The Black Horse, Ireland

Very expensive and over rated food (IMHO) - Sunday lunch with a couple of drinks came to circa £50 EACH when we got the bill and averaged it out (we had 3 courses and coffee) and the quality was mediocre to say best (all our party agreed)....atmosphere was stiflingly hot and stuffy and very noisy...only the puds were any good. Service was ok, but snotty maître d'. Not a place I would go to for a nice quiet drink at all...shame as the setting is lovely. Not recommended as a pub or a restaurant (there are many better places in the area to eat and/or drink IMHO).

The Cock, Broom

Hurrah!! I am happy to report that the pub is now in private ownership and is being run as a FREEHOUSE with a good and regularly changing selection of ales served straight from the barrel in the cellar (no bar). Visited on Saturday and the selection was : GK IPA, London Pride, Old Hooky....with Doombar coming on line this coming week (I was told). I am also informed that the new owner wants to keep everything as is (apart from freshening up the paintwork and the WCs). Food is excellent traditional fayre and popular....I had steak & kidney suet pudding and it was fabulous; my partner had ham/egg/chips and that was also excellent....all washed down with a great drop of Old Hooky. So pleased that it's 'business as usual' at the Cock after the recent 'for sale' scare....and that it seems to still be very popular with locals and those who travel especially to go there....so nice to see a pub pleasantly busy (but not over busy) and v welcoming to all. The new managers - Nick and Michelle - are great too and work v hard. Good luck to the new owner - please continue to keep things as they are!!
