The Holyrood Tavern, Edinburgh

A sad, sad loss. Not the cleanest of pubs (by any stretch of the imagination) but the atmosphere was fantastic - like a busy students' union. Mark the landlord was an inspiration - whatever happened to him? A great loss!

Stavka, Glasgow

Excellent range of beers, particularly the superb Baltika no. 7 (not just the more widely available no 3)
Busy, student atmosphere - not a place for a quiet drink and a chat, but never dull. Definitely worth a visit just for the choice of beers alone.

The Nags Head, Walthamstow

An absolute gem! A very professional staff. A great selection of drinks, including Belgian fruit beers. Flossie and her husband have turned a complete dive into something that would not look out of place in Clapham or Hampstead. Very, very busy on weekend evenings and Sunday afternoons - but also with a large-ish garden.

The Bell, Walthamstow

The men's toilets are used more frequently by people doing drug deals than by people wishing to urinate. It is currently being 'done up' so there is some hope. It really couldn't be any worse.

The Victoria, Walthamstow

A real dive with a menacing clientele. The only good point is the exceptionally well run quiz on Sunday evenings

The Rose and Crown, Walthamstow

A rapidly improving pub, since the new managers took over a couple of months ago. Decor has significantly improved and the loud televisions removed. An upstairs theatre has only just opened (I haven't visited yet). Beer is well kept, real ale and lager - which wasn't always the case under the previous incumbents. The new owners also talk of having other plans for a variety of entertainments. All-in-all a very promising prospect that anyone who knew it in the bad old days should revisit.
