Excellent drinkers pub with a great selection of ales to choose from. The building itself looks really old and traditional with uneven floors and low headroom doorways inside. There is an outside drinking area out the back which can be a bit of a sun trap on a nice day.

If you value old style pubs with no music, no cooked food, no children, an open fire, clean and well kept large selection of real ales then this is the pub for you...can get very busy at times but the hustle and bustle add to the atmosphere

Returned without my children, and enjoyed the beer (Pedi and Bass) as much as ever, although the pub was packed on a Thursday night despite any obvious attractions apart from the beer ! I loojk forward to taking my boys here when they reach 18.

I dropped in today for a quick beer, and found it a really lovely pub. I had a delicious local brew, and the welcome was friendly. I liked some of the sayings on the wooden beams ("My wife thinks I'm ugly when I'm drunk, but she looks pretty horrible to me when I'm sober"). I would certainly go back there again if I were in the area. This is a good old fashioned pub with stone floors, good beer and a marvellous atmosphere.

What a lovely pub, beer good, love the rustic feel, open fire, it's just a shame it's run by the most rude, ignorant and intolerable people I have ever met.
You are made to feel extremely uncomfortable, they give the impression, that you are an utter inconvenience to them. I have experienced being spoken too with distaste and also become witness to it happening to other customers.
The pub proclaims to welcome dog walkers, which I can confirm they do not, when I asked for a drink of water for my dogs, they flatly refused. I also dared moved a chair from our table and placed at another table so my dogs could go underneath, so as not to be in the way, the pub landlord replaced the chair at our table forcing the dogs out, and told us the dogs can't ' play' under there! I know sounds ridiculous, but true. As a result we definitely won't be going back!! good luck to all that drink at the Dead Poets!

I agree with Sarahlou84. The land lord & land lady spoil what would be a nice pub. Never have I had the misfortune to stumble upon such two unsuitable individuals as these to run a pub. Miserable, rude, aloof, stuck up, hates children, dogs; you name it they seem to hate it. Not only have they been rude to us on two occasions, we have seen it with several other couples. Why are they in this business? I will only return when the current land lord & land lady have gone. Here's a tip for the Land Lord, take all your different prohibitive signs down & just put one up that says,"Don't". Roll on retirement!

In response to sarahlou84 ...

Nobody gets asked to leave without good reason.

I happen to be the manager, and the group in question were being rude towards the landlady after being asked to quiet down as they were becoming more and more noisy. They were also messing about with ornaments on the shelves and continued to do so even after being asked not to.
If rude, noisy and unruly behaviour is what they consider to be "enjoying themselves" then I would prefer them to drink elsewhere ..

As for the "clicky" bit, we are anything but!
Everybody is welcome as long they respect us, our customers and our pub.

This is a very 'clicky' pub if you are not a local you are just not made to feel welcome. The bar staff were very rude and uptight! I happen to agree with the no children policy but the way the 'landlady'? went about enforcing this was completely unnecessary picking up a gentlemans pint and simply pouring it away. She then went on to remove a group in their 20's for no reason that we could see other than that they were enjoying themselves.
We wont be recommending this any time soon and certainly wont visit again!

I had the pleasure of visiting this pub on a visit to a friend who lives in Holbrook.

The choice of beer was excellent and by all accounts rotates regularly. Each of the beers I tried were excellent.

The fire was roaring giving the pub a nice feel, and the staff and locals all seemed very friendly. I will definatly be coming here again when next in Holbrook.

The Dead Poets is without doubt the BEST pub in Holbrook and is in the same quality league as the top pubs in the neighbouring villages the Holly Bush at Makeney and the King Billy at Milford.

The Dead Poets beer menu (which quotes the % ABV and price) is displayed on a chalk board just inside the entrance. It seems to be a mixture of regular beers and guests some from mainstream breweries, some from micros some served from the jug.. The quality is always first class and the service is usually pretty good too.

Lunchtime food is a selection of filled bread rolls. I have had better elsewhere, but the redeeming feature is the selection of Tyrells crisps on sale including my favourite the Ludlow Sausage flavour.

