The Whalebone, Fingringhoe

Visited for the first time at the weekend as we are househunting in the area. Sadly disappointed on several levels. First and foremost the attitude of the owners made us feel most unwelcome - a shame as the girl serving at the bar was enthusiastic and tried to be helpful.
We were overcharged for both our food and drinks - my girlfriend was charged more for a plate of vegetables and two yorkshire puddings than I was for sausage, black pudding and mash which is absurd. Upon questioning this we were told that vegetables are more expensive than meat!
It's a great shame as the pub is very attractive, is in a lovely spot and I would have liked to have made it my local. I find it astounding in this day and age, with pubs closing all over the place, that this attitude can prevail.

The Lexden Crown, Colchester

I've learned that it has been bought by the owner of The Lemon Tree restaurant and has been done up. If the job has been done properly the Crown (renamed The Lexden Crown) should do well as there is no competition in the area.

The Adelphi, Leeds

Visited this pub on a previous trip to Leeds on the strength of it's CAMRA NI status but I have to agree with some of the previous reviews in that this gem has not been properly looked after, feeling somewhat rundown.

The North Bar, Leeds

Interesting place with a fascinating range of beer. My only niggle is that all the draught beers were rocket fuel strength and not for lunchtime consumption.

The Midnight Bell, Leeds

Great pub with a lovely airy feel, excellent beer and good food. Very friendly and knowledgeable staff. Hard to fault.

Whitelocks, Leeds

Charming and very historic pub which I always visit when I go to Leeds. However I think I had the dullest pint of beer ever on my last vist. Not the pub's fault as it was in good condition but the Everards Flourish tasted of absolutely nothing. Why brew a beer so thoroughly insipid?

The Bricklayers, Colchester

My local and I enjoy going there very much. Friendly landlord and landlady, excellent range of beer from Adnams plus a couple of guests (though a mild would be a welcome additiion) and hearty food at lunchtimes.
The pub could do with a little bit of sprucing up especially ditching what remains of the carpet!

The Lexden Crown, Colchester

Went past at the weekend and saw that it was closed for redevelopment. Does anyone know what is going on?

The Crown, Stoke By Nayland

I concur. Excellent gastro pub with very good selection of local ales with Crouch Vale Brewers Gold being the house beer.
Lovely place for a quiet Sunday evening pint.

The Lion, Leavenheath

Until recently one of my locals. Very nice place to go for a family meal or a quiet drink late evening after the diners have departed. There is usually a guest ale but the Adnams was always very drinkable until a weird new dispensing system was installed which gave one of my favourite beers a ridiculous northern style head, completely spoiling it. Being primarily a food pub the manager although very clubbable wasn't really into beer.

The Shoulder of Mutton, Aldham

Dropped in one early Saturday evening. Didn't like it. I'm not a fan of Shepps' beer and the Spitfire (which I do quite like) wasn't on anyway. Nice old building in a lovely setting but the internal layout wasn't very warming so I'll be giving it a miss in future. Go over the bridge to the Queen's Head instead.

Ye Olde Marquis, Colchester

Popped in one day on my way into town. I think there must have been a very late session the night before as the staff seemed very vague albeit quite willing and helpful. It appeared damp and smelly too. Very disappointing beer - only GK IPA, so I won't be returning

The Fat Cat, Colchester

Having learned of it's existence I was excited by the prospect of a visit to The Fat Cat. Initial impressions were favourable with an excellent selection of beers on offer and friendly staff. However the place feels extremely new and lacks a community feel in my view. Strangely there were very few male patrons when I visited.

The Lexden Crown, Colchester

I recently tried The Crown noticing it was under new management. I was very encouraged by the large selection of local beers. However the ones I tried were served far too warm and instead of refreshing me they made me feel nauseous instead. A shame as there was nothing wrong with the quality of the beer itself.

The Bricklayers, Colchester

Having recently moved to Colchester I use the Bricklayers as my local. I havn't been often enough to really work out the lie of the land but as a CAMRA member I cannot fault the beer quality and choice. A good pint of Adnams is like an oasis in this GK dominated part of the country. The Landlady seems friendly enough although some of the casual bar staff are a bit wooden. It gets very busy at times.
