The Beehive, Brixton

Okay for a pre-Academy pint, better than the Goose across the way (although a warm can of tennants in a shop doorway would be preferable to that place). Last time I was here it seemed to be full of very smelly, very drunk men with collections of rotting carrier bags who were leering at anyone female. The bloke I was with said there was a tramp passed out in the toilets.

The Pembury Tavern, Hackney

Big old pub, feels like a bit of a warehouse when not busy but makes up for the slight lack of atmosphere with great beers and loads of games, books and newspapers available. Food looked (and smelt) good; not cheap, but value for money. I agree with criticism below, it'd be good if a little more info regarding the beers on tap was available/displayed near the bar - I know there are the occasional flyers up on walls around the pub, but it's a little confusing upon first entering to be confronted by all the unfamiliar (to me, heathen that I doubtless am) beer names. Beware the home-cooked pork scratchings though, they're...pungent.

The Worlds End, Camden

Home of the most shocking pub loos in London? Early on on a Friday night and three of the ladies loos were out of order, the floor was covered in a layer of rancid water and it stank to high heaven. Aside from that, the place is a fairly decent place to meet people off the tube, although the bouncers always seem to be hustling out this or that druggie/alcoholic homeless person who is totally off their box.
