The French Horn, Gerrards Cross

Sports bar with large screens showing most major sporting events. Only 1 Sky channel, but probably the only sports bar in Gerrards Cross with pool tables. Tends to get busy during major events e.g. cup finals etc. Young crowd, mostly students and yuppies. Open till 12 Friday and Saturday.

The Great Grog Wine Bar, Edinburgh

Pedestrianised street enables smoking at covered tables outside. At the moment, the Grog bar, which occupies the ground floor of Hanover Hotel, looks like a cross between an airport lounge and a corner-shop deli.

The 100-strong wine list focuses on southern France and the New World. Meadows is particularly enthusiastic about South Africa; he offers Rustenberg, Veenwouden Merlot and Hamilton Russell Pinot Noir. From Australia, theres everything from cheap chardonnay quaffers to Penfolds Grange (from 350 a bottle). The highlight from New Zealand is Cloudy Bay Sauvignon Blanc 2001 by the magnum.

Krug Reserve is at over 350 pounds per bottle, but standard wines start from about 7 quid.

"This is a haven for anyone looking for a decent glass of wine"
