user reviews of the Dukes Head, Leatherhead

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

THis is the worst pub south of watford gap I have encountered

Doorman assaulted me , a 55 year old visitor for taking pictures outside .. makes you wonder what they have to hide ?

Manager / maybe owner threatened to smash my f*cking phone and face in ..... Until doorman pushed me to the floor then they disappeared.
If I had know the bad reputation this pub had I would not have gone near it . Avoid is my opinion.

Pub is dark and cramped, smells pretty bad and toilets are horrible. Choice of ale was worse than poor. Took ages to get served as no bar staff behind the bar, they were chatting to friends. Not very friendly either. Went for a pint of stella which wasn't badly priced, but tasted metallic/chemically??? Complained to a very rude member of bar staff, so left. On my way home my throat was burning up, after a few hours decided to see a doctor who said that my throat was inflamed in a way consistent with beer line cleaner !!! Have reported to mole valley council, but if you go here make sure you stick to bottles.

Visited early on a Saturday evening, when a live football game was showing on the screens. Busy crowd and friendly enough, extremely small toilets (very very cosy I must add), choice of beer was okay but my favourite Doom Bar had just finished and the barmaid immediately offered me something else. Had a very good pint of London Pride, poured perfectly and was very drinkable. Nice pub, good decor, price was reasonable, numbers were good...but here's 2 negatives...I asked for a Whiskey & coke for the wife, and was given a Jack Daniels without even being asked if this was the Whiskey I wanted, for the record there were at least another 3 whiskey's on display, the 2nd negative was that straight after the football ended & while the sound was still on, the bar staff put extremely load music on, like at nightclub level, quite strange. Maybe I'm just being a bit picky on the 2 negatives. I would certainly visit again when next in Leatherhead

Well here I was again, The Dukes Head, its been a while since my last posts so I thought I would have another go, so what's changed apart from not getting as much change as i used to, I seem to be spending less time in the pub as i used to but almost as much of my money, what's going on? do we have four tax rises a year now or something? maybe its just the Carlsberg that keeps going up a lot over the past few years, I'll have to cut down to one day a week drinking if the prices keep going up at this rate, I don't think they heard there was a recession going on, bloody bankers! sometimes I do think less is more, but to be fair there are still more expensive pubs in Leatherhead...well for the moment anyway and it is the THE BEST TASTING CARLSBERG IN LEATHERHEAD, even when I don't get a full pint for my 2.95, oh and dont leave your drink unattended for more than a few seconds, even if its full and fresh it might end up in the glass wash, you dont want to be paying 2.95 more times than you need to!

To me THE DUKES HEAD IS THE BEST PUB IN LEATHERHHEAD, it has the atmosphere that the wetherspoons desperadosly lacks (like the pun guys?) its still not quite as expensive as three of the other pubs in the town though it must be getting close now, the staff are mostly friendly, even the jobsworth with the long dark hair, even he's cool on a good day, especially when he's off duty, I quite like him then

The Pub has GOOD MUSIC AT THE WEEKENDS, this is good because I can never find anything I want to put on on the duke box even if I could afford to put money in it after i paid for my pints, the people who do the karaoke are really good, though I think they think its x-factor sometimes, and I sometimes wonder if they would sing all night themselves if they could get away with it, but they obviously like singing that's why they do it, and they are pretty good to be fair, almost as good as the famous T-bag and Medows (this is a must see at the weekend!)

the pub has had a slight refit in the last 12 months and is LOOKING PRETTY RESPECTABLE, they have plenty of large flatscreen tv's for the sports channels but I'm still waiting for my 3D TV to be installed, not that they would let me watch porn in the pub but I would be quite happy to stand in the corner with my over priced pint wearing 3D glasses....pubs should sell popcorn

so my cokes are getting smaller

oh sorry the good points..

great tasting cold beer with just the right amount of fizz

friendly staff*

good food... mmmmm food

great weekend music, though on karaoke you might have to sing yourself, sometimes I even sing**

all the sport you need with multi screen viewing (though a perminant tv outside would be good)

bbq's in the summer sunshine*
A sheltered outside smoking area with lights seating and heating
A new pool table in its own area separate from the rest of the bar
A dart board
Games machines
and board gamesbored games? Do people still play those?

