The Red Lion, Upper Basildon

Popped in to check this pub out today but won't be going again. A joyless experience. Even though the pub was nearly empty , it took nearly half an hour for the kitchen to rustle up an overpriced sandwich which was nothing special when it finally arrived. This entire time was spent listening to a horrible woman dominating the bar by bellowing drunkenly into her mobile phone about how "you should have ****in' glassed them" and "f this" "f that" etc etc etc while her partner glared at anyone who dared to look over. Clearly the staff didn't think there was anything wrong with this. An affluent area, but it seems money can't buy you class. Avoid at all costs.

Other reviewers are perfectly correct. Bar and restaurant now beautifully refurbished. Excellent beers in the bar, food and wine in the restaurant are superb. But the service! Painstakingly slow, while at the same time the woman serving us tonight didn't half look down her nose at us!

The bar here is still a nice place to hang out... decent beer, good service and of course the bar billiards table which is great fun. But don't waste your money eating here. The food is extremely overpriced and average quality at best - and last time I ate here we were served not one but *two* bottles of red wine that were both clearly off. (Very bad smell from the neck of the bottle, a nasty taste, and the cloudiness/fizziness that indicates a wine has undergone some secondary fermentation.) Avoid.

The turnaround in the quality of this pub in the last year or so has been nothing short of miraculous. It used to be a right waste of space. Well done to all the friendly hard-working staff who have made it such a great place. The beers are great, the pizzas fabulous (admittedly the burgers are a bit less inspiring) and there is a nice beer garden for the summer and a huge open fire for winter. What more do you want from a pub ?
