Thomas Mildmay, Chelmsford

Not a bad little bar, though i get the impression it would like to be a club. Staff are friendly, beers good, if a very narrow selection, and let this be a warning to anyone, if you stock something, in this case Westons Old Rosie cider, then make sure that when someone wants something you actually have it prepared properly instead of it being cloudy and unserveable!

Edwards, Chelmsford

Went here last night, not bad, but not brilliant, only had one and decided to leave, only got lager on tap from what i saw, and even that tasted similar to dishwater, but not bad for women.

The New Inn, Gloucester

One of my local haunts for whenever i venture into gloucester. Barstaff are always polite and friendly, even when they're packed to the rafters and rushed off their feet. When in on a saturday night, the top end is for those of you who want to have a dance and want to be in a club, but without the kids, and the bottom end is reserved for tranquility and calm that everyone needs once in a while. There's always at least 3 ales on the go, with i think hobgoblin being the standard and others guesting, cider's also available and usually well recieved with the other usual suspects thrown in for good measure.

Glad to see that not everywhere with a good selection in gloucester has shut yet.

Pitcher & Piano, Nottingham

Been to the pitcher and piano a couple of times, and i adore the place. Both visits have gone on for far longer than they should have done, and you'll be glad to hear that the management don't stand for any nonense as i almost got thrown out on a saturday night as we were being to loud, which we were.

Fantastic conversion from an old church into a drinking establishment, cocktails are lethal and delicious, can't comment on the beer unfortunately, can't remember, but the atmosphere was terrific, the staff friendly, even the guy trying to throw us out and loads of room, though the toilets on the very top of the second floor can sometimes be an issue.

The Porterhouse, Covent Garden

Following a recent expedition to london from the west country to meet old friends, i'd been given directions to the porterhouse, after going down the back streets of covent garden from the tube my friend and i were concerned that the venue of choice for our reunion of 15/16 blokes had been what looked like an overpriced, pretencious trendy type wine bar, but we had faith and went in.

Upon entering i was amazed, and thought i'd been transported to the titanic with the steel pipes and wood everywhere, a joy to behold.

The beers that were on offer were very tasty, there was definitley something for everyone and it wasn't too expensive either which was re-assuring. A good watering hole for a catchup, though i can imagine it wouldn't be as good later in the evening when it gets overcrowded, despite there being at least 3 floors that i found and a small mezzanine part as well.

Bar staff were friendly and didn't mind a laugh us having a laugh with them, wide range of consumers so no specific genre and a good atmosphere in general.

Next time we have a catchup i'll be proposing the same venue again and i'm sure i'll be seconded by many others.
