This one does real ale now. Previous ales include Jennings Tom Fool, Black Sheep Best Bitter and a Harviestoun one. At a reasonable 2.45 a pint (with the Yellow Card) you can't complain.

"It's a Scream pub what do you expect?" does not excuse bad service and a lousy choice of beer, and had to wait almost an hour for a cold plate of sloppy mash and solid sausages.A rather unpleasant experience all round.

Certainly not "The Best Pub In York" as one of the previous reviewers states. Nowhere near it. It's part of the "It's A Scream" chain, therefore it's frozen/fried fayre on the menu, washed down with some Carling lager. Aimed at students, but even with the Yellow Card it's still not cheap. Good location under Monk Bar, but for a more satisfying meal or beer the Royal Oak is just across the road.

I think on my last review of this I was being a bit too polite!
Truthfully I think the staff are rude as they go round serving their friends first.
Most of the staff are students themselves and that probably accounts for their arrogance and ignorance. One particular barmaid makes me bite my tongue very hard to stop me saying anything unpleasant (short girl with short dark hair). She never fails to give customers "dirty looks".
Pool is good though! and food is still great!

Not impressed to be honest. I find the students that go in there to be quite arrogant and are mostly "the popular kids". The food is nice though and staff are pretty decent. Good music on jukebox. Non students that go in there are pleasant and thats a plus for it. Drinks arent amazing but they will do! (before you say i am being studentist or something... im a student)

As mentioed by other reviews, a great pub to watch sport, staf are very friendly, and meals are great value for money.

Pretty good boozer all round - staff are always friendly and efficient, prices are good, with or without a yellow card, and food is reliable. Beer garden is good - nice to have somewhere to sit outside in York. I have always found the landlord charming -maybe I am one of the "attractive women" in on a weeknight? Maybe I'm not tho'. Great place to watch sport.

This is the best pub in York. They serve a wide selection of drinks at prices that can't be beaten. The food is great and the staff are always friendly and happy to show any sporting event on one of their two big screens or numerous televisions. There is also a spacious outdoor area with plenty of seating. Rumour has it they will be showing the world cup in the beer garden on a huge TV. Why go anywhere else to watch the match?

i love the keystones. the staff, beer and food are great. the atmosphere is friendly and mixed - not just students! the pool table, games machines comfortable areas, juke box, sport coverage (deal or no deal sometimes!) and sun trap beer garden make the keystones a great place to be! from what i can see the staff and the manager have a relaxed attitude and want everyone to have fun, they mix in with the students and the regulars for friendly banter and a good time! it's ace xxxxxxxxxx

Used to drink here while a student at York St John. There is generally a good fun atmosphere, probably enhanced by the number of attractive women in on a normal weekday.
The juke box has a wide range of songs and plays videos at the same time as the song.
The bar staff are friendly and seem to enjoy what they are doing. One negative, on busy nights the landlord patrols the door and seems to have a bad attitude which really lets down an otherwise fantastic venue.

If you know students and use there discount card at the bar then its great. If your not a fan of students then stay away. Smallish pub on corner close to university campus.

Quite a pleasant, studenty pub, one of the Scream pubs chain, so very similar in decor and drinks to all the others. But still nice, a pleasant, fairly cheap place to drink, play pool and chill with friends. Often frequented by large groups, often of sporting teams so perhaps not to everybody's taste....
