Popped in for a quiet pint about 15.30 yesterday, girl serving was pleasant and the beer was nice and cold, what more can you ask. All good

Last visit was typical - All the guest ales off (that's supposedly 8) but the ruddles was on and the freezing cold gk ipa (which Senior Management ordered trying to be her usual wonderfully supportive & helpful self)

Service is rubbish as the staff just seem to get ground down - unless you're lucky enough to get any of the great guys (that includes the brilliant skipping, happy, blondey) that seem to get imported / seconded from the Jean Jaques (they are really easy to spot .... They know what they are doing, they smile, they engage in banter etc)

This place is a total dump and should be avoided at all costs

As we used to say in my old rugby club NRF (No Redeeming Features)

Apparently, the old White Swan nearby is being refurbed and is due to open soon - travel in hope I say!!

Hic! Hic!

Doh! Target time of 30 minutes.

An edit or delete and replace function would be most useful!

Very large building converted into a single hall. Very, very busy on our visit after the Great South Run, but our party of six plus child managed to find a table. One of the advantages of a large Wetherspoon is that even in busy periods a table can usually be found. Our order of meals and drinks for everyone came to under 30; we were served quickly (which surprised us), and the food was delivered within 20 minutes which was well within the target time of 20 minutes. While not the most inspiring of interiors, there was nothing wrong with the service, the food, the drinks, nor the surroundings. Everything was clean and tidy and in its place. Having said that, I prefer the smaller Wetherspoon just down the street.

Huge 'spoons. Called in on Tuesday afternoon.place was fairly busy but we were served promptly. First choice of beer had just run out but were suggested a similar alternative.
Beer was fine.

Had a beer and burger deal for 3.99, burger was cold, sent it back, problem dealt with straight away, whole meal replaced. Pint of Ruddles Best fine. Golden rule with any Wetherspoons pub - if you're not satisfied, complain immediately and they'll do what they can to resolve complaint as they're concerned with maintaining a good reputation !

To be fair ale is rarely on best condition, but always drinkable. Weths do give value for money but this old Gas HQ is too big to feel like a pub, more like a german beer hall and I am getting to old to keep walking up the flight of stairs for a leek!
odbod - 25 Aug 2010 15:16
Standard Wetherspoons - good cheap beer being the only reason to visit.

My first ever visit to this pub with a friend and some of his work colleagues for a jar or 2 took place early 1 Friday evening a few weeks ago. Surprisingly for a city-centre Wetherspoons at that time of the day and week, the atmosphere seemed remarkably civilised with no evidence of excessive drunkeness among the clientele, although things might well have taken a turn for the worse later on after we had left. However, the bar service was absolutely diabolical we sent out a search party for 1 of our group who had to wait nearly half an hour to get served!

Some ale choices were left over from the recent beer festival and were in cracking condition. A Wetherspoon that seldom disappoints. We had some fun early on Saturday evening, sitting by the window and watching some of the local slappers walking across the square. What do they think they look like?
GazzaTheBeerMan - 10 May 2010 12:16
A pint of Ringwood Old Thumper was tasty and refreshing.
The breakfast was less so, as they still do not seem to understand the meaning of, "eggs well done"!

Nothing remarkable about this Wetherspoons midday Friday

Very busy at the bar Sat (21:00), but battled through the youngsters to find a decent beer on tap (cant remember what now) and, beyond the bar, the relative tranquility of a seating area which may be restaurant during the day. Friends whod been checking the last trains back to London had witnessed dickheads getting off at Portsmouth&Southsea & smashing bottles at the station; you have to imagine spoons being a prime destination for suchlike but, although this was busy, I didnt detect any overt hostility.

I have fond memories of this pub, used to come in here all hours of the day when I was a student...on both sides of age 18 he he...

Staff at this pub just get worse! Is it wetherspoons mission to teach their staff how to be the most lazy, arrogant & uninformed people in the business?
shim - 21 Aug 2007 14:37
Good service, last Sunday, unlike on a previous visit.
A pint of "Thirsty Moon" bitter from Phoenix Brewery was refreshing and sufficiently 'bitter'.
jbsjazzer - 3 Aug 2007 10:01
This pub has its ups and downs. Sometime the guest beers are sadly lacking, as is the level of service. Gets very busy with students during term time often asking for coffee, while regulars are kept waiting for the beer!

Could do with a bit of refurb. especially the loos (at least the Gents, that is!)
peajcea - 9 Jan 2007 02:39
Last Friday lunchtime - no beer whatsoever and their lack of it seems to be a regular occurrence.
Splodge68 - 14 Nov 2006 19:56
Very large pub with a good selection of real ales usually on. Handy for the main line station.
wyndham - 22 Sep 2006 18:45
Average choice of beer last week - only the usual 'big brands' and no guests.
Islander - 16 Sep 2006 10:28
Went in for a late breakfast on Sunday last.
I requested that my eggs were "well done", but they came as runny as those on every other breakfast being served!
Plenty of choice of beers, but they must have had a good Saturday trade, as the two best choices were unavailable.
I had a pint of 'Spitfire' which was refreshing.

Big, busy and cheap.
Exactly what is says on the tin, but always plenty of staff.
Good location, selection of beers.
Fine.

southernbeer - 31 Jul 2006 13:26
Although this is just another very large open plan pub by one of the major pub chains, it has one of the best selections of real ale I have ever come across. On my last visit I counted 13 different cask ales!
dixont - 17 Feb 2006 14:31
Great prices, ale and lager selection and good food. Its not just another 'Spoons its actually a fine place to go for food and a good drink, just dont expect a quiet sit down after work or if there is a student night about to kick off.
tomoliver - 1 Feb 2006 09:11
Always has a super range of beer on, although sometimes I think it's too big for their own good - some of the less popular ones seem to turn quite badly in there. Having said that, the staff have always been happy to swap a dodgy pint so it is no problem really.

The food in there has always been good.

Worst thing about it is the huge trek upstairs to the loos if you're at the back of the pub - newcomers with weak bladders beware!

A lovely venue on the way int uni which is hard to resist, on stressful days
