The Haunch of Venison, Salisbury

If there is one pub in Salisbury not to be missed, it is surely The Haunch of Venison. From the pewter bartop to the tiny 'snug' which was originally used by horse-drawn coach drivers while their passengers dined at the inn, not to mention the mumified remains of the severed hand of a card cheat from the pub's dim and distant past. What an amazing place to enjoy a drink.

The Avon Brewery Inn, Salisbury

When I was at the Art College in the late eighties, this was one of the best pubs in town. Always a friendly and welcoming atmosphere and great beer. Judging by the other reviews I'm pleased to see that little seems to have changed.

The Swan, Brentwood

A nice selection of real ales, complete with guest beers and 'beer festivals', and occassional live music (including an excellent Beatles tribute duo) are the plus points. The latest management team and the introduction of heavy handed bouncers at weekends are definitely not. Suffering from the current malaise of catering for booze tourists from surrounding towns instead of locals.
