please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Not a pub I'd particularly want to go back to. Only two hand pumps, one with clip turned round, the other had the ubiquitous Doom Bar but there were plenty of pressurised lagers on offer. Seating in the bar consists mainly of low stools round low tables or high stools round high tables. Separate conservatory extension for meals which on this grey, December day was even gloomier as sun blinds partially closed over windows and roof.
Having said that, on the plus side, the meals on the menu were reasonably priced and my pan fried salmon with veg followed by apple pie all tasted fine and same for the cod and chips my wife had.
Shame about general décor and seating but judging by the number of TV screens around this pub is geared for the sports viewing crowd needing the floor space.

Classic pub with good foor and beer.

Unfortunate that a place which looks like a traditional old fashioned pub, hasn't got a single real ale on hand pull. (Whereas the Royal George, that looks so 20th century and featureless from the outside, has.) I go to pubs for the beer so this one's no use to me.

Decent enough pub, better than the Watermans but not as good as the Bricklayers. It seems to have inherited the customers from the Old House at Home since it was closed down,.

Strangely they are also happy to show live premier league footy at 3pm on a Saturday - surely this is illegal?
roobarb - 31 Dec 2010 14:33
No hand pull beer as has been mentioned below, one bottled ale only. Lots of live football on many screens, occasional live music. Apart from that not really recommended.

deano100 - 15 Jan 2010 22:24
Not bad at all really, quite pleasently surprised. Decent pint of Pride and footie on the TV :-)

Well Done Stuart, Spend the money wisely.... will the chef be next?

I love this place. The Sunday roasts are fantastic and good value for a family eat-out. Large seating restaurant area which tends to leave fewer seats for the smaller bar area. Very clean and well kept pub. Will go back again.

I recently visited this pub, after an absence of several months, and thought things would've improved. Unfortunately, the beer is not kept very well, the staff don't seem to care if you get served or not. I tried the fish and chips, and left most of them as they were swimming in grease. I wont be visiting again.
Romanique - 12 Aug 2009 11:51
happy to see rat traps in the car park and that the landlord is doing his best to get rid of the vermin.
It is the countryside after all...plus the foxes keep the rats away!
duncan_disorderly226 - 17 Jul 2009 11:54
Just to clarify - PROPER Sky TV is coming in the next few days to add to the 'foreign' 'Sky', so Lions Tour will all be available!

I hadn't drank in this pub for a long time due to the previous owners completely destroying its atmosphere. Im glad to say since the new owners took it over it has been brought back to life, great atmosphere, good beer, cocktails ,music, sky Tv, and fantastic food. Well done to the manager and chef for turning things round. I,ll definately be back!!!!!!!!!

Popped into this pub last week and was pleasantly surprised at the changes that its gone through, of particular note was the food which was top notch. Service was great with a friendly staff. The guy who posted the review below (jesus123) is obviously someone with either (a) a grudge or (b) a mental problem. Nobody goes back to a pub 3 days if they have had a bad experience! Great work put in by the new owners, highly recommend it.
rolotomassi - 23 May 2009 17:09
After My most recent visit, unfortunately the real ales have not been kept very well, and I decided not to eat after going outside for a cigarette and spotting the rat runs in the car park.
Shan't be returning again.

Tried the Sunday roast this weekend, nice fresh food, destroyed by reheating in a microwave, leaving it tasteless and bland.
Jesus124 - 11 May 2009 15:48
Also lots of leafy salads, on oversized plates, to make small portions look big.
Jesus124 - 8 May 2009 16:45
Greasy food, Beer close to expiring... over all not very enjoyable. Language and children out of control.

Happy to report the Barley Mow is back!
The pub reopened under new management on Tuesday 28/04/09.
Now being managed, Stuart the new landlord is a Glos boy, and likes his rugby. The pub now has two plasma screens, Sky & Setanta, and a jukebox installed.Food menu has been revised and reduced in price. Sunday roasts remain. Also, the beer prices have dropped by about 40p a pint - goods news!
Give it a try!

Sorry to report this pub is another victim of the decline in patrons in these harsh times. The tenant had to hand back the keys, and the pub was closed on Sunday 29 March.
Punch Taverns are the owners, and it's not clear what they are doing with the place. On the plus side, it's a listed building, and popular, so with some luck, they will put in a manager. At least if it's managed, it can compete (the last tenant had to pay way over the odds for the tied beers).
Let's hope Punch rethink their rent/tie policies, and another tenant can be found to make a go of this 17th century inn.