*friendly staff, fizz and sunshine are subject to availability, your drink maybe at risk if you spill it or leave it unattended or forget where you left it, my jokes and my singing may sound better when your drunk, pig skins taste great, peanuts may contain nuts, always read the label.
animals, idiots and amidults (half animal half adult) who cannot handle a drink, with verbally abusive diarrhoea maybe asked politely to leave.
The Dukes head is a Public House, we don't have a right to be in it, WE ARE ALL GUESTS in it.

I rate this pub 9/10

I went to this pub on 11/02/2011 and I have to say I had a great time!!
people that drink in this pub are so friendly and make your night the drinks are cheap and they had a DJ who was not too good at first but he soon understood what everybody wanted to listen too with there requests the bar staff could smile a bit more but who cares!! I had a fantastic time and cant wait to go back!! :D
leatherheadlass - 12 Feb 2011 19:57
Sometimes you walk into a pub look around and think "mmm.. this has charm" pity the miserable bar staff were lacking a bit of charm. To be fair it was lunch time and for a quiet pub if you want to sit on your own and read a paper not bad. One word of warning though stay away from the food unless you like eating hockey pucks on burnt bread rolls, it was suppose to be a burger, how can you get that wrong??? This place could be so much more it just needs someone with vision and at least a bit more cooking knowledge that being able to press a few buttons on a microwave. I give this pub experience 2 out of 10
rcreff - 27 Oct 2010 17:09
Oh dear, what a short memory, only barred two people eh? My arse you barred willy nilly, Still I beleive you have now gone from there> Does not bother me, tata
aphrodite - 5 Oct 2010 07:15
Aphrodite!! I have been looking at other Pub reviews that you post on this site, and I have to say that if your experience of your local pubs is so bad and your enjoyment of them is so bad I have to question why you come to visit us at all!!!
I hope you dont mind if I make a suggestion. Why dont you stay at home, and be bitter and twisted there? I hear Sainsburys do some good deals on booze, and I think you should take advantage of those deals. I say this because you obviously have too much time on your hands making comments and lies about Bars that work hard to provide a safe, pleasant, and legal form of hospitality. I hope you take this advice as I find your negativity so boring.

Hi. I would like to answer the last comment made by aphrodite . I am around the Pub all day long, and also if you were stupid enough to make what I remember to be false and derogitory remarks whilst standing in front of the Pub, then I think that you deserved to be barred. If my memory serves me well I have only barred 2 people for making comments outside the Pub and they were making threats with regard to the false rumour that I had sacked one of my staff, which to be honest was none of their concern even if it was true. So the answer is simple if you want to know something then ask , and maybe learn to keep your mouth shut until you find out the truth. May I also add that if you come from the Posh end of Town why is your spelling so bad?
raolert - 19 Nov 2009 21:03
The other new manager is crud, a fiend for barring people, never seen so gets staff to do his dirty work. He loolks out his bedroom window and listens to remarks abouit him theen, woosh yer barrerd. My friend and I were barred on saturday, didn't even get in the door, as my friend is almost sixty and I am 48 we are not excactly a menace to society. Don't think our faces fit as I am from the poshe end of Learhead and i spose chas are more welcome, So watch this space, he won't last long
aphrodite - 5 Nov 2009 08:46
Re my last post please not that they have Directors and Bombardier, not Broadside......Oops.
andyhagerty - 31 Oct 2009 15:43
This pub has changed. The new landlord has made a great difference. Still has a bit of an "edge" but that is not a bad thing. Starting to have live music on Saturday nights, this should continue as it has a good crowd, and makes for a good night out.
Feels like a traditional pub, unlike others in the town (With the excepion of The Running Horse).
Directors and Broadside on handpump, both were in good condition when I visited. Staff were good, did not have to wait for hours to get served.

