I was in quite recently and yes the jazz in the early evening is a bit naff, but the DJ who came on after was pretty good and wasn't too loud or intrusive.

Yes, it's a local's bar but you could just as easily find yourself a nice place at the bar or in one of the many corners out of the way and not be bothered, as join in for a chat with some exceptionally friendly regulars.

There really isn't that much choice on draught - but the prices are pretty reasonable and I found the staff to be perfectly pleasant and attentive - if in their own quirky ways.

Certainly, it's definitely trying to be cool almost as hard as some of the locals, but it's not trying too hard and has a sense of humour about itself.

That said, It's not really my kind of place, but an independent and idiosyncratic genuine local's bar is a rare thing these days and I can see why people like it.

Give it a go, you might surprise yourself.

i would be inclined to disagree with any naysayers regarding Biddle Bros.
when you catch the bar on a good night, you'll have a pleasant evening of entertainment and banter with complete stangers. it's cosy when it's cold outside and the barstaff have their own personalities which match or grate depending on you're own social compatability. it's a real allsorts kinda place and i'm occasionly found drinking there because i feel very much at home. it's a drinkers' bar who like a good chat!

Mediocre little bar, a bit pretentious and a bit seedy, but not in a good way.

I don't really like Biddle Bros. It has Becks which I do like, but the guy behind the bar is a bit miserable, and insists on playing bad jazz cds which are depressing. And the seats are uncomfortable. And it's often full of the worst type of Hackney people, people who don't go to pubs and have unchangeable opinions and express them loudly. I used to get annoyed when a bit scary wasted people used to stumble in and start advising me on my chess game, but now they don't even cross the threshhold any more, it was better when they did. You can smoke in the yard out the back but it's not great.

Superb bar; good music most nights, stays open later than most.

As outlined, the Murder Mile stuff mostly bit the dust after 'Chimes' nightclub did.

It's not a pub - it's a bar, and one problem is that it has no decent bitter. Otherwise it is very pleasant, very post modern, sofas old transistor radios etc - they have kept the original shop front and added an architectural bit at the back - skylights etc but all very retro, art school. Friendly people there, not at all white when we were there but definitely trendy.

Bar man hugely overdid the gin in my gin and tonic - which can't be bad.

Definitely an asset to E5 - don't worry about murder mile that was mostly up the road by the Lea Bridge Roundabout and was about assassinating people in traffic jams, this end quite safe from my experience.

Pub is absolutely brilliant for having a nice time accompanied with a great music and exotic interior. Its a place for meeting interesting people, having a nice drink and leaving it with a big smile on your face. Staff of the bar as well as owners are welcoming and cheerful people. So all you have left to do is go there and see it with your own eyes :))
Cheers.

well, i dare say things have changed a bit. i went there recently, and it was a very mixed crowd, not at all mostly white. it felt very diverse and very welcoming, totally appropriate for the area of hackney. lovely, friendly staff - would recommend it to anyone.

Great local bar and quite a surprise for "murder mile". Curiously, it is almost entirely white, without having to have a black guy on the door to turn away other black guys. Very odd.

First came across Biddle Bros when cam back from my honeymoon in August 2004. We live in Clapton and were very pleased at the prospect of a bar in the area seeing as we didn't have a local to go to that hadn't had stabbings, shootings and fighting in. It is a good bar with friendly staff but not a very mixed crowd- mainly caters for the white folk of Hackney which is a bit disconcerting given the multi-culture of the area.

Recently opened small stylish piano bar, friendly staff, cheap booze, table football. Unlike anything else in the area. Well worth a visit.
