main room which ranges from 70s 80s 90s and pop music of the oos (basically anything from Queens Were having a good time to S Club 7! Reach!)

In the smaller room they play RnB, Hip-hop and Dance music! You can hear some classics in this room too!

The toilets are...well not the best in fact they are pretty gross and could do with a good bleach but if your desperate they will do and there are plenty! I suggest you take tissues with you cos they often run out!

The people in there are all out for the same thing and to get drunk have a laugh!!

They range in age groups (im 18 and one of my friends is 27) but you often find it can be between 17-45!!!

Plenty of students so if youre a student hater then this place isnt for you!

You can wear what you want and no body cares including trainers! So if your feet hurt from stilettos or you cant really be bothered!

Now been going to Jabez far too much that im being recognised by door staff!!! How embarrassing. The young doorman is called Ryan and is 23 still looking good!!! J
We always seem to attract new friends on our nights in there, which is funny; we have some great photos of our nights in there! We keep meeting people we havent seen for ages too which has turned out to be pretty good ;-) However our drunken escapades are renowned now so were trying not to go!!! But the problem is tat we know we can have a great night there, be idiots, get drunk and wear what we want without worrying whos looking in comparison to other places PLUS we love the music! So we are going to try (Branningans) this weekend even tho we have heard its full of scallies! We sometimes go to walkabout too thats ok (see we go to all the classy places!!! J he he he) ANYWAY if youre a regular like us you will have seen us! Well you cant miss us usually we end up finding oversized glasses and running round wearing them and hitting people with wands!!! J He he he sorry! We have had birthdays and Hen parties in there too!

Amy - 17 Mar 2004 13:07
generally ok and have had a few good nights out here during my student days, but turns into a meat market on bop night, so not great unless you want to be groped by strange men!

You haven't lived unless you've been Jabezed!. If your criteria is late license, cheap beer, cheesy music, and floors your feet get stuck to (or body depending on your ability to maintain your balance!) this is the place for you. Always a top night out.
Mazz - 30 Jul 2003 15:45
Absolutely fab! Houses some of the craziest staff in the universe!
Monkey - 22 Apr 2003 19:25
I`ve been going here since I started uni in 1993. Fantastic! The best disco and pub in Manchester. No funny admission criteria. ALWAYS A GOOD NIGHT!

This place has good points and bad points. Without doubt the music is brilliant. It's great to hear the cheesy classics now and again. However it can get very busy on Saturday nights and you're almost certain to get a drink spilt around you so don't wear your best threads to go there. Also there have been a few times when people have tried to start fights I have noticed so I must conclude that although the venue itself is fine, it does seem to attract the wrong crowd sometimes (to say the very least).

happening place with fine men great for students and dudes after some
izzol - 16 Oct 2002 20:25
Huge and cheap, and therefore constantly filled with students. With KroBar around the corner though, I can't think of a decent reason to go here.
