The Stag, Victoria

CLOSING END MAY 2012 :-(

The Ocean Deck, Sandown

Came here for lunch with 5 work colleagues on a rainy October day. We were only in the IOW for a day and needed somewhere to eat, drink and sit and chat about our upcoming projects for a few hours.

The weather may have been crap and the pub may have been empty, but the welcome was fantastic. The manager and the barmaid were helpfulness itself. The beer was reasonably priced, the food was wonderful, fresh and prepared beautifully and the toilets were immaculate.

If the weather had played along the location would have been stunning, as it directly overlooks the beach.

Thoroughly recommended.

The Woodman, Highgate

Went to this pub with 8 colleagues for a lunch meeting on a Wednesday. It was nice and quiet with a welcoming open fire. The bar service was excellent - very friendly barman (Dan?)and the food was fantastic. Great selection of starters, mains and desserts all sensibly priced and freshly made. I chose seared Crocodile tail salad to start as I had never tried Crocodile and never seen it on a menu - delicious! The chef (Xavier) came out 2 or 3 times to help the server bring the food and to check that everything was in order - which it was.

We spent about 4.5 hours in the pub and couldn't find anything to fault it. Perhaps when the barman isn't on duty they have someone working who isn't as good, hence the previous review, because nothing was too much trouble for the guys who served us.

The Ballot Box, Greenford

Went there with a few friends from work while we were in the area the other lunchtime. Of the 11 customers in the pub(including us), 7 were kids and most of them were under 5's. There's an 'adventure' playground in the back yard and high chairs in the bar.Is this a pub or a creche, as we certainly felt out of place not having any sprogs in tow...

The other reviewers have hit the nail on the head - it is pretty amazing how a bar run so pitifully badly can keep staggering on!

Last night, at a mates leaving do, we went to the bar 5 times and returned with alternative drinks as each time there was something unavailable. This just highlighted how poorly the bar was run....
1) No Kronenbourg Blanc
2) No cream, so all the cocktails with cream were unavailable
3) No melon liquer - so from their list of 3 cocktail 'special offers' only two were available
4) No mint leaves, so no Mojitos
5) The house red special was not the one they were advertising in the wine list

Moving onto the staff - 'bored disinterest' and joke amongst themselves they were much more animated. At one point after they had taken my order they decided to do shots together, leaving us waiting and watching. Not once did any of them say please or thank you when asking for money or returning change.

There are so many places nearby which are better run and better stocked - go there and avoid this dump.

The Bavarian Beerhouse, Shoreditch

Went to a birthday do here on Friday 15 September '06. We'd booked an area for 50, so got the entire back room - and ONE waitress. The room was dark, some of the lights didn't work, they managed to find a standard lamp, but it wasn't ideal. Not a promising start and hardly the best way for them to get the contents of our wallets into their till.

The waitress insisted on taking the bookers credit card and kept ignoring our requests that she take payment from people as she served their rounds. Nice for my mate to have to be worried all night they are gonna end up footing the bill for all those who have forgotten to pay up.

Guests started complaining and leaving after waiting 30 mins to be served or waiting 45 mins after ordering to get their drinks and food. Another waitress was drafted in but couldn't remember who ordered what, and seemed to think people should be more patient (?) 30 mins waiting for service was apparently not unnacceptable. All in all it was a total shambles.

Wrong orders were being brought over - at one point more incorrect food orders were being brought out and then returned to the kitchen than were actually being eaten. When my food arrived it was obvious it had been sitting under the warming lamp on the servery for quite some time as the sauce had developed a skin. MMM Yum!

Previous posters are right - woefully inadequate toilets for somewhere that sells beer by the litre. Some of the women noticed that one of the women's toilets had been converted into a mens room by covering the sign over with a paper one. A quip rip later and the females had 50% more toilet facilities, so queues were down to only 5 minutes!

The staff are disorganised at best and the food is ok, while overpriced. For a nation known on its efficiency, this is a terrible advert for Germany. A table numbering system might help, or giving people trying the '3 beer experience' a token to use when claiming their next beer, so that at least the staff can work out who ordered what.

As a concept this place has a lot of promise, and I read others' reviews here prior to going. The reality was a real disappointment and I would never go again in a big group, but maybe give it a second shot with 4 or 5 friends who I could easily split the tab with at the end, so the disorganisation wasn't a problem.

The Ranelagh, Bounds Green

Great new beer garden. A cool place to spend a lazy summer Sunday afternoon maybe. Covered area outside so you can enjoy the outside even if it isn't the best weather.

Excellent food and good service. Friendly bar staff - a great improvement on what this place used to be. Hope it succeeds as there's nothing like this in the area.
