The Castlebar, West Ealing

Probably the best bar in Ealing. Great food, friendly staff (although they seem to change every few months), waiter service, and brilliant year-round beer garden (with a massive canopy and loads of heaters - ideal for winter). OK, it's not especially cheap, but I don't think it's particularly expensive either.

Plus, it's open later than the majority of Ealing bars/pubs.

The Townhouse, Ealing

Strange really - a nice place to relax/watch sport during the day (comfy seats, pool tables, extremely friendly barmaids, etc), but at night it seems like a completely different pub.

I think the current manager/owners are doing their best to shake off the unwanted reputation for drunkenness/unsavoury characters, and although they've made progress, it might take a while longer before they can claim it's changed completely.

The Priory, Ealing

If the airport-style metal detectors and security search as you enter don't act as a clue as to the nature of this late night bar/club then you're an idiot.

That said, I've ended up here numerous times at the end of drunken nights out and, in all honesty, I've generally enjoyed myself, so what does that say about me?!

NB; Maybe this indicates that if you are going to come here then, for God's sake, make sure you're not sober (or maybe it indicates how few decent late-license places Ealing has).

The Spinning Wheel, Northfields

Definitely one of the best places to watch live sport in Ealing.

Also, if you can see beyond the slightly rough and ready exterior, it's a fantastic place for a fun-filled, good-humoured, cheap night out on a Friday/Saturday. If you're sick of the unwarranted pretentiousness at some of Ealing Broadway's establishments, you're prepared to have a laugh (and you can't be ar**d with the nightbus home!), you could do a lot worse.

Live music, cheap drinks, late license and a tiny Chinese guy dancing around with a pint of Guinness in his hand - what more could you want?!