All in all this pub is going in the right direction.
andyhagerty - 31 Oct 2009 15:36
Low life under age chavs abound in there. It is as bad as wetherspoons across the road. Mini mafia live in there (a blimmin joke they are too)
aphrodite - 26 Oct 2009 16:22
I would like to say that since the new Manager has taken over THIS PUB HAS CHANGED a great deal. The review that says that if "you visit this Pub you will leave in an ambulance" is no longer applicable,he has cleaned out this pub with great effect, and nearly all of the aforementioned "Idiots" are nowhere to be seen. The bar is now focused on a family environment with Children welcome untill the early evening, The food is as good as it has always been,it is well presented and well worth the money. I hope this change will prove to be the making of the Pub, as it is a nice Bar with a much more relaxed atmosphere.

raolert - 31 Aug 2009 22:23
Avoid at all costs. Trouble, poor beer and expensive. The prices seemed to go up through the evening. Not a nice place to drink a all.
peterjonsey - 4 Jan 2009 21:35
The Return of The Dukes Head....Inspired by another pub accross the road I thought it was time i did a review in this local pub since my harsh but fair input back in August, I can honestly say its starting to become a real pleasure to drink up the Dukes again, its had a hard few years with managment changes and general intibility, but with the good mix of new ownership and management it has vastly improved, the new manager Jay is a great guy, even if he is from manchester lol the staff and managment as a whole do a good job, i can even understand what the polish guys are saying to me most of the time, i'm even starting to like the the guys, even if they are polish, and a bit mad lol joking aside I honestly think this pub has bounced back, I never have a bad pint, its always cold and wet and tastes just like it should, sometimes the staff ask me what i'm drinking before i even realise i'm in the pub! now thats service right there!... the prices have increaced over the last 24 months but its still not the rip off that some other pubs are, and you get good quality.

I was going to say something about the lock still being broken on the gents toilets but i'm not going to incase i get barred for saying something bad about the place lol

In a nutshell, its still a good pub that it used to be, with friendly staff & management, quality food and drink, and good entertainment, though i still dont think you need karaoke on both friday and saturday night, its just a bit much.

Be warned, though friendly with a gsoh the management will not put up with crap even if they think of you as a friend, but is that really such a bad thing?
keion007 - 11 Nov 2008 15:12
The Dukes Head..I used to love this pub, its had some good managers in its time but its not like it used to be, it used to be self policed with a good team, a real local pub with no real trouble, no more than any other good pub has anyway....

...then things changed, then changed again, then again and again, now its just not the same, its lost its stabilaty, its lost its character, its lost everything that made it so good yet had things added it could really do without, the bully boys at the weekend for example, ffs! dose it really take 2 thugs to deal with a lad out having a few beers because they think he is being a bit loud, not because he really needs sorting out but just to make the pumped up steroid boys look bigger than they already do, anyway i'm sure thats a management job, i always thought the door staff were employed to assist the manager with any real issues and to stop any real issues getting through the door, i'm sure they dont all have a licence to work on the door anyway plus i dont think a door man kicking a lad that looked half his size while he was on the floor is a good look tbh, but what do i know, i only used to be a Pub manager... moving onto the entertainment, karaoke every week? i love karaoke, well i did, do we really need karaoke every week? once a month was good but once a week?? it just seems silly to me for a pub that size... i think the guy who runs it likes a good sing tho, i think he's the only one singing half the time lol he dose love himself bless him.

Please dont let this put you off the dukes compleatly, i have been in worse pubs than this, and worked in worse, its still my local and tho its not as good as it used to be they do normally serve a good pint, it could be as good as it used to be with the right people and without the door staff, and the bar staff arnt too bad if you can get passed the language barrier, they just change too often.

rant over i'm going for a pint now....up the Dukes lol
keion007 - 27 Aug 2008 21:16
I don't know what experiences some people on here have had, but this is the only lively place to be in Leatherhead - Spoons is too quiet - no music or atmnosphere. Management works hard to make sure there's good basic burgers, great live music ("Rhedd" were especially good band but i haven't seen them there for a while, but you do get some bad bands down here cos obviously they're paid pub prices for playing, so u get what u pay for), good solid salt of the earth people. My mate Weston is a regular and if there's any trouble he'll sort people out. lol Love the pub. leatherhead's finest!
Tenacity - 30 Apr 2008 13:49
I can honestly say this was the first Deliverance tribute night I've ever been to. Don't think I'll be going again mind you. Makes the Wetherspoon's across the road look like Claridges.

