user reviews of Charlton Inn, Charlton Marshall

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

I'm not sure if this has changed hands since the last review, but if it hasn't, they have cleaned up their act considerably. Popped in for a business lunch, and had a pretty perfect experience - great coffee, lovely baguette served rapidly, and top notch service. Can't speak to the beer despite the website as I was driving but the old boys next to me did not shirk in piling through three pints of ale in the time I was there and I'll take their demonstration as it being as good as the food. Recommended, especially for drivers on the way through as it has a cracking car park and speedy turnaround on the light food. Nice, homely building too.

My Husband & I went to this pub for a meal this weekend . We both ordered the sunday roast of which we were told was either Lamb or Pork, so we ordered the lamb at 7.95each. The young lad who brought our meal out first of all forgot that we needed cutlery to eat with & then proceeded to bring out our roast dinner ,this consisted of four lamb chops stood together with three hard roasted potatoes & no veg ,when I asked about the veg he said he didn't know but would ask, he then brought us a small dish with possibly one & half carrots sliced & two spoonfuls of very watery broccoli very appetising I don't think. I then had a sticky toffee pudding sweet which was more like a shop bought cake & was only just warm.Altogether it was not a meal I would wish to have again in a hurry.
Even worse than that was that when my husband went to pay for this meal he was charged 14.95 per meal ,when he queried it they said we had had Rack of Lamb , when he refused to pay & stated that we had asked for sunday roast lamb they did at least change it to 7.95 each. Surely if this was Rack of Lamb (even at their own fault) it was very very expensive for the poor quality & amount of food served. I was very disgusted & will not go to this pub for a meal again even though it should be my local.

badger beer was ok,but the staff need to smile,or get a personality.

Rooms adequate but in need of redecorating and refurbishing. Being small they would benefit by being decorated with light colours.

Service excellent both from staff and the woman who looked too young to be the landlady! There was real warmth to their welcome.

The food I had in the bar was very good but a little too fancy for the pub. It would not have been out of place in a restaurant: however I was in a pub and would have been happier with "real pub" food.

The extensive burger menu was what I should have had but only saw the offer on the black board after I had eaten!

However, the breakfast: this was just magnificent. The choice was wide and varied, with the breakfast I chose being presented and tasting better than I have been served in five star establishments.

Next time I visit I shall have some of other choices on offer particularly the fish. I was surprised to see locals do not use the pub for breakfast more as it is open to the public for breakfast.

The ale was good but I particularly liked the extra cold larger, which was a brand I had never heard of but tasted authentically German.

I travel down to dorset once a month on business. Not being able to stay in my usuall hotel I came across The Charlton Inn.... and boy am I glad I did! What a treat. With a warm welcome I was shown to my room, country, homley feel with top notch cleanliness. I enjoyed a pint of local Badger Beer before dinner, crisp and not to heavy. But the menu! Wow! Choices of really exciting dishes. Traditional pub food to complex fine dining dishes. I tried a different dish each one of my four nights stay, all were greatly recived and resturant standard! This could rival alot of my favorite places at home in London. Breakfast menu exstencive and again superb. I want to congratulate this young couple on what they are doing, haed working and nothing is too much trouble. They have put this place on the map for Hall and Woodhouse and Dorset. Will definatley be staying again and hope to bring the family down near Christmas. Well, well worth a visit!

Last year, 2008 The Charlton Inn was in terminal decline, the couple running it were leaving in the December. Then in late December Gemma and Jaimie took over and have returned the pub to being a successful and busy (despite recession) local. Most nights there is a good regular local trade and because the food is of a very high standard with an excellent menu (breakfast also) There are plenty of diners too. Thanks you two keep up the good work.

We have had a few Sunday carverys since the new people came in. I don't know anywhere else nearby that does one, but I like it here anyway!

Have just come home from an incredible Valentine's evening at the Charlton Inn. Words cannot do justice to the meal my wife and I have just had. The chef is clearly passionate about food and cares deeply about the quality of produce and the attention to preparing it. Scallops, Chateaubriand - both really stunning, and easily worth double what I paid tonight! Front of house are also very friendly and willing. Definitely worth a visit (but not when I want a table again!)

This has been my local for drinking for over ten years, and I have just started eating here. Jamie and Gemma took over the pub early in 2009 and have made unbelievable changes to the food. Many known them from the Black Horse, where people would travel for miles to eat. Now feel very lucky to be able to have such a great pub as my local.

We have just taken over this pub! (We now run two) Appalled by previous comments, the time for change is now.

I can only re iterate what others have said about this pub. The management and staff are not only clueless but don't actually seem interested in their jobs and/or business.
I cant imagine that this place will remain as a pub for long. Expect changes soon.

I can't imagine Hall and Woodhouse are proud of this one! I witnessed an older chap being told it was too late for a bit to eat as they stop serving at 9pm - it was 3 mins past according to the pub clock! And the chap was staying the night in the B&B, and travelled a long way! He wasn't missing much as the food is fairly poor quality, as is the service and the manners of the staff. Will probebly be flats in the not so distant future. Shame as it used to be an ok pub!

New owners in June? I went there last Saturday at 1.50pm on a nice sunny day. The garden and the pub were devoid of customers. There was a sign outside offering the tenancy for sale.

It is well known that tenants are taken for a ride these days and that may be the case here. The po faced barstaff were singularly uninterested in any event. We asked if we could order sandwiches and the reply was "if you're quick." What is it with pubs, food and an obsession with two o'clock? It's 2008 for Christ's sake. It was no surprise when at 2.02pm a man came in, asked for the same and was refused. The fact that he had 3 companions outside meant they were turning away good custom all for the sake of making a few sandwiches.

No wonder pubs are going to the wall.

thought we would give this a try again since it has new owners, service was a bit poor at the bar we was going to have some food but was put off by some woman dressed in chefs gear behind the bar picking her nose.this was our third trip to the charlton, this was not third time lucky for us.

Stopped in here for a spot of lunch.
The bar staff were all playing darts and the place was empty (hardly surprising).
Not wanting to disrupt their leisure activities by actually ordering some food, I prefered to leave them with their darts and walked out.

The Curry Night on a Tuesday is not to be missed the curries are to die for .Also the pub is very family friendly the landlord and landlady love kids about the pub . The landlady even held my newborn baby while my wife and I sat down to eat. Now thats service at a premium .

Highly recommended. A very friendly place, and accommodation is comfortable, clean & reasonably priced. Food is excellent, and the number of locals that eat & drink there is recommendation in itself. Look forward to visiting again soon.
