A surprisingly low rating for what is a perfectly good pub.

A pub with history? It was run down for years and them became a Slug and Lettuce!!

Food & Fool do it again, take a pub with a history, atmosphere and good vieb and plough it into the ground with another cookie cutter gastropub. Hope they go bust, soon!

No music, no TV and all the food is freshly cooked. I like this place.

It's now the Roebuck. It has a retaurant at the back opening up to a very pleasant garden to enjoy the sunshine (hah!)in.

Service is pleasant and they do have a guest beer every week.

I thought it had reverted to its original name of the Roebuck. You're right though it does look very restauranty, if that's a word.

The Birdcage had a nice mostly gay but mixed atmosphere. What is this gay-unfriendly gastro pub that replaces the Birdcage? With a name like Food and Fuel it sounds like a petrol station. Chiswick has a great selection of restaurants and pubs, but a gastro pub is the worst of both worlds: higher priced drinks and precooked Yuppy grub at inflated prices served with loud music, a perfect formula for indigestion and to kill conversation.

the bircage is to close this weekend.i went there last night and they where auctioning the pictures the birdcages etc with proceeds for a good cause.it will open again in 6 weeks time as a gastro pub.

Awful. I go in here every so often with my gay friends, but even they agree that the male assistant manager (if there's only the one) has an attitude, or is a "bitch" if you will. He looks down his nose at everyone, and doesn't care if you're gay or straight. Thought it was just me, but when my friends agreed....., well. His female accomplise is nearly as bad. The overall manager though, by contrast is a nice bloke, but doesn't seem to be there often (so I'm told)
Not a lot else to say.

My fav Chiswick pub! I am not gay but this pub is very void of meathead football neanderthals shouting at TV screens. Friendly staff who make sure you get a full pint. Nice decor good atmos. has fun drag nights etc

the manager is nice, but staff can be over camp sometimes, which is not very nice...

Been to this place in many of its previous incarnations and this is easily the best. Friendly to all, good cheap food and a good place to relax with the papers or meet friends.

Really do love the bar. Extremely open and relaxed. Never feel like you are out of place.

Good example is being their on a Friday evening reading a book on one of the leather couches by myself. Felt completely comfortable doing so. (I sound quite sad there don't I?)

shouldn't discriminate. if we want to be treated with respect we should do it to straights.

My partner and I have always had a delightful time, interesting conversation with some very nice, friendly patrons. Service was great without being bothersome.
We visit Chiswick twice a year and like Birdcage because it is not a "scene".
