The White Eagle Pub, Anglesea

Very modern pub, tastefully decorated and with stunning views. A few cask ales, regularly the wonderful Weetwood Eastgate Ale. The food is very good, too.

Eagle and Child Inn, Staveley

A great pub, tucked away from the bypass, but definately worth a stop. Four real ales on tap, good food and an atmosphere that's quite unique, especially when candlelit, as it is after dark. If you're heading into the Lake District, give yourself a treat and come off the Staveley bypass for this one!

The Watermill Inn, Ings

I'm a regular visitor to this superb pub. Can't imagine how anyone could think it over-rated - what exactly do you want? The range of beers is fantastic, I have very rarely (though not never, I admit) had a bad pint here. The food is straightforward (a sauce is called a sauce and not a 'jus') and well cooked. Friendly staff and a cheerful atmosphere add to the experience. And there is no telly and no piped music - both big pluses in my book. Excellent. RIP Alan.

The Drunken Duck Inn, Barngates

The DD used to be my favourite pub. Fabulous location, excellent real ales (especially the Theakston's Old Peculier, which was always superb) and straight forward food. Excellent. That was years ago. It's not really a pub any more, just a restaurant where artistically laid out poncy meals replaced the real food (and came with a fair old price hike). The Old Peculier was sent packing and their own brand microbrewery ales were on all the pumps. Some of the Barngates beers are not bad, but they're a very long way from OP. The comfy bar was 'redesigned' to look trendy, and in so doing lost all its character. Drinkers were banned from anywhere but the bar itself. I now check it out every three years to look for improvement. I'm due back in 2011.