Lovely old style pub with a modern touch in a beautiful area

Couple of decent ales on tap, well worth trying

Nice garden area, and friendly staff

Under the new management, this pub is growing. The quality of the beer is excellent, as is the food on offer. You'll need to get there early on a Sunday, as the roast buffet is so popular that there isn't a seat to be had between 12 and 2.30. The staff are ALL friendly, and bar snacks consisting of chicken wings samosas etc. are put out on weekdays around supper time.
A nice smokers area has been constructed at the rear (for those who do), which means nobody has to run the gauntlet outside the front when entering (for those who don't). Complimentary newspapers on offer daily.
2 fruit machines, no quiz machines, no jukebox, no pool table. Discreet background music.

Live music on some Saturdays, and a weekly Quiz night with free snacks.

Note that Sky has been removed from this pub since the refit, but there is one plasma offering freeview.

All in all, a friendly, clean and quite cosy pub with a nice feel. Give it a try - you may well like it!

My wife and I popped in for lunch with our baby a few days after the smoking ban started. It looks great inside with recent refit and very family-friendly with new high chairs. The lady behind the bar even came out with a toy for our son which was nice. Very pleasant, nice beer, excellent food and not overly expensive. Very impressed overall compared to before and happy to recommend!
roobarb - 8 Jul 2007 20:07
Recently "refurbished". I don't really know why this pub exists to be honest. Tries top be all things to all men but fails dismally. At the last time I called in there were no proper beers on. Only really use it as a "resting" point between home and the Bricklayers Arms or the Chinese!

Not the worst pub in the world but certainly not the best either, as other comments have stated, it does seem to draw ubderage drinkers in, but the staff are always nice and its an ok joint for a quick pint!
Enz5060 - 22 Jan 2006 19:21
I actually had my work leaving drink in there (God bless Safeways RIP) and it was awesome! I somehow managed to get hammered without spending any money and they still didnt kick me out for doing air guitar to Guns n Roses. Top pub!!

I went in a few months ago on a friday, and the average age looked to be 15....

I would have to say that the Barley Mow is one of the best pubs round the area. The beer is top and it is at a very reasonable price spicily the John Smiths at only 1.80 a pint you cant go wrong and the food is wicked especially the burgers with cheese and bacon in them fill you up a treat. It has friendly staff and there never seems to be any trouble a top class pub if you ask me! Well recommended try it out!
JimBoy - 6 Apr 2005 14:44
Not great but pleasant, food is OK- worth at least one visit. Lovely old building, not sure about the add-ons. I think it's now under threat of developers so I'm visiting it again just to fight that!
Daevid - 18 Sep 2004 14:08
Decent size with a big conservatory where you can eat. Good carvery on a Sunday lunch but gets rammed. Beer is standard fodder.
Shame that it's right on a busy road and the outside seating is next to the road.
Been a few times with parents for food and it's pretty good.
anonymous - 6 Jan 2004 11:37
I am unsure about this pub. On my first visit to eat, the first item chosen (bacon) was off the menu, not a good start. Even I always have bacon stocked at home! The non-smoking area was nice, but too draughty. Beer is only OK. It does not compare to Wetherspoons well.

This pub has undergone a major refurbishment in the last year. It is now run by the ex-managers of the Old House At Home - Tony & Angela. A big screen TV was installed, but then removed due to the impracticality of the location. The Barley Mow has just gained a dart board, which will serve to bring the early 'trade' drinkers in, and away from other pubs nearby. Unfortunatley, the last refit of this listed building was to add a large ugly conservatory, and make it into a carvery. This transformed the pub into a waiting area for eaters, and destroyed its local drinker following. There is some evidence that these are now returning, as the latest refit has pushed the bias back more toward a pub - although food is still heavily promoted. Personally, I would rather drink there, then decamp to the excellent 'Full Moon' chinese restaurant opposite, rather than eat the pub fayre.

Worth a visit.
James - 18 Aug 2003 12:00
Re-development has not done it any favours. Except it is no longer a carvery!!
