The Marble Hill, St Margarets

Passed by yesterday - now open under new management. Has the threat from Sainsbury's receeded?

The Castle, Holborn

Has the potential for greatness, but I keep getting a bad pint in here. Always changed without fuss, but if you're going to be a beer pub you need to take care of your product.

The Blacksmiths Arms, Newport

Superb. Excellent food and beer, atmospheric public bar. Restaurant to the rear with spectacular Solent views. Friendly staff managed to seat an unbooked group of 15(!) on August Bank Holiday Sunday, for Sunday lunch.

The Three Bishops, Brighstone

A bit souless and no local ales on offer. Felt more like a psuedo-gastropub in Wandsworth than an Isle of Wight Country Inn.

Still, at least it's open.

Kenbridge Hotel, Castle Douglas

Idyllic spot on the banks of the River Ken, with excellent little west-facing beer garden terracing down onto the river banks. The pub has a spot-on campsite attached.

Two handpumps on: I would have given a "8" rather than "7" if a local brew had been on offer rather than just Deuchars and Speckled Hen. The pub is probably more hotel-cum-restaurant than bar.

The Fox, Twickenham

Another smashing night in the Fox last night. Tried the food for the first time and was very pleasantly suprised with both the quality and value; far better than the Barmy or the White Swan and a good few pounds cheaper.

Both the Pride and the Naked Ladies were in good shape and there were three other ales on plus a cider. The Fox is the standout best pub in Twickenham, a good mixed crowd, atmospheric interior, and decent beer.

Chequers Inn, Lymington

Was there on Saturday. Massive amount of kids in the garden. No kids inside. Everyone's a winner!

Good quality Ringwood ales and a nice pub.

The Botanist On The Green, Kew

This place has managed to pull off the quirky modern look with relative success visiting on a sunny afternoon, it felt very pleasant. Light coloured walls and interesting dcor.

They need to give the staff more training though I was kept waiting at the bar while the barmaid went round setting up menus on the tables, and when I was served she did so by standing at the till on the other side of the bar. This meant she misheard my order and we only got one burger meal instead of two! On the way out, I went to settle my tab and the PIN machine would not read my card. Rather than try again, she stonily said card not working (she was Eastern European, I think) and handed it back. I simply wiped the chip and lo and behold it worked again!

No point in putting foxy-looking staff behind the bar when theyve clearly been given no training, and end up appearing rude!

The ale choice was limited to one, and the food was OK.

The Rifleman, Twickenham

Excellent no-nonsense boozer. The young landlord is a nice bloke, had time for a chat and told us about his plans for the pub (nothing too drastic, don't worry!)

The Three Kings, Twickenham

Is this pub re-opening? Lots of scaffolding up at the moment, and stuff going on inside.

The Helwith Bridge, Helwith Bridge

Very friendly, slightly ramshackle boozer. Hilarious landlady! 7 real ales on tap, railway memorabilia on the walls - and dodgy disco room to one side with octogenarian DJ - memorable for uttering the line "Sorry lads, this CD's skipping, I'll ust pop it in the dishwasher". Genius!
