I love this pub. so many great walks in the surrounding area. great range of ales - up to 7 pumps in use. they even do a beer bat where you can try 3 thirds for £3.45. Ulverston Flying Elephants was our pick! Good food too. Many meals available for £10 which is a lot cheaper than others in the area.

For me though, the best bit is the real fire. Heaven sent when it's freezing outside!!

Several beers to choose from - three Jennings plus four others of which I tried Kirby Lonsdale Stanley's and Hawkshead Bitter. Both were in reasonable condition, but I found it a bit strange that all four of the guest beers were 3.7% or 3.8% in strength - you would expect more variety. Food was ok but nothing special. Staff were friendly and service was good. It filled up quickly on the Friday night that we were there and you need to get there early to get a table if you are eating

Tourist trap pub but good beer.

My favourite pub of this year's trip to the Lake District. Very good beer, food and service. Car park is too small though!

What agreat pub! Beer and food are fantastic. Yes it can get busy but it is worth waiting for a table and expect someone else to move in as soon as you leave.
Tina, Gary and the rest of the staff are friendly and welcoming. Everyone is very efficient, polite and helpful.

Miserable staff, por service, even when not busy. Food average on a good day (at best). Decent range of beers but pub is badly let down by management and bar staff. Unfortunately there is not much choice round here but the Britannia has a much better atmosphere - which is why it's always packed. Avoid Wainwrights if possible.

Top beer, but really busy - difficult to get a seat at peak times - and the food is unimpressive

A great pub for a pint and food after a long day's walk. Lots of ales to choose from and all well-served. The food is of good quality and good portions. Would recommend getting there early during peak times as it can get rammed - even in off-season periods.

Terrible service!

They mixed our food order up and then blamed us for it, no apology when they realised it was their mistake.

This used to be a nice pub with lovely food. Not any more. Three of us left most of our food as it was sub standard and to put a final nail in the coffin they were charging extortionate amounts for the beer too.

We won't be going there again, The Sticklebarn Tavern up the road does marginally better food and the beer is cheeper too - no competition.

This pub has always been great, we have been going for the last 15+ years and never had a problem until now! We arrived wanting to have a meal, all the tables were full so we sat in the private garden down the steps (This was agreed this with the bar man). When we went to order food they had stopped serving for 15-30 minutes as they had no staff, Im not sure why they couldnt take the order and let us know it would be delayed? When we finally got to the till to order we were told that we couldnt have the food there, an argument and a few snide comments later they agreed... We took our plates back inside as a gesture of goodwill as they were in the garden. The manager only muttered to her colleague that the place was like a car park as we were in the way in doing so... Not sure they now have any idea here of customer service and is very expensive for the limited choice of menu. I will not be eating here again, I will walk down to the Britannia Inn Elterwater.

Extremely disappointing!!! The pub is located in such a beautiful scenic area it is a great shame I had such a bad experience at the pub, to the point I will NOT be returning.

At the weekend the sunny weather must have brought many people out, therefore the pub was very busy; however this should not excuse the poor quality of service and attitude from staff, especially waiting on staff. Firstly I had to queue for 15 minutes to get a drink where other customers who came after me were served first, secondly (when you have eventually decided what you would like to order for your food) you then need to go and stand in another 15 minute queue at the bar to place your order and to find out they have run out of the food you asked for. Then when you have chosen something different and ask for chips instead of garlic bread no they can not do this..garlic bread wasnt even allowed to be brought out as a starter because it isnt a starter!!!! So we ordered chips as well, but a member of staff had charged us for 1 too many portions therefore we asked if she could do a refund and she didnt know how so she pointed us in direction of another person who said she would do it when finished our meal.. Eventually it got done. Food was disappointing as well, particularly for the price of the meals, expensive for what it is! Finally last orders were called at 11pm and the a lady came around shouting at us to get out at 11.15 telling us to go and banging chairs and telling us we can have plastic cups to take our drinks! She had a disgusting attitude and was obviously stressed with he busy shift. We complained about the bad service and she told us never to come back which we wont!!! I do not believe that is the way to treat customers especially tourists, I have never felt so unwelcomed. I would also not expect this from a pub that has been placed in The Best Pub Guide for 2009, they really do not deserve it. It is obviously the location that helps this pub to succeed, nothing else..

This pub is in a beautiful location and very cosy inside. I have eaten here on many occasions however we had a terrible evening this saturday. The pub was packed due to the good weather and they were unable to cope with the increase of people. Food dishes were running out and being taken off the menu. It was a 15 min queue to order food. We were literally shouted out and thrown out of the pub at 11.20 when we hadn't finished our drinks. The staff were obviously very stressed out from the busy night. When we made a complaint about the food and the service we were told to not bother coming back! The staff and their attitudes really let the place down. I've never been spoken to like that before. Not the standard I expect from a pub that's featured in The Best Pub Guide 2009. Tourists are not made feel welcome - cheer up in there!

I think they had 8 ales on, most of them interesting. Great pub with good views around the Langdale valley. Ambleside bus stops here at Chapel Stile, spend an hour here before the next one turns up.

a great pub. Food excellent, good beers, and a friendly atmosphere. Got totally wasted here in Sept.

The staff were a bit miserable in here so we assumed it was a Wainwright theme pub at first! The beer was fine though and the pub is pleasant inside.

I agree with the general tenor of the previous comments. This pub was pretty much built from scratch in the 1980s, replacing a smaller hotel bar, and is part of the Langdale complex. For that reason it is a family eating sort of place not a place to escape from children and isnt very atmospheric. But on the other hand, the dcor is perfectly pleasant with a real fire and there are 6 real beers (on New Years Day: three Thwaites, two Barngates and a Derwent Brewery beer). A casual glance at previous pump clips suggested a commendable local bias.

Went there twice in one week in August 2006. It was heaving with customers and a queue for food about 10 people long. However, it was served within 10 minutes. There is a full range of Jennings beers and three guest ales. It is much welcomed after a long climb up the fells. It is close by a camping site and a time-share where many of the customers walk to but is well away from the busy town of Ambleside.

Despite the cheesy name (not sure what it was called before A.W. was around), this pub is an OK stopping off point and makes a reasonable substitute if the Brittannia is bombed out down the road. Whilst not being as "Quaint" as its nearby rival, the food's OK, the beer's good, and the view from the beer garden is really impressive.

Remember getting hazy on the Sneck Lifter here after a very wet local walk. A great memory of a decent pub

This pub is great. Service is fanstastic, as it should be given the investment behind it, good beerm great atmosphere, staggering views, open fires, low ceilings....just everthing.
Would be a great pub to get snowed in at.
