The Blue Boar, Colchester

Tried this on the opening day. The Broadside was acceptable, but too cold, but apparently the chiller has been addressed. It was tidy - seems some of the original Blue Boar locals are coming back quickly though. Good luck to the new landlord - let's hope the pub doesn't turn back in to 'Fight Club'.

The Hospital Arms, Colchester

The pub has one of the best selections of Ale's in Colchester, BUT a majority are Adnams and I couldn't find a dark or mild.

The staff were friendly, it was quite busy, but lacked a little character.

The Odd One Out, Colchester

This is a VERY traditional pub. Walking through the door is like stepping back in time 30 years.

Nice to see a pub where it's harder to find lager than it is to find ale.

National award winning cider pub, for those who like apples. You wouldn't take the wife there, but you'd certainly have a good pint.

The Bull, Colchester

The Bull was, for many years, known to the residents of Colchester as somewhere to steer clear of unless you spent your working day playing G.I. Joe over Fingringhoe Ranges. You can now drink here without the fear of having your head stamped on by a psychotic squady; and what a good drink it is too.

The Bull now have live music on certain nights (sometimes the have music in the front and also in the rear music room). I saw an open mic night recently and the local showcase of talent was actually very good.

The pub has been refit its clean, theres a good selection of drinks and I found 3 Real Ales on tap, all of which were kept very well and fairly priced at 2.65 a hit. There was also a good selection of snacks and the staff were very friendly.

Music is normally quite loud on a Friday and Saturday (which was fine by me) and local bands can be seen performing every week. If you want to meet up to a quiet chat, go in on a Monday or Tuesday.

I was dubious about visiting. Im not anymore. If you, like me, wanted another good Ale and music pub in town but normally steer clear of this place, give it another chance. I think youll be pleasantly surprised!
