First went to this pub as a student 10 years or so ago and my friend and I had lasers trained on us. The atmosphere was borderline menacing. We didn't go back for a decade.
Until...
Decided to re-visit it for only the second time during a pub crawl (sheer desperation at that stage as we trying to get around 30 pubs for a friend's 30th birthday). Place is still weird and the locals not exactly forthcoming but no direct threats of violence, which is progress of sorts I suppose.

Tiny but really quite quaint. However, watch out for a bearded Aussie called Nick - an extreme blagger!

Only discovered this at the end of a trip but thought it was an excellent pub with bags of charm. The girl behind the bar was also quite attractive - which is always a winner. :-)

Quite disappointed by the accommodation. The rooms are of quite variable quality and yet seem to be similar in terms of price. Mine was above the restaurant and smelled of curry ALL the time, not good first thing. There was no wardrobe, the TV didn't work, and some of the tiles had come away from the bath/shower and had not ben replaced. The bathroom door also looked like it had been kicked and the room was generally shoddy in appearance. I expected better for �80 per night.
Worse, every morning I was woken by the dog that they lock up to stop it hassling those having their breakfast, which is fair enough, but the dog keeps whingeing and barking for the duration and it's bloody loud and gets fairly annoying after a while.
Stay in the Wykeham Arms if you can - quality.
