The Eagle, Hoxton

How come this pub is in the Good Beer Guide and the Wenlock has been quietly dropped? Makes one wonder what CAMRA are thinking of. I wouldn't bother dropping in here on the Wenlock/Old Fountain run. The bar staff are snotty and hopeless and the beer choice boring, not kept properly or simply not there.

The Old Fountain, Old Street

A great boozer that's come on a treat in the last few years. Always a good choice of beer and a proper cider.

The Wenlock Arms, Hoxton

Great beers, brilliant choice. Hats off to the cellar man - never had a bad drink here. Nice customers too - very friendly.Tuesday is the day to go for the old codgers club when the beer tickers meet up and the cellar runs are on. The salt beef doorstep sandwiches are enormous and wonderful.

The New Rose, Islington

Handy to have a pub with real ale in this area of Essex Road even if the beer is expensive. It's well kept and a reasonable choice even if the same beer choice seem to be on for months on end.

CASK Pub and Kitchen, Pimlico

Not a bad pub and better than the Pimlico Tram that's for sure. A bit steep on pricing but nice to see a reasonable choice of beers in this area. If there were a few more decent pubs in the vicinity would frequent more but it's a bit of a trek for me just for the one decent boozer.

The Greyhound, Corfe Castle

Nice looking pub in a lovely setting with decent beer, stroppy staff & expensive food. I was going to eat there but when I saw the tiny portions for 9+ at lunch time I went to the shop and got a snack instead. Do pub companies think that if they have pubs in a tourist area they don't need to try too hard? They must put their most incompetent managers in them as they think people will go there anyway. Sloppy.

The Falcon, Clapham Junction

I called in on the way to Battersea beer festival earlier in the week. The beer was in sparkling condition and the pub itself is a beauty. There were 10 real ales on tap - I don't know if that is the norm or if it was especially for the beer festival overspill. Wonderful anyway, I wish I'd had more time to linger.

The Wenlock Arms, Hoxton

Fantastic pub with great beer but often ruined by the locals throwing their weight around. Some, not all, seem to take offence that anyone outside their circle can come in and invade their territory. I left early to go somewhere less confrontational but will be back again, hopefully when they are out making someone else's life a misery.

The Rosemary Branch, Islington

The staff seem more interested in making this place their own private club. Cliquey and uncomfortable - makes you feel like you've invaded someone's house. Pricey for the area off the beaten path but the beer was ok if not worth the hassle. And patorg1, didn't your mum tell you self praise is no recommendation?

The Claret Free House, Addiscombe

Nipped in here yesterday on a bit of a tour round the area. It's a nice enough pub but I nearly walked past as I thought it was an Indian restaurant! I would like to go back in the evening to see if they put any more beer on as the choice wasn't brilliant. The beer I had was a bit warm and veering towards sour. Just on the turn but the bar was very quiet and I suppose if there's not a high turnover that's what happens. I guess having frequented the Wenlock for the past few weeks you get spoilt with the high turnover of beers.

The Wenlock Arms, Hoxton

Dropped in last night for a delicious doorstep sandwich made with crusty hand cut bread. Wish all pubs would make the same effort and provide cheap and filling snacks. The beer was top notch. Think the turnover here is so fast it's always in good condition.

The Square and Compass, Worth Matravers

Poor Stonch, but what did you think of it slerpy? Any personal view? Several people said, visiting this pub was a must. I nearly didn't go because of the foul weather but was glad I did. Flagstone floors, dark stone and so atmospheric. The beer was decent too. Well worth the trip.

The Albion, Barnsbury

Used to love this place - a country pub in the city, and a nice outside area for Summer sun - but last time I looked in it was all Greene King. The staff looked at me like I was something they'd found on bottom of their shoe. I turned on my heel and scooted out. Why is it we read that pubs are desperate for punters and yet they do everything possible to drive you away? I don't want fawning over, just a pleasant atmos. Too much to ask for?

The Baby Betjeman, Kings Cross

Would be great in Summer but I was frozen and the poor barstaff looked in distress. Must have been the wind whistling in over the nearby gate acting like a funnel. Still, had to try a Pride on gravity while waiting for a train. Looking forward to the old 'Shires' bar refurb soon - re-opening as the Betjeman this year.

Lord Clyde, Canonbury

Not been in this pub before despite living in the area. Dark, woody and cosy. Definately a place to hunker down in Winter. Didn't have food but the menu looked ok. Enthusiastic barman/landlord seemed keen on beer so hopefully real ale will be a feature.

The Scolt Head, Islington

Early doors when I visited so can't comment on the pub goers but liked the pub. The beers were good, the pub was nice and roomy, the barstaff very friendly. They were setting up for evening meals when I went in - the menu looked good. Will go back and try the food soon.

The Wenlock Arms, Hoxton

Great beer but didn't like the aggressive professional cockney who insisted on lighting up in the bar on his way outside and always came back in with a lungful of smoke to realease in the bar. A regular thing according to the bloke I was talking to.Nice vibe apart from that. Good beer, pleasant people, could have done without the smoker making his protest though.
