The Somerset Arms, Semington, has been closed for a few months. It is currently (Jun 2009) being renovated, and should be opening 6.30pm on Fri Jul 3rd 2009.

The Barge Inn, Honeystreet

Excellent pub, friendly staff & locals.
Well-kept beer and good unpretentious food.
Tucked-away along a private road from just South of the canal bridge, running past the timber yard. A much more obvious landmark from the Kennet and Avon canal!

The Beehive, Widbrook

Sadly, despite excellent ales and good food, the customers failed to come in sufficient numbers and, as of September 2008, the Beehive is now CLOSED.

The Lamb, Trowbridge

Interior refurbished in the last year or so and now serves good snack lunches (burgers, open sandwiches) at reasonable prices to council and other office workers at lunchtimes. Usually pretty quiet early evenings when the office workers have gone home.

Sadly the beer (Wadworths) is usually *dire*: very poorly kept and uncared-for ... after 2 years of having to take back pints, I have finally vowed to stick to the keg cider in future.

The New Inn, Melksham

Small pub in a residential area just South of Melksham. Usually fairly quiet. Very good well-kept beer (from the local Mole's brewery). Small garden with a couple of tables.

Parsons Nose, Melksham

Quite a 'sticky' pub, although the lounge bar has a few comfy leather settees. Very lively on Fri/Sat nights when there is usually live music (rock or karaoke) in the main bar. Separate pool room behind the bar. Beer is usually ok.

The Kings Arms Hotel, Melksham

Probably the "smartest" pub in Melksham, as befits its prestigious location overlooking the market square. Food so-so, and beer (Wadworths) usually ok, albeit amongst the most expsensive in the area (3.00 for a pint of 6X in Aug'08). However the bar is often very quiet and the disinterested staff have been known to close the pub early if there is little or no custom.

It can be pleasant to sit outside on warmer days, but this summer there are only have a couple of scruffy uncomfortable benches.

The Old Town Inn, St Mary's

With some trepidation, based on earlier beerintheevening reviews, we approached the Old Town on 12 Jun 2008. Rather nondescript from outside, but on entering our impressions are quite favourable: a bright, clean, woody interior. Three ales on the bar: Scilly Scuppered, Doom Bar and Sharps IPA. I chose the Doom Bar, whilst my friend's eyes fell gleefully on the Rattlesnake cloudy cyder. The ale was in fine condition and well-served. There were a few folk at the bar, a mixture of local lads and folk staying in the (smart new?) b+b rooms the pub has. There are hints of recent decoration, and possibily new ownership, We sit outside in the small, but tidy courtyard in front of the pub amongst the almost-tropical plants in the beds.

We're not massively hungry, but nevertheless I chose the "soup and roll" snacklet. Discussions at the bar upgraded this to the crab soup 'special', and it was very good indeed.

This is a super pub: 8/10, we agree, after settling in to a 3pt lunch!
