The Rose and Crown PH, Oxford

Truly wonderful place. Splendid when I lived in Oxford (between 1995 and 2002), and still on top form on my last visit in summer 2008. Proper pub, and an excellent reason to live in Oxf!

The Salamander, Bath

Visited here in the hottest week of the year (July 2008). Air-conditioning was a blessed relief, and the beer was delicious and well priced. A real find.

The Glasshouse Stores, Piccadilly Circus

On a sodden saturday afternoon enjoyed a pleasant pair of pints here, with a nice crowd of regulars and the barman/maid. There didn't seem to be any bitter on pump so I had some "alpine lager" instead (the "man in the box" as it used to be) and it was most pleasing.

The Maypole, Cambridge

Great place, family owned/run. Famous for the jugs of cocktails. There is a little-known upstairs room too, and a large beer garden with a lovely view of, erm, a multi-storey car park.

Lawyers Wine and Oyster Bar, Cambridge

Far more a restaurant than a pub.

The Eagle, Cambridge

Beautiful pub; a tribute to the owners, Corpus Christi College, who ignored financial advice to turn it into offices, and instead refurbished it very well.

Always heaving with students and tourists. Beer reliable but not cheap. Staff are all young, and reliably rude when gettting rid of customers at - or rather before - drinking up time. So sadly a slightly corporate feel, as is probably inevitable with a large, famous, busy pub. But there is nothing else to touch it in the centre of Cambridge (possibly saying more about the centre of Cambridge than about the Eagle).

Eraina Taverna, Cambridge

Not a pub.

One of Cambridge's more eccentric restaurants, however, and worth a look for the long menu alone. I normally drink the retsina and have the Greek food options.
