The Glue Pot, Swindon

A cracking little pub. I'm new to Swindon and went to this pub on the recommendation of a mate at work. Barman, landlord and landlady all very friendly. On my 3 or 4 visits so far I've tried a range of the ales and without exception they were excellent. The quiz night on a Thursday well worth a visit.

The Odd One Out, Colchester

My favourite pub in the town but I can see why it isn't to everyone's taste. Top landlord, best beer in the town, interesting and friendly clientele. It is a bit shabby and feels dated but in a good way. On the downside, I'm not precious about these things but the gents really needs improving. As has been said before, not for party animals but I disagree with the poster who said don't take your wife - fair enough if your wife/girlfriend prefers wine or cocktails but if, like mine, she enjoys good beer or cider then why not.

The Hospital Arms, Colchester

The only pub in Colchester I'd give a 10. Beer is always excellent particularly the Timothy Taylor Landlord which seems to be a permanent guest ale. Staff are hard working and friendly. Out the back is a nice place to while away a leisurely afternoon in the sun. Decent if unspectacular food. Does get very busy early evening Friday and Saturday - often impossible to get a seat after 7pm but often quietens down and clientele head into town. A country pub in the town. It would be good to see a regular guest mild or porter on. Only slight complaint would be that it is a bit pricey.

The Hole in the Wall, Colchester

This could be great pub but can't quite seem to know what it wants to be. The owners/landlord could do worse than look at how the Hospital Arms (which is doing great business despite the credit crunch) is run. I've had evenings where the the staff have been friendly and a good selection of beers on and others where .... Agree with previous poster about the music which although I like most of what is played (Westlife apart), is a bit obtrusive.

The Fox and Fiddler, Colchester

Nice pub with quality ales. Friendly and knowledgeable landlord. Staff friendly and efficient. Clientel sometimes lets it down.

The Fat Cat, Colchester

Excellent pub with great selection of (usually) well kept ales. Staff friendly and service pretty good. Although friends have reported that it can be difficult getting served unless you are a regular, I've never experienced this myself. Although the pub is nicely done out and clean, it is small so getting a seat can be problem. Good atmosphere on match days.

The Bricklayers, Colchester

One of the best pubs in Colchester for real ales. Good range of Adnams ales plus a couple of guest beers. Service usually excellent. Contrary to one of the previous reviews, I have been in the pub with a mate who returned a pint (first one out of the barrel) as it tasted a bit vinegary - the landlord replaced without a murmur and said thanks for letting him know! Although used by Col Utd fans it isn't a football pub. Most evenings it's a mix of locals, beer fans, studenty types and commuters being a 3 minute walk from the main rail station. Recommended.
