The Lord Raglan, Nangreaves

As per the terrible visit - see review 24 Oct 2004 23:09.

Just want you to know that where ever we are, if we see your beer, we boycott it.

Best thing is, since 2004 almost everywhere in Ramsbottom and improved and most offer great service and great beer and actually serve food on clean plates!!

We even have a better brewery now.

Still, looking at reviews it doesn't look like things have changed.

Avoid this pub.

The Lord Raglan, Nangreaves

Look, I avoid long reviews, but this may really help you to avoid wasting time and letting people down. Please read on because it was so bad I had to write this.

About two weeks ago, we felt like Sunday lunch and we'd seen the sign at the end of the M66. We thought, sounds good, found it, great views, had pub lunch, great, good pub - we thought.

So, today was my Mum's 60th birthday. She didn't know where she'd like to go, so we
recommended the Lord Raglan. We'd thought we had found the perfect pub - read on.

Today is the 24th October 2004. We were a big party (5 + 3 year old) so I phoned and booked for 5:30pm.

We arrived at about 5:45 but it took ten minutes stood around like spare parts until I asked the kitchen porter to get someone who could tell us where to sit.

A grey haired man (I assume the landlord/manager/Terry?) appeared and confirmed the booking and told us to order drinks and please wait until our table was ready. Great, we enjoyed the fantastic beer.

After a good gap, the lardlord asked if we were ready to order. And we did, fine.

Soon, a waitress told us our food was ready and we moved from the bar to the restaurant. Now, before I explain the forthcoming events, you should know that there is seating for about 60+ diners. There were 12 diners including ourselves. Sometimes, places are too busy, so you plan to come back another time when it's quiet.

The food was instantly served; on greasy/dirty plates. We complained and the waitress and land lord whisked them away, all plates, to the kitchen so sort out. A few minutes later, the food returned, colder than before and, I suspect on different plates, but still the were covered in grease. It's a birthday so we carried on and shrugged it off.

The food seemed good, but one of us had ordered a Thai curry with naan+chuckney. Despite asking for it, it took ten minutes and my asking the Lard Lord at the bar for a small, and crap (no other word for it) Nan bread / chuckney to appear.

We ordered two drinks - simple - large dry white wines. Again, I had the leave the table and ask the Land Lord for the drinks.

The meal itself was ok, nothing better than that. But, if you like mixed grills, I would be careful. I'm vegetarian so, it was so-so, but you have to be so careful with meat and this meal was served cold/luke warm. Dodgy? Also, there was a white without a collar cat wandering around the table. I dont think this is legal?

We now wanted to order desert - yes, we were still wanting to spend money here. No waitress, she'd seen us and gone down stairs, ignored us. Again, for the third time so far, I had to approach the bar and ask the Land Lord why "I have to work so hard to get a decent meal?".

He came over, took the plates and gave desert menus. As he took the plates, he dropped a gravy covered knife down the front of my wifes top. She handed it to him and he soon returned to take the desert order.

I asked why he had not apologised for dropping the cutlery on my wife. "Any deserts?" was the reply.

We called a stop, asked for the bill and cut our losses. My father, who was paying the bill, was too embarrassed to ask for a reduction and so the Lard Lord got his money and doesn't care one bit.

QUICK CONCLUSION
To sum up. The Land Lord WILL NOT APPOLOGISE even if there are numerous faults on his part, let alone his stall. The food is, so-so. Beer ok. I could walk from Ramsbottom (where I live) to this pub and have a great drink (or three), but I won't. It's the worst meal I've had in four years. So poor and so over rated, it's trading on its good name for self brewed ale. If thats how they deal with customers, God knows what they put in the ale. Go to Owed Betts or the Strawberry Duck and if you go the Ramsbottom, there is Bellinis Italian, Ramsons (more posh and Chris the owner is a star), the China Cottage and many more. Even a chip barm at the Major pub would have beaten this and their beer/atmosphere is great!