lollypop - 22 Mar 2008 20:07
Steve & Joe are the best looking blokes on a Wednesday night because they play darts for the Dukes.....
It's a great night for a laugh and the boys keep us smiling : )
Dart69 - 1 Feb 2008 16:11
Good looking men down on a Wednesday night........
Dart69 - 31 Jan 2008 13:08
Hi, Having visited this pub and tasted the excellent bear and wine, I have been somewhat surprised to read these ratings. But then again, they are all very old. In fact, reading some of them, I found it hard to believe they were talking about the same pub !! If you haven't been for a long time, I can recommend another visit and soon. Great atmosphere, friendly and efficient staff, pool table, Dj on Friday and karaoke on Saturday : )

nicolaa - 28 Nov 2007 18:46
Aggressive and violent - avoid where possible
anonymous - 18 Jul 2007 12:22
Useless pub for real ale,its potluck if there's any on
but generally a friendly pub.Food has improved and is good value too.
bitterlover - 23 Oct 2006 15:17
Four pubs, surely not? Dukes Head was the busiest, and had a quality pool table area. Big TV screens, ok service, bit worried I was gonna be stabbed, but never mind. At least we had discovered people in Leatherhead! Not a bad atmosphere considering, but anything was better than what we had previously encountered in this shabby little town.
DAFCpubreviewer - 6 Sep 2006 01:12
Disgraceful place full of idiots! Really poor food. It would be much better off in a different town! Some nice structure. Shame but it's always been bad!
anonymous - 2 Dec 2005 20:41
Good for atmosphere. Unique range of beers though I didn't try any of them - don't know if they are any good?
Will2 - 21 May 2005 22:09
This feels like a pub with quite a nice atmosphere. Good for watching sport as well
aleman - 20 May 2005 15:41
A pokey little place full of weirdos. When will they realise the live bands just empty the place!
Jack - 30 Aug 2004 16:51
Extremely cheap grub and its good value for money too. Quite a nice little pub
gge - 29 Aug 2004 21:28
The burgers, what can you say!? Stunning food and ambience.
Nick - 27 May 2004 16:34
Todays Lunch was by far the Best Yet! hasn't dissapointed so far, well done the Dukey's
penelope alexander - 27 May 2004 16:24
The place to be on a Thursday......the staff are so friendly!!!
James - 27 May 2004 13:35
easily the best place in leatherhead during the day. burgers are incredible, i try and go every week as my diet need the dukes. 5 mayonaise, 5 tommy k and a mustard, a must for the best yet.
Tom - 27 May 2004 13:21
Fantastic, friendly pub! In my opinion the best in leatherhead, its prices are fair, there is background music (daytime) duke box evening/weekends and on Saturday nights live bands, karaoke, disco. This pub also has all relevant Sky channels, all the music and sky sports dates are listed in the pub for convenience. The pub has a good choice of food and has three outside eating and drinking areas, staff and regulars do not tolerate trouble makers.
keion007 - 19 Jan 2004 14:42
Nice food, management changes frequently.Decent irish people in here, the salt of the earth.
chris - 9 Dec 2003 15:20
The burgers in this place are amazing, i go every week and each week i consider having the fish for a milli second before opted for the old faithful. a fantastic thursday every week for me.
tom - 6 Nov 2003 13:22
Met some very interesting people in here, also met some numpties.
Beer wasn't too good but the food was ok.
Michael - 12 Aug 2003 00:11
This is a gay pub so be warned, unless you're gay and you like men touching and stuff. Nice beer and TV (take TV however you like!)
Gabrielle - 4 Jul 2003 14:21
Not bad pub - nice they stay open late at weekends. Excellent takeaway Balti House opposite too.
Gerald - 2 Jul 2003 12:18
Love this place for a quite drink. Or to watch the footie in. It does tend to have some old boys in it during the day, but its just full of normal people in the evening. It also serves untill midnight on Friday and Saturday (they wont let you in after 10:30). Also you can get six shots for a fiver!!!
Steve - 25 Jun 2003 15:09
Full of old-timers! Felt like an old people's home although, the food is very good and the beer / lager is not too bad either.
Keevin - 1 Jun 2003 16:18
Pretty average high street boozer. The food is very good and excellent value for the large portions.
Angus - 20 Apr 2003 13:52