Overall, the Poets maintains a traditional pub quality and atmosphere. I am supportive of its children and dogs policies. LONG may it continue 9/10

So nice to see so many who agree with our children policy ..
There are plenty of signs up stating that children are welcome in the conservatory until 8pm (late enough in my opinion) ..
As for badly behaved dogs (see Jonnyholbrook comment above), we won't have them in the pub, we strive to make The Dead Poets a freindly, welcoming pub full of atmosphere, banter and character but what makes the place what it is are the customers ..

Many thanks for the words of praise! Keep spreading the love!

A nice pub to visit with friendly staff and regulars. Abbott and Pedigree served from the jug plus another five or six handpumps (i think!). Always something on that I fancy and it is always great quality. Westons Old Rosie scrumpy is also a favourite up there!
Paved stone flooring and I would advise people to take a glance at some of the signs and pictures adorning the walls as many of them are interesting and amusing.
Also, in agreement to the earlier mention of seats by the fireplace I usually avoid them no matter how cold I am when I first arrive!

This pub is like the Turks head in st Helena. It serves a range of well served beer but most of it is of the yellow variety which seems to be taking over all real ale pubs. If you like that stuff then the pub is just the ticket. If you like proper bitter/porter/stout you maybe dissapointef.

An excellent pub, with a proper atmosphere.

Get there early if you want a seat or are in a group, can be very busy in the evenings and frequently has more people in it that in can comfortably hold

In the winter, you may well be surprised to find a nice welcoming seat free, right by the fire .
The reason for this is that within 5 minutes you are stripped to your pants and suffering from heat exhaustion !

Long may the landlords no children in the pub policy last
It is a blessed relief not to be plagued with bored and unruly kids

Kids are unfortunately allowed in the conservatory and this can be a like a crche at weekends and early evenings

Altogether this is a pub, for adults, to drink beer in.
Exactly how they should be

Brilliant place! If you can manage the walk, be sure to call in there after visiting the Holly Bush in Makeney. Incredibly popular, even in the middle of the week - I couldn't get a seat! Beers are all top notch, and theres some hand pulled cider too.
jarofporter - 27 Mar 2009 19:21
Fantastic Pub. Wonderful atmosphere and brilliant ale. Shame about the 'no kids' policy but I can see how kids in the bar could change the ambience! They did grudgingly put the heater on in the conservatory for us.

Hope to go back withour kids one day!
Grumpy_Old_Man - 31 Dec 2008 20:25
It is a PUB. If you are not 18, you should not be allowed in. Unless you are my 17 yr old brother with my driving licence. But kids can stay at home or go to the pantomime or roll a hoop around with a stick, etc. I am bored. But this pub is excellent. Fantastic choice of ale.

On overdue return visit, I noted the relevance of some comments below. I couldn't take my children into the snug, only the rather chilly conservatory, which has nothing of the Poet's famous atmosphere. The Pedigree was still excellent, but the fire was out (in more ways than one). Will return on my own !

Great pub with excellent beer, fantastic bar staff. one barman in particular was rather impressive - the one with the tattoos and shaved head - he looked rather tasty! (nice bum too) i would reccomend this pub to anyone.

What a fantastic pub! NO food and more importantly NO screaming kids, that you normally end up babysitting because their pissed up parents are incapable of looking after them, nurseries and yooth clubs are for kids. Pubs are for adults!!!!!!!!!!!!!
skinheadskins - 6 Dec 2007 19:31
Excellent pub - good beer, clientelle etc - shame about the couple who run it. It would seem they would prefer badly behaved dogs to well behaved children.
Jonnyholbrook - 28 Apr 2007 11:57
After living in Holbrook for most of my life , I would suggest that people who are advised by the information about the dead poets inn that they accept children are wrong .Two weeks ago I was told to take my children home at 9.30pm this was their licensing law. Tonight I was ordered at 9.00pm to get out of the pub because their law was 8.00pm.If you have children and would like a nice drink with nice people and a friendly landlord go to the wheel 100yrds up the road, the food is good too.Children are not welcome in this pub.
sykes_szumyk - 27 Apr 2007 22:32
Visited last week and as good as ever; only noted a reduction in the heat of the fire and a more upmarket crowd than before (Holbrook looks like a fantastic village to live in). Pedigree still from the jug, decent range of guests, and nothing from the owners Everards. Still in the Top 10 nationally in my view.
mtaylor40 - 11 Feb 2007 23:25
On last visit still my favourite pub - Everards have done a great job in doing nothing ! - great beer and atmosphere - you won't want to leave
