No atmosphere poor beer, bad service from a bar steward who could hardly speak English.

I have to agree with the previous posters on here this pub is seriously lacking in atmosphere ! Which is a shame because there is nothing much wrong with it otherwise. The olde world half timbered exterior certainly looks inviting enough.

We only went in because we wanted lunch, and we saw it said meals served daily. But there were no menus at all anywhere, until on request, the miserable barman / landlord produced one from behind the bar. I had scampi and mum had fish and chips, and they were both entirely reasonable.

We were in the lounge, and the only real ale there was Tatton Gold (there may have been others in the other bar), which took some time to settle, but was very good once it had done so.

The parrot was pretty miserable too !

5/10 injection of charisma needed

Used to have some good bar staff in there, Shame there isn't now. The bar looks like it could do with a clean. Not busy in the day but good place to watch the match.

Landlord and landlady need to stop looking so miserable. If they actually made people feel welcome I'm sure the place would be busier. Apart from them it's a decent boozer and the beer is fine!

Arrogant staff, iffy beer and what have they done to what should be a beautiful 17th Century pub?

Always mnake sure you pop in, just after the red scum from Merseyside have lost. Great fun to see grown men crying into their beers glasses. You'll hear the sentence 'next year will be our year' most days!

no local scum in evidence on my last visit, just tourists and a wedding party all very nice

Ordered two pints of Fosters - both of which tasted completely different. Complained at the bar, and the landlord had the cheek to say I ordered different beers. Not a pleasent pub.

A good example of how to screw up an old historic pub. The sign on the outside says Ano-domini 1634, but the inside has been messed about so much it could be from anywhere between the mid 7os to 90s. Only sells tetlys real ale, which is not that good. Only good thing about the pub is the chance to drink outside on the cobbles.
