Pub now called "UNION GAP".best pub i have been to in ages.First class service. Manageress Jayne, really nice lady,Phill barman, could not do enough to help.A little bit dearer than your normal pub,but the sort of place you would take a friend to,to impress.Food looks so nice.

went in last night. What a pigs ear of a pub. No ale (GK IPA or Deuchars both off) so I eventually decided on a pint of Heineken. It was flat and cloudy. My colleague who ordered the round was then charged 8 for 2 pints of said beer even though he clearly ordered just the 1! The music was too loud, the service was shoddy and 3 drinks cost nearly 15 quid...won't be returning. We used to frequent this place quite often but not anymore.

To be honest, it turned out to be better than I expected, having read the reviews. But it's a complete con historically. Not only is it not the original pub, but someone should tell them the Blue Anchor connected with Jack The Ripper was in Royal Mint Street E1, not Rolls Passage (or Chancery Lane) ! Their blurb on the tables claims two of his victims spent their last evening there. Not true.

Wrong on all levels Un-interested rude staff lacks atmosphere & seems to think its better than it is. Was reccomended this place by a mate but not the warm friendly feel he said it had. Mind you he said there was a change in management in the last few years after he left the area which is probably why. Shame really

When I used the Blue Anchor in the late 60s/early 70s it was a Youngers pub in Chancery Lane. The site has been redeveloped and a new pub called the Blue Anchor included.
I don't know exactly when this was done but the current pub is now more than 40 years old despite it's "Est. 1749" claim.

Probably. A William Hammond was the landlord of the Blue Anchor at 35 Chancery Lane in 1839. Pigots lists 22 Blue Anchor pubs in the area as far afield as Limehousr and Borough.

Hi,
Does anyone know if this pub is the same one from 1856?
Were there many pubs called Blue Anchor?

Cheers,
Di

Not many pubs with this great continental style table service. Food is getting progressively better, mixed party of 11 all different meals and no complaints! I feel it is good value and has a great atmosphere.

I love this pub. I'm an out of towner -- well way out of town being NYC -- but this is one of my favorite London pubs. Good food (and better now since the reopening) and really great atmosphere--cute guys, too!

I wandered down to the cellar bar which had some jazz music playing and unbeknown to me it was closed, but the friendly maid still stopped what she was doing to serve me and then give me directions to the street level bar up the stairs. This was a shame as this bar wasnt as nice and many of the tables were reserved meaning that I ended up standing in the alley outside with my pint resting on a pillar.

Bombardier and Greene King IPA were both available and there was another unused pump and a standard draught selection.

There are better pubs in the area so I dont think that Ill be drinking here again.

Visited the Bluey after is relaunch. As with all other previous occasions the food was below acceptable standards, my chicken caesar salad was a greasy, tasteless affair at 7.95 and the cheesy nachos came with a sprinkling of cheese and the bowl of chilli arrived x minutes later. The pub has expanded its menu to include various fish offerings which is good if you like fish. Only 2 of the x items on the dessert menu were available and service at the bar was slow...5mins to settle a lunch bill. Overall the pub continues to disappoint customers with the food - i work in the building that adjoins the pub and the food was good in 2006/07 but now its rubbish, i don't waste my money in there after work and I wouldn't recommend it to others.

It is not often you get good news about pubs these days. These days it is usually something like they have closed or become a restaurant with what is left of the bar being little more than a waiting area. Anyway I have just had my second phone call in 24 hours to say a pub has reopened. Nearly four months after it was closed by a fire the Blue Anchor has risen Phoenix like from the ashes. Another friend apparently spotted this last Friday as he was walking down Chancery Lane. He did not visit as the board says Karaoke Night on Fridays and did not appeal at all. Not much I can comment on apart from letting you know it has reopened. Obviously the interior will have been redone as when I glanced in back in May it was a soggy sooty mess. Have any of my fellow beerintheevening brothers visited?

It is a couple of years since I last visited this pub. On that occasion we had an enjoyable meal but found the pub rather too crowded and noisy. We returned yesterday evening as the barbecue had been recommended to us. Unfortunately no barbecue as the pub is shut as the result of a fire. Hopefully is just a co-incidence that Breams Buildings at the other end of Rolls Passage was gutted by fire about two months ago.

According to the pavement sign in Chancery Lane there is a minibus linking Chancery Lane and their sister pub, the City Pride, between 12:00 and 14:00 and again 17:00 to 19:00 I was an hour to late. I assume this is the pub in Clerkenwell?

I have based my points on my previous visit as I get the impression there have been no major changes.

Pretty uninteresting selection of beer. They have a BBQ during the summer which is nice, other than that a pretty nondescript uninteresting place, there are better ones nearby.

sweet little pub! if more people knew about it you would never find a seat!

great staff too which can be rare!

Nice enough little pub tucked away down an alleyway off Chancery Lane. Nothing unusual in the way of ales, but the London Pride was OK. Fairly small but made larger by the front of the pub opening up and the utilization of some outside seating. Must have been a simple backstreet boozer at some stage, but now moved a bit upmarket, which is not surprising in this part of the world. Nevertheless a decent enough little pub. There are a lot worse places to stop for a drink.

I rather like this place, I must admit. Obscurely located down a passageway off Chancery Lane it has a small upstairs bar with outside seating and a larger downstairs bar which is often used for functions etc. The food always smells good although it's probably five years since I've eaten here. A few real ales on tap: nothing exciting and not brilliantly served last time I was here. But it's refreshingly different to the city norm and something of a break from the bustle of EC4. A nice place to come and peruse the paper in one's lunch hour.

Karioke (sp?) has started on Friday evenings. Good for a giggle.
lynnetom20042003 - 12 Mar 2006 15:22
It has to be said that you very rarely come across decent boozers this day and age. Once what were decent pubs have been swallowed up and regurgitated as Weatherspoons or tacky Sam Smith pubs. However at last I have found a gem! A friendly, clean and inviting pub serving an excellent range of real ales, and superb food to boot. I believe The Anchor has also been awarded best food pub which I can fully understand. Anyway a big must to anybody in the area, and keep up the good work!

I work next door to the Blue Anchor, and it used to be a regular friday lunchtime haunt for us. The food was good, if unremarkable, they had a small selection of well-kept ales, and the staff were friendly. Then they changed management, stopped doing lunchtime table service, the beer turned sour (quite literally), and we started going elsewhere.

However, in the last couple of months, it seems to have picked itself up a little. At least, the beer is drinkable again.

Excellent pub, best in the area. Staff always friendly. Gets very busy at lunch.
Paula - 23 Jul 2004 12:13
Lovely pub and lovely food. Shame there's not more space to sit outside for lunch in the summer - you have to race down there at 11:55 to get a table!!!

Cosy, food occassionally disappointing! (cheap and cheerful - fish in a basket etc!)

A fantastic pub tucked down rolls passage off Chancery Lane. Excellent lunchtime menu, friendly staff and well kept ales . Was very impressed with the rugby memrabilia in the top bar. A fantastic pub to while away the hours. Gets very popular on thursday and Friday evenings. Definately worth a visit.
