The Volunteer Inn, Hereford

Used to have an Adnams beer and 2 or 3 others, often unusual and interesting, but recently the Adnams has gone and the beer choice is a whole lot less imaginative. Beer is quite expensive but the food is cheap plentiful and wholesome. The Wednesday night serve-yourself curry and a pint is an amazingly good deal. Small backyard is pleasant in summer and there's an open fire indoors in winter. Friendly atmosphere.

Beer in Hand, Hereford

Large range of very well kept beers and ciders. It's been converted from a launderette and still has a slightly stark feel to it, but the bar staff are great and very knowledgeable about their beers. A few beers from local micros seem to be permanent but the rest rotate so it's always worth popping in to see what they've got. No food available but you can bring your own from the nearby takeaways.

Kilcot Inn, Newent

Good beer, a very warm welcome and excellent home-cooked food at reasonable prices - what more could you want? Service was attentive without being intrusive. Dropped in on the off-chance knowing nothing about the pub and discovered a real gem. Will be back soon!

The Trumpet Inn, Ledbury

What a disappointment! Have had some lovely meals here in the past but today's was definitely sub-Wetherspoons, at twice the price. The menu looks like a pubco chain menu. Beer is well kept, but it's a Wadworth's tied house so choice is limited. Won't be going back until I hear it's changed hands again.

The Loughpool Inn, Sellack

The pub itself is lovely - very cosy and atmospheric. We popped in for a pint on a quiet lunchtime and found the staff very friendly. However we did find that although the beer was well-kept, the main emphasis of the pub is food. We went away feeling that just having a drink without a meal wasn't quite the "done thing".

The Boat Inn, Penallt

When I first found this pub on a walking holiday in the Wye Valley in 1983 I thought I'd gone to heaven. More recently it went sadly downhill. I'm interested to hear it's changed hands - I think it might be time for another visit.

The Castle Inn, Little Birch

Friendly local with well kept real ales. Usually Otter Bitter and 3 others. Haven't tried the food myself but friends have recommended it.

The Turf Locks Hotel, Exminster

Lovely pub in wonderful location. Only accessible on foot or by bicycle, although I believe you can catch a boat down the canal from Exeter in the summer.
