Tap and Spile, Framwellgate Moor

Always at least six beautifully kept ales, listed on a 'Beer Menu' at the bar in order of strength. Also Old Rosie cider and Leffe Blonde if you are with non-ale drinkers. Four main rooms divided by a central corridor. On the right, family rooms with pool; on the left, bar and lounge with predominantly wooden interiors. No piped music, resulting in an excellent convivial atmosphere. Definitely worth the 20 minute walk from the city centre. Quiz on Wednesdays at 9.

The Woolpack Inn, Boot

After an tiny and expensive meal in a huge empty dining room, I had a chat with the owner to find out what he was up to. He is completely deluded. He thinks you have to do fancy food to get people to travel further than the two (excellent) pubs a mile down the road in Boot. The thing is, nobody will travel any distance for the bizarre food he's offering (and cooking). He was too busy protesting about how wonderful his ideas are to listen to any feedback. What a waste of a fantastic location. Hopefully somebody competent will take it over soon. The one beer that was on was good though.

The Woodman Inn, Durham

Landlord Peter has departed, and Paula (his ex) has now returned. Great news, except Scottish and Newcastle won't let her use microbreweries any more. So Durham Brewery's brewery tap is no more. A tragedy. I am sure Paula will do a great job nonetheless, and will serve the real ales she can buy beautifully. A very friendly and excellent local.
